Desert hide-away and architectural throwback

The Glass House is built around a circular kitchen, which was well stocked and legibly labelled. The panoramic views from the open living area featured desert specimens and local wildlife. The house was comfortable enough for a few days stay. The temperatures the week of our visit peaked at 117 F, so we were glad the air conditioning kept the house comfortable without issue.

Birthday Weekend in the Desert

I loved my stay in the glass house celebrating my birthday with my husband and two grown sons. We spent one day exploring Joshua Tree National Park which is close by. At night we went for dinner in Palm Springs which has many restaurants , shops and galleries. The next day we got a day pass in a nearby spa for massages and soaking in the hot mineral springs. Mostly, I just enjoyed sitting outdoors on the grounds of the house with the majestic views.

Rave Reviews for the Round House

Six of us stayed in the Round House over Christmas. What a unique and eccentric place to stay! Sure we could've rented a cookie cutter condo but we opted for character and boy did we get it. The house was clean and well appointed. We absolutely loved the front patio area and spent most of our time out there soaking in the sunshine and enjoying the peaceful vibes from the yard. While there we enjoyed trips to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree NP. Communication with the owner and the property manager was great and they were both very responsive with my many inquiries. We would stay here again for sure. Thank you!

Great Location for Desert Exploring

We really enjoyed our stay at this house. The front garden is a wonderful place for bird watching with a great variety of birds. We love the quails! The property is in a good location to easily get to Joshua Tree and also to the Indian Canyons and Palm Springs areas. We are hikers and really loved the variety of hikes. Our favorites were the Indian Canyons hike to the Seven Sisters Waterfall, the Morongo Valley Preserve and Mt. Ryan in Joshua Tree. The house is fairly well equipped and the kitchen is in a great location to both cook, chat and view the world outside. Thank you, Catherine

Breathtaking

This property was wonderful to stay in. It felt so peaceful. Just about everything you need is available. You have neighbors but they are far enough away that you have a lot of privacy. We enjoyed the many bird species but especially the quail and dove families. ( wished the hummingbirds stayed around longer but most of the spring flowers were gone. ) Many rabbits and white tailed antelope squirrels running around too. Many things to do in the area but the house is so comfortable you almost don’t even care if you leave. Would stay here again.

A Beauty in the Desert!

Our month at the Glass Round house was wonderful ! This home is comfortable, well stocked and the owner is extremely responsive and caring. The sunrises and sunsets over the mountains are breathtaking. The bird and small animal activity are interesting and entertaining. We found 3 bird nests w eggs in the chollas' on the property! We appreciated the basket full of pamphlets & day trip suggestions. There is so much to do and see in this area ! Thank you Jane for a fabulous month in the desert!

Wonderful Retreat

The other 5-star reviews do a good job of describing the features that make this house so special, so I'l just add that I've stayed at the Glass House numerous times over the past 3-4 years, which says something in itself, and brought numerous friends and relatives here, all of whom have enjoyed it thoroughly and expressed interest in returning - and that the house is located on a quiet street on the edge of Desert Hot Springs at an elevation that provides a scenic view of Coachella Valley and 10,500 Mt. San Jacinto as well as an unobstructed view of sunsets over the mountains. The owner keeps the property up to snuff and is responsive to any questions and concerns. Once again, I'm hoping to return as soon as possible.

Wonderful Place to Stay, Especially for Group/Family

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Round House. The main feature is its approximate 42' of continuous floor-to-ceiling windows that spans the living room and overlooks the nice, desert landscaped yard. There was just the two of us, so really didn't take advantage of the home's numerous rooms. By the way, since the house is round, some of the rooms are pie-shaped as was the master BR. It would be a great place for a family, or two couples, or more. The house appears to have been built in the 50's or 60's, and was probably quite the place in its time. Although a bit weather-worn outside, it is very comfortable and has all the amenities you need, including a nice garage that fits one vehicle comfortably. The house is in Desert Springs which is about a half-hour away from Palm Springs, Palm Desert, etc. But that is probably why we got it for the price we did. However, it is that much closer to Joshua Nat'l Park. Please note: the instructions for entering the house are a bit confusing. As far as we could tell, there is NOT an active alarm system one needs to disarm upon entering. Simply a lock box with the keys you need to come and go.

Unique desert retreat with a few glitches

This round house is a quiet retreat with cholla and desert landscaping that made us want to spend all of our time in the front yard, watching hummingbirds, quail, roadrunners, and rabbits and enjoying the view of Mount San Jacinto. This place is set up for family gatherings and retreats, with a well-equipped kitchen (cabinets labeled so you can find everything!), lots of seating in the main room, and beds galore. It was great to have access to the garage and the washer and dryer. Overall, this is a clean, lovely, welcoming home. A few things to know: Because of the vegetation, the front yard feels pretty private, especially if you park your car to block the view from the driveway that goes behind the house. There is also a fairly private and shaded side yard. The back yard is not private because there is another house on the 1-acre lot, with direct lines of sight to the back sitting area, and into the back bedroom/sitting room. People from the other house on the property occasionally showed up unannounced, chasing a dog or doing something with the garbage cans, and they tended to look at us when going up their driveway. If you want real privacy, this isn't a great set-up. Neighbors tend to keep to themselves, but one next-door neighbor plays elevator music outdoors almost every day, all day. And sometimes dogs bark all around the house, though this was not an ongoing issue while we were there. There are small problems that would be easy enough to fix, like missing slats on vertical blinds (particularly in the front of the house, making it especially difficult to reduce glare and reflections on the TV ). Many windows needed touch-up cleaning (hand prints, fingerprints, nose prints, etc.), and the floors needed to be mopped. Toward the left end, beware of the knee-banger rock sticking out! The biggest issue for us was checking in. Jane assured us her cleaners wear masks and we asked for doors and windows to be opened for ventilation. We arrived a bit early to check in, and found out that the house cleaner was not wearing a mask and did not appear to have one with her. We ended up opening up the house and waiting for it to air out before moving in. It's impossible to know whether COVID precautions are followed unless you see yourself — and unfortunately, we saw they were not followed. We accidentally broke a mirror in the house (sorry Jane!), and Jane has been easy to work with to arrange payment for the replacement.

Amazing & Unique desert house

What a special place! We loved the architecture, collectibles, cactus garden, and peacefulness. We made a big Thanksgiving feast here, and it was a perfect setting and the (round) kitchen, though cosy, had everything necessary included great oven and induction cooktop. Then we enjoyed a few quieter days and it was an equally wonderful place to unwind. The views of the sunrises, sunsets, and lively garden are amazing. A few practical notes: The sleeping areas include 2 private bedrooms, a huge "camping" room with several beds and more mattresses, and another listed bedroom with 2 twins that is actually the passageway into the bunk room. There is no dishwasher. One suggestion - add a fire pit on the beautiful front terrace! Thanks much for sharing your amazing home!

A Lovely Quiet Stay

This is our second girls trip to the round house and we simply love it here. There is lots of space, so you can either nap in your room while watching the critters outside or you can do puzzles in the main room gazing through the panoramic window. Super relaxing. (Also if you have time, hit a hot springs spa and the Cabot Pueblo Museum.)

Fun place that's a little kooky

Rolling up to this place, I was worried I was lost. It's pretty far north of Palm Springs proper (25 minutes), it's on a dirt road in a quasi-suburban neighborhood, and the house is set pretty far back from the road. But once we found it and got inside, the kids were pumped. While somewhat dated, the home has lots of space and interesting/weird details that make it fun. The furniture is mod and eclectic, as is the decor (and these are good things). Some of the spaces are cramped - and it was hard to figure out how to use the cook top - but the A/C and fans worked great and the beds were comfortable. Everyone loved the wildlife that's right out the door - the pheasants were a big hit. The adults loved the nice outdoor space and the kids loved the huge bedroom with beds for everyone. And the home design is surprisingly interesting - I kept noticing little details even after a couple of days. If I had to complain, we got tired of bumping into things in the smaller bathroom, and we found some bugs inside. But nothing we couldn't handle, and travel is an adventure. Suffice to say, if you're looking for a big and fun/kooky place not too far from Palm Springs, you found it.

About the host

At age 18 I read the Adele Davis book 'Lets Eat Right to Keep Fit.' That was 60 years ago. That was my bible. I have been on the path to health and nutrition ever since. Too many people today encourage diseases by their poor nutrition and by overeating. Today we MUST supplement our nutrition with appropriate vitamins and minerals because our many foods are lacking those essential elements that we need to sustain a good long and healthful life. Desert life fits right into a healthful way of life. Lots of new changes. This beautiful Glass House is my RETREAT.

Why they chose this property

I fell in love with the gardens on this 1.2 acre property. The Round Glass House is a dream come true. Wild life is abundant. When I stay here I go nowhere else. I just sit and look at the beauty and the squirrels, chipmunks, quail, roadrunners, cottontails, and an occasional coyote. Night sunsets with bright stars!!! Shining all over the universe! Also have a wonderful manager Alex Terraza who can be called at any time.

What makes this property unique

Only 6 blocks to the famous Spas of Desert Hot Springs. Walking trails, hikes, 45 minutes to Joshua Tree, golf courses, great restaurants, 15 minutes to Palm Springs. The house is equipped with everything. Just bring yourselves. We have a new DVR which makes it easy to turn on the TV. Record what you like and watch later at your convenience.

At night the lights go on in the front and back gardens automatically. It is a light garden show. Sit outside at night and you may think you are in Paradise!!!
