About this property
Holly’s Cottage in the Woods is meant for people who love to unplug.
Holly’s Cottage in the Woods is meant for people that love the outdoors, love swimming in natural water and want to unplug. It's a unique 40 acre property in the Sierra foothills Yuba River area, with a Tudor style cottage built by a British shipwright from wood milled on the property. This completely off-the-grid house is a mix of wood, stone walls and shiplap giving it a truly unique character, like cottages in the English countryside. There's plenty of room for multiple tents plus an outbuilding. The final 3 miles to the house are on a gravel road.
The house sleeps six comfortably. There's a very large bedroom with a California king bed that sleeps two adults and room for a little one if needed. Plus a single reclining daybed that sleeps one more. There's another bedroom (open walls) that you pass through to get to the main bedroom, with a double bed that sleeps two. We have a futon couch that sleeps two in the living room, a dining room table that seats five, kitchen, full bath, washer/dryer.
There's a fully stocked kitchen with a gas stove and small fridge running on propane. The kitchen is stocked with all essential cooking herbs, oils and spices. There's a culinary herb garden right out front, just below the kitchen window. The house is stocked with dishes, pots, pans and bakeware necessary to cook amazing meals. Just bring the food! The closest store is Mother Truckers.
Swimming; If you are familiar with the Yuba River then you're likely familiar with the epic lazy days around the many swimming holes. We have a few floaties you can take down to the river but please bring them back with you.
Hiking; There are multiple trails that lead out to BLM land just steps from the house as well as endless other places to hike all around the area in tall restored forest.
Cooking & camp; Chilling outside. Once fire season passes, we have a large fire pit adjacent to the house which rests in front of another structure that can be used to prep food for cooking on the open fire outside, or on the BBQ . If you're coming with a large party the structure can also be used for camping.
Lazing; We have a couple hammocks. Both are strung near the firepit. It's a perfect spot to curl-up with a book or chill-out looking up at the stars while dinner is being cooked.
Utilities; The house is fully solar powered and heated by wood burning stove in the winter months. No air conditioning. There's a ceiling fan. A generator is used to pump the well when the water tank needs refilling (would not be necessary for a weekend stay). A full water tank allows for about a week of running water when the house is in full use (4 or more people) for showers, laundry, dishes etc.
Gardening; We have a large fenced-in garden with multiple raised garden beds, feel free to harvest what is there to cook with and if you see yourself as a return guest, grab a garden bed to plant if you desire; get your hands dirty and return for another getaway to reap the benefits of your labor.
AT&T cell coverage works well but other carriers do not as well. There's a cell signal booster. We use our phone's hot spot to get computers online for email and downloading movies, find where your next hiking trail might be or the swimming hole, what restaurant to try in town but this house is for those seeking a homemade relaxed experience.
We also have a visitor book with some of our favorite things to do in the area
