About this property

Reconnect With Nature at The Briar Patch

Enter an enchanting mix of rustic nostalgia and modern comforts within a harmonious aesthetic. Take in the river from the porch swing or hot tub, cozy up to the stone fireplace or outside fire pit. Fishing & skiing are close: 15 miles to Sugar or Beech Mountains.

You have full access to both cabins: the main house hosts the peaceful queen bedroom, bunk room, loft, main bathroom & shower (no tub), kitchen and dining room. The smaller separate cottage hosts the relaxing king bedroom, private bath, and laundry. If you have small children, please be aware that our property has some steep slopes.

The main house contains a master queen bedroom with private french doors onto the deck, a bunkroom to sleep 3, a vaulted greatroom with huge stone fireplace, comfy kitchen with all the modern amenities, a stone sunroom with dining room and reading nook, double vanity bathroom with sunken shower, and a loft retreat for 65" 4K TV and games!

A guest house (included in your reservation) right behind contains a master king bedroom, private bath, and laundry room...and a charming porch swing overlooking the river. Family adventures, romantic getaways, meditative retreats. Envision walking through the woods up behind the cabin, maybe even finding the hidden gazebo! The large deck makes for a great space to sit and look at the scenic hills and water just below. Imagine the cows mooing and the reclusive bald eagle flying overhead. The mountains are just what you need!

In the winter, we recommend a 4WD vehicle to get up the driveway in case of snow!

Once you're all settled in, you can begin planning your adventures in the High Country...from shopping excursions in quaint Blowing Rock to epic hikes on the Appalachian Trail to zip-lining and ropes courses. From fine dining to fly fishing to river tubing to snow skiing, the choices are endless. Or just throw some logs on the fire, light up the grill, and hole up in your own luxurious retreat where all you can hear is the geese landing on the river and the cows mooing in the meadow. It's a magical place, and we'd love to share it with you!

The area is full of beautiful hiking on the Appalachian Trail, exciting zip-lining and ropes courses, and relaxing fly-fishing spots and river tubing. Head to the quaint towns nearby to sample tasty local foods and brews, and browse the antique shops. Once you book with us, we'll send you our thorough visitors guide to the area for lots of specific recommendations.

Completely renovated in the summer of 2018, the Briar Patch brings an enchanting mix of rustic nostagia and modern comfort in a whimsical, one-of-a-kind getaway you won't want to leave!

The Briar Patch was all the photos show and so much more. Relaxing, rejuvenating and a wonderful space for connection. The property is very well kept, clean and very well stocked with kitchen ware and cooking needs. The communication with the owners was wonderful and so helpful in giving information about the area. We are already looking at our calendars to see when we can plan our next trip to the Briar Patch.

Cozy and Quaint

We really enjoyed our stay. My husband and I stayed in the cottage. Normally, when we go on vacations, we are constantly on the go. This time was different. We enjoyed the hot tub, the fire pit, and the view. We can't stop talking about what a great time (relaxing time) we had. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful Getaway

This cabin was just as advertised, nestled on the side over a mountain overlooking the mountain river! A quick walk down the road leads to breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. The cabin was perfect for 3 generations of my family and the wood burning fireplace and snow while we were there topped it all off. A quick 30 minute trip to Sugar Mountain for the kids to snow ski was very convenient and it's a very quick trip into Boone as well for walking around and enjoying local shops. We would definitely recommend you consider staying here if you are looking for a peaceful retreat during winter or summer! You won't regret it!

Winter Break

This place is a gem! Nestled between Boone and Banner Elk. Our Kids love it… We did snow tubing at Sugar Mountain and It’s near Boone Downtown and Blowing rock if you want to dine in the restaurants. The Briar patch is so cozy and warm. Perfect if you want to escape the busy life in the city. The jacuzzi and Bonfire made this place extremely awesome! Very clean and complete with all the kitchen equipment that you’ll need and the Hosts are very hospitable and welcoming. Thank you Briar Patch for making our winter break memorable. God bless you Jerome and Kellie!

Relaxing North Carolina Getaway

We had a wonderful time staying at this unique and fun property. We hated we could only stay 2 nights. We stayed with our two young children who loved the bunk room! The main cabin is really wonderful. The second, smaller cabin is such a neat part of the property! We enjoyed eating dinner at the table outside. We have stayed at a lot of cabins over the years, and this one is cozy, but with plenty of space at the same time. The only thing I would add is something about the history of the cabin! I would've loved to have known the age of the original part of the cabin and where the buildings originated. Overall, we hope we can return and stay longer next time!

Outstanding property with many fabulous spaces to enjoy the people you love, with plenty of privacy in a gorgeous setting! Inside there is a festive dining room with seating for 8, a cook together, fully stocked kitchen, game night living room. The hosts have made all rooms welcoming with added touches - books, games, soft throws (which came in useful for morning coffee!), plenty of seating. The main bedroom is so cozy, and the bunk room is fairly private and functional. The main bath is large and the shower room spa-like! Windows everywhere bring the outside in.The cottage house is a huge adder that is rarely seen in a rental of this size. Beautifully done with a comfy king and everything you need, it gives added privacy and a little more luxury. The deck here has a magnificent view, as does the laundry room in the rear of the cottage house. Made me a bit envious.:)The middle open-air space is fantastic!! We had coffee outside every morning and watched the cows, turkeys and other birds along with the clouds. We grilled and ate outside at the table. We enjoyed the hot tub with the view and the firepit! The area is packed with local flora and was fun to explore. This continued on the many walks along the river road.I rented The Briar Patch, after much research, for my daughter's graduation from ASU and to have a place to bring my elderly mother to for all of us to celebrate this event together. It by far exceeded our expectations!!! Thank you.

It's disappointing to get 4 stars when we work so hard to provide a 5-star experience... particularly when the guest didn't mention any problems at all. Even here in the review there is no mention of a problem. Oh well...

Tom and Dan are the owners and live in Chapel Hill, NC where they enjoy getting up to the mountains as often as possible. With young children, they love to introduce them to the beauty and adventures in this natural wonderland... especially the serenity of the Watauga River. Jerome and Kellie are the property concierge and live in Boone where they enjoy waking up to the mountains every day! They love hosting families in their boutique retreat homes and creating wonderful memories of this special area.

Why they chose this property

Valle Crucis feels like a step back in time to a simpler era. The Mast General store (both the original and the annex) exude the aura of yesteryear, and the expansive park invites picnics and playdates for the kids. Summertime brings Music in the Park every Friday night, and wintertime brings skiing on the nearby slopes. The Watauga River carries a magic all its own, whether you're looking for world-class fly fishing or simply chasing minnows around the bank. Lean back in the adirondack chairs around the firepit and unwind.

What makes this property unique

Unique defines the Briar Patch. There is simply nothing else like it. With hand-hewn timbers, original wood floors, a massive chandelier that soars above the great room, natural branch railings, and an adorable cottage out back, it is truly one of a kind. All this refined rustic charm is perched above the river with its stone boulders and meadow views. It is the epitome of relaxation and renewal.
