About this property

Waterfront Historic Artist’s Home, with private beach, sleeps 10

Beachfront Historic Artist’s Residence

If you’re looking for 2 to 3 amazing weeks in prime vacation time, August 22 through Labor Day week to Sept 12, our home is available.
Fantastic location right on Peconic Bay, with lovely private beach just down the steps out front.
Generous indoor and outdoor spaces are perfect for family get- togethers.

See the sunrise over Peconic Bay in a historically Landmarked residence, once home to two prominent artists. Ideal for families, it’s located with a sunny south-facing 200’ private beach on the calm waters of the bay – great for sunning, swimming and boating. The 4 acre site is landscaped with outdoor garden tables, bay overlook with benches, porches and plenty of grass for family play. Side brick terrace has a warm water outdoor shower, changing room, and gas grill.

A blend of contemporary and antique furniture, oriental rugs and paintings in a spacious interior, make it an elegant yet cozy & comfortable vacation retreat, perfect for gatherings. Summer days can start on the screened-in dining porch with breakfast overlooking the bay and end with dinner for 8 to 10 by moonlight. The eat-in kitchen is large enough and fully equipped to cook at great meal together, with pantry and plenty of counter space, recently renovated with new appliances and laundry. There is a spare room above the kitchen with bay views that is perfect for a home office and extra single bed for one guest.

The 16’ x 33’ open living / dining room overlooks the bay, with several seating areas and window seat, A 1/2 bath is located off the first floor hallway.
The house has wifi, and the living room plus 4 of the bedrooms have mini split AC available…although the bay breezes and oak tree’s shade usually keep the house cool.

Called High House because of its unusual height, there are 5 bedrooms on two upper floors that sleep 10, furnished with antique and modern furnishings, all with water views: 2nd floor queen master bedroom and queen bedroom plus new bathroom with tub & shower; 3rd floor twin pink bedroom, double yellow bedroom, small double green bedroom, and new tile shower bathroom with skylight..

The locale offers many choices for a great vacation. There are award-winning vineyards and plentiful farm stands very nearby as well as fishing, boating, bicycling, and shops, restaurants and galleries in the towns of Greenport and Riverhead. Shelter Island and the Hamptons are easily accessible by ferry from Greenport. 2 hr drive from NY City, or via Hampton Jitney which stops nearby in Peconic.

Great location

This is a historic property with a lot of character and fantastic outdoor space. Very private and relaxing, with sun or shade always available. Hard to find something as perfect as this.

Superb!!

Our family spent a wonderful two weeks at High House in August this year. We came from Florida and Boston to Peconic and the North Fork. We were so happy to be able to spend time together in such a restful atmosphere. We come from a family of longtime Long Islanders but had not spent a lot of time on the North Fork except for day trips years ago. Since our vacation this summer, we have become strong “North Forkers” in spirit. Wendy was extremely helpful in recommending local farm stands, wineries, and other local businesses and her stories of her childhood and family in the house were fascinating. The weather was great and the beach and the bay were perfect for our mix of older children and adults of various ages as we swam and used our paddle boards and kayaks each day. We look forward to returning!!

A Unique Treat!

Vacation at High House and, beyond the winding beach and glistening bay, enjoy museum quality art and fascinating Long Island history. The spacious rooms are furnished eclectically, but definitely lean vintage. We loved the "summer dining room," a screened porch with panoramic views of Peconic Bay. Our family group of ten hopes to reprise our High House holiday.

We didn't want to leave!

The house was charming and comfortable, and we loved being right on the beach - so perfect for a small child and hosting a few friends. We hardly left the property, and every day we grilled and ate dinner on the screened in porch. We were so happy that next year we're renting for an additional week!

An Absolute and Rare Gem

This is one of the most unique and fabulous homes we have ever vacationed in and wonderful for family and friends. The house epitomizes the artists' colony that existed in Peconic more than 100 years ago. The beach is private and the sandy bay is perfect for kids. It's a very laid back place for enjoyment of simpler times and the perfect getaway to relax, reconnect and recharge.

A beach vacation far from the madding crowd

High House was a perfect place for our family gathering! Though secluded, it is conveniently located near some wonderful vineyards, restaurants and farm stands. The home overlooks the Peconic Bay wilth it's private beach a few steps away. During our two week stay, we enjoyed eating at local restaurants but had some memorable home cooked meals on the screen porch off the kitchen and outside on the terrace overlooking the bay; one could not ask for a more magical setting for dinner! The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. The first week of our visit was unseasonable hot but we slept well with air conditioning in each bedroom. The second week proved to be more pleasant, weather-wise, and we were very comfortable with the cross breezes cooling the house. High House has the usual quirks of an older home, but we accepted them and found ourselves going back in time, enjoying a slower pace of life.

The best vacation house on the North Fork!

My family and many guests have spent 3 summer vacations at this incredible property, High House. It is a completely secluded, quiet, well appointed vacation that feels like a true getaway. From the moment of arrival you are immediately transported to a different era where life slows down. I am always find myself putting down my phone and opening up one of the thousands of books around the house or staring at the incredible art painted, photographed and acquired by the Owners and family. High House is a classic old house by the sea that is appointed with all the modern convinces. It has everything you could need for a multiple week stay. We love to cook and host dinner parties and High House has many different spots for 10+ people to dine. Breakfast at the edge of the bluff overlooking the Peconic Bay and the rising sun. A candle lit dinner in the most comfortable screened porch ever. Lobster Dinner at the large dining table in the middle of the garden. A light lunch on the kitchen patio. A picnic in the front lawn. It goes on and on. The beds are super comfy. The bathrooms are renovated and well appointed. The eat in kitchen has everything you need. The classic old living room and dining room with fireplace is classic New England and perfect for cuddling up on that inevitable cool evening. The beach is perfect for everyone. We felt completely comfortable with our 6 and 8 year old playing and swimming with minimal observation. You can Walk out 100 yards at low tide to enjoy the whole Bay. The farmers market on the main road is a great morning walk to get your fruits and veggies for the day. Wendy is completely responsive to any issues. The washer broke on one stay and there was a new one installed the next day. The front lawn is perfect for all sports and activities from soccer and wiffle ball to star gazing at night. Level, large and grassy. The house is super convenient to many many vineyards, farm markets, Southold and Cutchogue towns. This is at the top of our list every year when we are thinking about our vacation.

High House, what a magical place. My wife and I spent two weeks at this house. The history of the painters and their paintings, period furniture, fireplace, dining facilities inside and outdoors, the beach, and the glorious views all in a comfortable and congenial world. Our stay after Memorial Day was perfect. Thank you. The weather and opportunity to have friends and family was just what we needed. David and Anneke Frazer, Prov., RI

A Waterfront Treasure for friends and Family

While staying at High House we were transported to a wonderful secluded historic family home overlooking the Peconic Bay. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with beautiful views of the water. The outside patio and garden offer shady nooks to relax overlooking the bay and beach below. The kitchen is well appointed and had everything we needed. We enjoyed eating in the screened in dining porch which is perfectly situated to enjoy the view. Being so close to the water we all enjoyed frequent dips or lengthy swims. Plus the walk along the sandy beach became a daily routine. The farm stands provide fresh fruit and vegetables and there are supermarkets nearby. The North Fork has many attractions and restaurants with Greenport being a good destination for everyone's needs just 15 mins away. We also enjoyed the beer garden and tasting wine at some of the local vineyards. However, most days it was hard to tear ourselves away from these beautiful surroundings. The owner responded right away to our questions and we certainly look forward to another vacation at High House.

An elegant yet comfortable getaway for vacation with family and friends

This was a great house to getaway and be with both family and friends. I really enjoyed cooking in the well-appointed kitchen with screened in porch for informal dining, and more formal dining living area for meals with houseguests. There’s an outdoor patio where we enjoyed our morning coffees and then cocktails at the end of the day—all overlooking the beautiful Peconic Bay. The warm bay water is great place for swimming—especially for young kids with its sandy beach and gentle sloping shore. We found great seashells walking along the beach and the bikes in garage provided a fun way to explore the town, and pick up local produce at roadside stands. (There are also some great restaurants, wineries and local craft beer in the area) This house served as our home base for outings into Greenport, the Hamptons and Shelter Island and Wendy was a responsive and generous owner. I would highly recommend this elegant yet comfortable home for a vacation.

High House has been a special place for my family for 4 generations. It was begun by my great-grandparents, who moved the house to it's beautiful location in 1911 to be part of an artist's colony. As a child I enjoyed every summer here with my grandparents and now return often with my husband and children.

Why they chose this property

A house imbued with family history in an extraordinary location.

What makes this property unique

We love the peaceful, relaxing world here, with beach walks and views of the bay that are always changing- from sunrise and sunset to full moon reflections. We also appreciate being close to preserved farmland and vineyards, so we can enjoy fresh produce, local products and of course delicious wine!
