Wonderful house on a wine estate just a few miles from glorious Orvieto
The little house had everything you could need and has been extremely well thought through. It was hot when we were there but inside was cool and calm with lovely comfortable furnishings. Orvieto is only a few miles away with lots of restaurants and bars and with a supermarket just down the road everything was to hand. Our hosts invited us to a wine event in their vineyard which was excellent and we were able to buy their wine all week. Driving in Italy isn't for the feint hearted and you do need to drive everywhere, the only drawback is that we couldn't find any restaurants close by - however, this is not unusual in Umbria. The swimming pool is glorious and much bigger than you would get with a private villa, it has plenty of shade but you do need to walk a good 10/15 mins through the estate or a quick 3 minute drive. Our hosts were very kind and gracious
Impossible to overstate the drama of this view
This intimate property is perhaps under-sold by VRBO. It is part of large old winery estate and sits on a bluff overlooking the medieval city of Orvieto. The 2-story guest cottage's upstairs kitchen/sitting room opens toward a covered patio draped in jasmine framing an amazing view of the city. We cooked dinner at home (the kitchen is well supplied and there's also a small grill) and ate on this patio before retiring to the lawn chairs to enjoy the region's wine as the sun set over the city. It was a great way to wind down each day after sight-seeing and business. The bedrooms are simple and sufficient. The laundry machine enables you to pack light for your trip if you choose. The estate is home to a donkey, a horse, 2 peacocks, a friendly dog and a few savvy cats - who made quick friends with our young son and routinely checked in to find him. The winery property includes 3+ miles of country lanes, which we walked to reach the shared pool. Orvieto itself is less than 2 miles away and offered plenty of sights - from its Duomo to underground caverns to the best pizza we've ever eaten. The train station and the adjacent AutoStrada make Orvieto a great jump-off point for exploring the rest of Umbria and Southern Tuscany/Northern Lazio. The property owner Simonetta was an gracious hostess and was very accommodating with logistics and advice - they take great care of this family property. The cottage, named Il 2, is billed as a "cozy country house" and it is just that and much more. They say location is everything - and it's hard to put a price on the serenity this cottage's location affords.
Charming guest cottage
We had a wonderful stay at Il 2. We spent about two weeks in Italy at 3 different rentals and this was our favorite by far. It was very easy to reach by rental car from the highway, and Orvieto is small enough we navigated pretty easily. Enjoyed Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio and a day trip by train into Rome. But our favorite was the afternoon walking the estate and enjoying the beautiful pool. Our kids loved the winery’s dog, cats, and even peacocks when they were near the cottage. Having two bathrooms was so nice with kids, and a rare treat in Europe! And the hospitality was the best! We hope to return again some day.
Le Vellette 2
Everything about this house was perfect. Set in a vineyard with a winery and an astonishing view of Orvieto. If you want tranquility and solitude and still be within easy drive of everything Umbria has to offer, this is the place. The owner, Simonetta lives next door. She is charming and very accommodating. For us this was the ideal home for 10 wonderful days.
Incredible views, lovely villa
Beautiful small villa with unbelievable views of Orvieto and the valley below. Simonetta greeted us and gave us a tour of the home and property. A highlight of our stay was a wine tasting at the main building of Tenuta Le Velette. We received a bottle of their wine as a welcome gift and of course, bought more, it was so good.
Note that this property might not work well for anyone with mobility issues. The bedrooms and one bathroom are on the first level, with a spiral staircase connecting to the kitchen and the second bathroom, which is off the kitchen. The bedrooms are accessible from the outside but there are still some steps involved.
Overall, we loved our stay. Special thanks to Simonetta for being such a warm and welcoming host!
Peaceful idyllic countryhouse.
We spent 9 wonderful nights in Simonetta 's country house. We had spent the previous 2 1/2 weeks in hotels and loved having our own own private fully equipped guesthouse. The setting was peaceful in the middle of the vineyard, the view was spectacular and the wine wonderful too. We took day trips each day but were always anxious to get back to the house to enjoy the sunset view over Orvieto and a glass of wine before dinner... which we cooked in the house each night. It was so nice to have home cooking after all the restaurant meals. We recommend the COOP in Orvieto new-town for your shopping. Simonetta was very accommodating with our requests. We loved the visits from the cats and dogs that came by to make sure we were OK. We enjoyed our walks over the property. A wonderful way to unwind and enjoy a bit of real Italy. We recommend it highly. Bob and Ellen Proctor.
