About this property
Mahnomen Cottage: Hike, Bike, Fish, & Relax only 2 hrs north of the Twin Cities!
Enjoy time away at our peaceful cottage on 30 acres, just 15 min E of Brainerd & 5 minutes W of Bay Lake & Garrison close to Rutgers Resort. The property is adjacent to a shallow non-recreational lake with a special easement for harvesting wild rice. Local activities include all-season mountain biking at Cuyuna near Crosby (20 min), exploring the lakes, hiking, fishing, hunting (on our land which has its own deer stand(!), snowmobiling (we're right on a major trail), snowshoeing, etc. Families and pets welcome! We are also located 1/2 hour from the Brainerd International Raceway.
We are nestled on many acres of beautiful land adjacent to Rice Lake, which has a wildlife protection easement for the farming of wild rice (hence the name Mahnomen, which means "wild rice" in Ojibwe). Our property offers the opportunity to just wander and "get lost", hike, fish, bike, hunt, cozy up by the fire, snowmobile or snowshoe, and enjoy dozens of lakes just minutes away (our favorites are Bay Lake which is 5 min away, or Nokay Lake which has much less traffic - both have public access). The property is also adjacent to a protected Wildlife Management Area - the Hesitation WMA - which allows for public hunting. Or you can simply take a stroll in the WMA - it is beautiful land. We have many outbuildings for storing bikes, boats, snowmobiles or other equipment (included a heated garage), and a deer stand for hunting. We are very encouraging of mountain bike enthusiasts coming to visit Cuyuna, and will offer a place to store and work on mountain bikes or boats. Score!
Please allow yourselves time to take in the scenery and peacefulness of the property, and to enjoy the sunsets from the large deck in front. Popular spots nearby include: Cuyuna trail system and the town of Crosby (20 min), Paul Bunyan Land (6 min), Brainerd lakes area (15 min), Bay Lake (5 min), Aitkin (10 min) and many other cute towns and areas to explore.
Things to know about the Cottage:
Since we are in a rural area, we are hooked up to well water and a septic system. Therefore, no feminine hygiene items or other such implements can be flushed down the toilet and should be placed in a wastebasket, which is located under the sinks in the bathrooms.
Internet is available and can be used as often as needed as we are hooked up to a fiberoptic network. Please log in to Netflix, Hulu or any other streaming services using your own accounts, and be sure to log out of your streaming accounts before you check out of the cottage.
The gas fireplace can be turned on using the thermostat to the right of the bathroom door in the kitchen - please turn up no higher than 75 degrees, and then to turn it off, turn it back to 55. The thermostat that controls the propane heat for the house is located in the utility room on the wall to the right of the entrance, but you shouldn't need to use it unless the baseboard heaters fail. Be sure the fireplace is turned back down to 55 before you leave.
The 2-person jacuzzi (hot tub!) in the main bathroom is the perfect solution for cold bodies and sore muscles, and the jets are very powerful. Be sure not to fill the tub up too high and aim the jets downward, otherwise it may overflow and complicate the jets.
The wildlife in the area is ABUNDANT. In addition to your typical insects (bring bug spray in the summer and fall!), you will see oodles of birds, rodents, deer, coyotes and even the occasional moose or bear. Wildflowers are plentiful in the warmer months, and the winter scenery is equally stunning.
CHECK OUT DETAILS:
*Strip beds and put used bedding on top of beds, along with towels and any other linens that were used *Make sure you are logged out of streaming services on TVs *Wash your dishes in dishwasher and put them away *Take home (or throw away) any excess food *Take trash out to green bin located in front of garage (or at curb at end of driveway if there) *Make sure fireplace thermostat is turned back down to 55 *Make sure all windows are closed (if you happened to open any) *Turn down heat to base level of 55 (during cold weather) *Turn off A/C unit (during warmer weather) *Close door completely behind you when you leave

It was a nice property, close to fun things to do in both Brainerd/Baxter and Crosby/Ironton. We really enjoyed the cabin and the outdoor area during our short stay.
The cabin was incredibly peaceful. For the price, it was an extremely excellent place to stay. The owners were very responsive to my questions and very helpful guiding me through the check in and check out process.
Enjoyed the nice peaceful country air. Pretty sunsets.Activities were accessible from cottage. The house had everything we needed, wifi, etcHad a good family gathering.

Great host! Very good at communicating. Loved the property
This was my second stay here. I so appreciate being able to bring my dog. This house has everything I need to relax and is located for convenient access to all that the area has to offer.
Our stay was just what we needed for our family reunion weekend in Garrison! The property had a beautiful country setting with lots of room for our dog ti explore and run. The house itself had all we needed and was very cutely decorated in authentic retro styling. Thank you for a great weekend getaway!!
We had such a lovely stay here. We brought the dog and he had so much fun running around the property off leash. The wifi worked great, one of us had to work remotely. The interior was so cutely designed and we loved the jacuzzi. Would stay again!

Thank you Beth - you were amazing guests and we’d have you back in a heartbeat! I hope the doggie had fun too!
Plenty of room for everyon, beds were comfy and housecat clean. Mosquitoes were a bit much but at no fault to the owners or property manager, just a wet and bad year for them everywhere.
The host has put so much thought and care into the details here, from comfortable furniture and tables/lights where you want them to the cool art on the walls to the carefully curated array of vintage knick knacks that are so much fun. Super clean and well-equipped. Would stay here again.
This place is so cute and in a great spot. 2hrs from Minneapolis, close to Garrison amenities. But you also can't hear neighbors, so you feel secluded. We had a great time relaxing and had no issues - everything worked as promised and had all the stuff we needed.
Very cute home that is tastefully decorated. Home worked well for my week’s stay with my family and dogs. The home is off a busy highway, but is far enough off the road to where I did not worry about my dogs and couldn’t hear any road noise once inside. Property is quite large where they had plenty of room to run outside. Weather was quite warm during our stay and window ac units kept it very nice and cool. Everything worked well. Very nice sunroom. Wish water pressure was greater in shower, but not surprising for the area. Home had all needed conveniences that worked great.
The property was perfect and everything was as expected, and even better! My family and I really loved the location and placement of the property. I brought a boat there and we were able to be on numerous beautiful lakes in under 10 minutes. Instructions were clear and this is probably the first rental I’ve done where I didn’t need to contact the owners. Wonderful!

Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, listing accuracy
Disliked: Location
We were ill-prepared for the property. Quality of the tap water was the only trouble. We also realized that this place is better suited to be there for a full week to two weeks, instead of the 3 days-2 nights we spent. Too much to do, and no time to do it. Next time, a week.
