Very happy with our stay. Much closer to downtown than we thought it would be, easy in and out. Beautiful view, they had coffee / filters / creamer / sugar ready for us and we really appreciated it. Definitely bears all around - we saw a bunch of them and they tried to get into our cars. That said these aren’t big grizzlies- these are under 200lbs black bears (saw two cubs as well) who only want to get out of our way, but still need to be aware with cars/garbage/etc. Easy check-in, very good communications, did I mention the beautiful view? The A/C’s are separate so my son - who likes it cooler than the rest of us at night - could not freeze the rest of us out. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you.

Thank you for your review! We are very happy that you were pleased with your stay.
We had a wonderful stay! Our views were absolutely incredible. The property offered everything we needed PLUS some. The recycling of spices and left items paper goods is absolutely wonderful and I wish every rental realized the same. We will definitely be back to this location for future Mountain visits.
This mountain cabin is fine. Looks like they did a lot of the remodel work themselves. Not luxurious or high end finishes/details but overall ok. The location and views are nice. We encountered two bears in the middle of the day that came down the driveway. Both bears tried to open the car door. Make sure to lock your car at ALL times!!!

Lara, thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed Howland House’s location and mountain views. While the bears can certainly be surprising, encounters like the one you described are actually very common in this area of the mountains. Keeping vehicles locked and food secured helps prevent bears from getting too curious ;) We appreciate your note about the finishes as well, and we’ll continue making thoughtful updates where we can. Thanks again for staying with us and for sharing your experience!
Howland House was a lovely place to stay. Our family of four and our dog really enjoyed our time there. The house is in a quiet location with spectacular mountain views. The house has also recently been significantly renovated, and while massive improvements have been made to the kitchen and general living areas, some of the finishes such as closets, windows, and bathrooms seem to be in the first stage of renovation. We look forward to seeing how renovations continue as the house is well on the way to being a gem. The management company was responsive to the issues we experienced with the fireplace not working properly and the hot tub not being warm when we wanted to use it. While the fireplace issue was not resolved during our stay, the hot tub issue was resolved. If you are planning to use the hot tub, make sure to bring flip flops as you will have to walk all the way through the house and the front entrance to get to the hot tub as the garage access to the hot tub is locked.

Thank you for your review! We’re very happy that you were pleased with your stay.
We enjoyed our stay at Howland House. It was convenient to the downtown area and secluded enough to give that mountain feel. The house was well appointed with all the amenities needed for a nice relaxing stay. We enjoyed walking the secluded road up from the house. Do your self a favor and take the paved path to the left right before you get up the gate at the top of the road. It’s an easy walk and you feel like you are truly immersed in nature. I enjoyed drinking my morning coffee on the porch and watching the humming birds compete for food at the feeders and listening to the various bird calls in the woods. Make sure to lock your car doors because we did have muddy bear prints on the doors. However, we never encountered any bears, but we did see a wild turkey cross the road which was a nice treat. The road leading to the houses on Howland properties needs some TLC, but that’s no fault of the property owners. One thing that definitely needs attention is a better seating option in the tv room. The old outdated futon needs to go. It’s very uncomfortable and doesn’t go with the rest of the decor in the property. I know it provides a sleeping option for guests, but there are better arrangements that could be made for guests We would definitely stay here again on a return trip to Asheville.
