About this property

Open the Door to Your Montana Adventure!

The StoneHouse at Duck Lake was designed and built by Montana songwriter, David Walburn, as a private retreat for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, fishermen, hunters and eco-minded travelers. If you are looking for a unique Montana vacation rental with access to real Montana adventures, look no further than the StoneHouse at Duck Lake.

Those who appreciate the wild beauty of Montana's east side, will also appreciate the simple artisan approach to this unique rustic home with exquisite views of Glacier Park's mountains.

The StoneHouse sits on a beautiful scenic ridge with panoramic views from the Cut Bank Plains to Chief Mountain and is centrally located to quickly access St. Mary's and Many Glacier entrance points into Glacier National Park.

David designed and built the StoneHouse using green building materials to enhance its durability and energy efficiency against the wild eastern Montana climate. He recently added a sauna to help our guest's relax from a day's outdoor adventures

-------MAIN LEVEL---------
The main level of the StoneHouse has two bedrooms:
1) First bedroom offers a QS bed with adjacent door to main bathroom. Sleeps 2
2) Second bedroom has a QS bed and bunk bed and can sleep up to 4 people (2 adults/2kids)

The StoneHouse can accommodate up to 6 people.

The main level Bathroom is a full bathroom with a sink/vanity plus a shower/tub combo. ***Please note that we are on hard water and the bathroom has natural "stains" of mineral water from the well. Water is pure, clean and safe to drink

The kitchen is fully equipped with refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and kitchen range. We have all the kitchen amenities to create a wonderful meal for family and friends. The open floor plan in the main room is perfect for connection, conversation and cooking!

View the wildlife from our large picture windows in the main room and watch the loons, elk, moose, bear, grebe, sage grouse, hawks, badgers, American pelican, owls, foxes, mice, wolves and more.

------LOWER LEVEL-----

One room with a queen bed and attached to a full bathroom.

Game room with full sized professional slate pool table!

We do not offer Wi-Fi. The reliability of wifi in our rural location made it impossible to keep a connection. We do have some access using Verizon so we encourage guests to use their phone as personal hotspots if needed. Unplug and enjoy the mountains and wildlife! (Version users can get great signal and use phone as hotspot for internet service. Sorry, no AT&T service available.

Grart location for hiking Glacier National Park
Geat location on the east side of Glacier National Park providing quick access to St. Mary's Valley, Logan's Pass, and Manny Glacier Valley sections of the park. Also just a 45 minute drive to Waterton National Park in Canada.

Great location, spacious, & clean
Owner responded promptly to all questions. Setting was gorgeous. It had ample supplies of towels, kitchen towels, dishes, plus many extras. Very close to St Mary's & Many Glacier.

Unique and stunning location on the "quiet side" of GNP
Great location for easy access to Many Glacier and St. Mary's entrances to GNP. Clean, comfortable, well stocked. Enjoy a most stunning view of the mountains of Glacier from the dining room table all day, every day. Loved the quiet, unplugged, remoteness of this location. No wifi. Verizon service worked best. Great communication from host at all times before, during and after the visit. Shop before you arrive as grocery stores nearby are limited (host told us that ahead of time as well) Saw moose, deer and cows on the land behind the house. Would stay there again and will recommend to friends. Perfect for those who want a quieter, Glacier National Park experience.

Incredible location and views
We enjoyed the house and the property. The views and location are ideal for East side (i.e., less crowded) entry into the park. Our only negative is that the basement is musty smelling. It would improve the house if there was a way to minimize that smell. While it wasn't a problem for our family members that stayed downstairs, there are others for whom that would have been unpleasant. Communication with owner was easy.

About the host

Hosted by David and JJ Walburn

Host profile image
David Walburn - Montana Singer•Songwriter, avid outdoor enthusiast, fly fisherman, hunter, hiker, skier, and homesteader. From 1999 to 2014, I worked at the historic Many Glacier Hotel as the resident musician, performing acoustic concerts for Glacier Park guests. I have lived in Montana for over 25 years and it's here that I feel most at home. Four of those summers were spent working nights performing and the days building the StoneHouse. It has been my mission to build something unique that people will enjoy, appreciate and, hopefully, wholly experience this amazing landscape with its vast and beautiful wilderness. This is definitely not your cookie cutter vacation rental. It is meant for those who have an adventurous spirit and a love of the American west, especially Montana!

Why they chose this property

We have been summer campers on Montana's east side for over 20 years and have fallen in love with its rugged beauty and wild landscape. We created a space - a travelers rest - that blends with this landscape. My wife and I realized that this space should be shared by those adventure travelers who want a different lodging experience other than the usual motel/hotel. It is meant for those who want to explore off the main highway, can unplug from modern life for awhile and appreciate the native country and culture of Montana.

What makes this property unique

Our family enjoys waking up at The StoneHouse wondering what the day's adventure will bring. We have caught mammoth rainbows on a fly rod, rode the float tube on endless quests searching for the perfect swimming hole, took the spotting scope for bird watching, bear spotting, and star gazing. We have gone on endless hikes into Glacier, had some banner kite flying days. In the winter we have trekked in snow shoes, sledded across the Duck's Head, skijored, ice fished, wrote kids songs, talked with owls and star gazed for hours, even experiencing the Northern Lights on occasion. What will your adventure be?
