About this property
Hunter House - Famous Fay Jones home in Memphis!
Summary:
Hunter House is a 4300 sq ft, four-bedroom, three-bath, organic mid-century home with floor to ceiling windows and 1.27 acres that offer multiple levels of water features, patio entertainment, and serenity in the heart of Memphis!
The Space:
Designed by native Arkansas architect, E. Fay Jones, whom the American Institute of Architects stated is "one of the 10 most influential architects of the 20th century”, Hunter House is accompanied by Jones’ other works including the famous Thorncrown Chapel in Eureka Springs, Stoneflower Cottage in Hot Springs, and the Mildred B. Cooper Memorial Chapel in Bella Vista.
E. Fay Jones, was a close friend and mentee of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, sharing a modern naturalist design of bringing the outdoors in, through glass, natural elements and intricate designs. His works are considered a collection of modern art that enthusiasts and admirers of design treasure with historical preservation.
Upon entry be welcomed by the open main level including living room with soaring rock fireplace, sitting area, dining room with seating for 8 and fully remodeled kitchen. The kitchen has top of the line stainless steel appliances, quartzite countertops, cabinet concealed dishwasher, french door refrigerator with water and ice, as well as a new stove top range and vent. The kitchen is stocked with bakeware, cookware, and serving ware for any of your culinary needs. Beyond the kitchen is a full laundry and half-bath for convenience.
Your vacation destination to the Blues capital of the South is underscored by the relaxing ambiance of waking up in one of 4 light-filled bedrooms. There are 3 twin rooms with built in desk, cabinetry, and 32” smart TVs, and sliding glass doors to the full length walk out deck with views of the sculpted gardens below. The hallway bath with shower/tub combo is accessible to one twin room, while the other two share a Jack-and-Jill full tub/shower bathroom. The king master bedroom suite has a large walk-in closet, double vanity with bowl sink, and standing shower. Entertainment is at your fingertips in the master suite with a 55” smart TV and it also offers it’s own outdoor retreat with seating in addition to the walk-out deck. The adjacent book-filled office has 2 twin daybeds for additional seating and a water fountain feature in view from the sliding glass door.
The lowest level of the home has an additional queen bedroom with built in cabinetry including a mini-fridge, 55” TV, and patio access. All mattresses in the house are cool top deep-pocket mattresses for the best night’s sleep. Across from the queen bedroom is a sliding wood door to a recently added media room cork flooring, 75” smart TV, oversized couch with chaise lounge, board game storage, and Xbox gaming system.
The resilience of the construction of Hunter House is partially due to the use of heartwood tidewater cypress, a favorite of Frank Lloyd Wright’s due to its warm red tone and natural resistance to water. (Even the shower walls are paneled by this resistant wood surround.) The house is equipped to accommodate 9 people (see bedroom list above) and also includes 300 wood cabinets, custom light fixtures, and furniture built on site. The floor is laid with flagstone carefully pieced in puzzle-like fashion with very little mortar necessary.
the landscaping includes a running creek, rear pond, as well as a rocky wet and dry creek on site.
As your travels bring you just east of the great Mississippi River, we hope you will choose Hunter House as your relaxing, historic retreat!
