A true piece of American history - The Manwaring House.
Welcome to Manwaring House. As stated in the description this is a historic colonial home, but was moved and rebuilt in 1995. So all the systems in the home are modern. The home is 4500 sq ft. It is three floors.
This pre-revolutionary home was moved from New London Connecticut in 1995 and rebuilt in Granville. This Georgian home played a prominent role in the Revolution and the War of 1812 and played host to two US presidents. The home has four bedrooms and 3.5 baths. A gourmet kitchen and luxurious primary bath. Tranquil salt water heated pool. Plus fresh eggs from our our chickens
There are three bedrooms on the second floor. One is the primary with an attached bath. The bedroom has a king size bed. There is a flat screen mounted on the wall. All TV's in the house are equipped with AppleTV. This room has a wood burning fireplace with a beautiful mantle. A closet is available. The bathroom has been recently renovated and features a freestanding tub and open shower. The other two bedrooms have queen beds and closets and beautiful views of the grounds. There is a full bath for these two rooms to share. The suite in the attic has a queen bed and it's own bathroom with a shower. The room is very charming with 3 dormer windows with beautiful views.
The first floor has a center hall entry with stairs to the second floor. The floors on this floor are the originals from the 1700's. The living room has seating for 5 with a frame television. There is a wood burning fireplace as well. The dining room has a round table with seating for 6. There is also a wood burning fireplace with colonial mantle. The library has a cozy wood burning fireplace and a leather sofa. This room played host to James and Dolly Madison, who were good friends with Mr. Manwaring. Andrew Jackson was also a visitor.
The kitchen was recently renovated keeping in mind the historical home. A large island made of marble is in the center. A table for 4 is in the room. The highlight of the room is large original cooking fireplace. This has been converted to gas for easy use.
The grounds are like being in the middle of a park, with many places to sit and relax. The pool is heated and salt water. The deck is covered in travertine. There are floor loungers with umbrellas. Here you will also see Hebe our recent antique statue find. Goddess of eternal youth, a nice one to have around. The back deck has two sofas with an umbrella for sunny days. Between them is a fire pit for chilly fall nights. At the edge of the forest is a outdoor dining area with seating for 8.
There is chicken coop back in forest. They are all free range. They keep to themselves. We let them out in the morning and put them to bed every night. Because them needing tending, we stay in the basement apartment which has a separate entrance. We are available if any issues arise. Interaction is at the guest’s discretion.
Parking is available at the end of crushed granite driveway.
Granville is a quaint New England style village and home to Denison University. The village has shops and some great restaurants. This house and property are absolutely stunning; the photos don't do it justice. The attention to detail in every aspect of this place is unmatched. Granville is so quaint, with its storybook downtown, making the entire trip feel like a getaway even though we were only 30 minutes from downtown Columbus. We couldn't recommend it enough and are planning to make this trip an annual tradition!
The house is lovely but the description of the listing is purposefully misleading. This is a partial rental...not a full house and they have full access to all sleeping quarters via the door that goes from the basement directly into the middle of the kitchen (an old farmhouse door closed by a flip latch). The owners were in the basement and they were so loud that we couldn't even hear each other without shouting across the kitchen...it was pretty wild. While the noise was invasive, the safety concerns that arose from being under the same roof with strangers were simply too significant to ignore for my wife and kids so we ended up leaving in just under 5 minutes after arrival. If you don't mind communal living (or political signs on the front lawn) then this place is a fine place to stay at. It is def a lovely historic house but it is very hard to justify this price on a relative basis to what options exist right in town (even more so when considering this is a partial living space). We were extremely fortunate to find alternative accommodations at the Granville Inn in the heart of Granville which was so lovely and is within walking distance of everything....the service, the food and the grounds were all exceptional and at a significantly better price for one of their top suites. I would highly recommend staying there (or the Buxton Inn across the street)...both places are wonderful...you can't go wrong staying right in the middle of town.

Thank you for acknowledging that the Manwaring House is a lovely historic home. However, several statements in this review are factually inaccurate, and because these guests chose to leave within approximately five minutes of arriving and never actually stayed in the home, we feel it is important to clarify the record for prospective guests.
Our listing clearly discloses that during guest stays, the owners may occupy a completely separate basement apartment in order to care for the property and our chickens. The apartment has its own exterior entrance. There are no shared interior living spaces, no shared stairwell, and guests have exclusive use of the main house and its outdoor amenities. The door separating the two areas remains secured. The suggestion that we have "full access to all sleeping quarters" or that staying here constitutes "communal living" is simply not an accurate description of the property or the guest experience.
The claim regarding excessive noise is equally puzzling. At the time these guests arrived, one owner was quietly in the house with our dog and the other was asleep in the bedroom. There was no gathering, party, music, or other activity occurring that could reasonably have produced the level of noise described in this review.
These same concerns were raised with Vrbo after the guests left, and the matter went through Vrbo's formal dispute process. Vrbo reviewed the circumstances, including the disclosures contained in our listing, and the decision was made in our favor.
Regarding the reference to a political sign: there is a small RESIST sign in our garden. We make no apology for peacefully expressing our values at our own home, just as we respect the right of our guests to hold beliefs different from ours.
As to whether the Manwaring House is "worth the price," that is naturally subjective. This is a private, centuries-old historic residence with extensive grounds and a resort-style pool—not a hotel room—and we believe our photographs, description, amenities, and guest reviews accurately represent the experience we offer. Our many five-star reviews from guests who have actually stayed in the home speak far more meaningfully to that experience.
For prospective guests who would like to judge the property for themselves, we invite you to view our full video tour on YouTube by searching "The Manwaring House - 250 Potters Lane, Granville Ohio." The video provides an extensive look at the home, its history, grounds, and accommodations.
We encourage prospective guests to watch the video, carefully read the complete listing and our many five-star reviews, and decide for themselves whether the Manwaring House is the right experience for them. We are proud of this very special home and of the experience we have provided to the many guests who have chosen to stay here.
I've stayed in rentals all over the world, and this rental ranks towards the top of my list. We absolutely loved everything about it - the home was beyond charming, the property beautiful, and our host was kind and accommodating. As animal lovers, we were thrilled to get to meet all the creatures on the property, including all 4 dogs - 2 of which hung out on the lounge chairs with us by the pool. I rented this home to celebrate the 50th birthday of my life-long best friend who said she wanted to "lay in a pool" all day. I shared this with our host who had the pool open, floaties and towels waiting for us, and waters by the cooler. The home has everything you could possibly need and more. I love to cook - and the kitchen is perfection. When I asked our host about check out procedures (I didn't see anything in the book with instructions on the home) I was told not to worry about it. Of course, we left the home as we found it - but having been at other properties with a laundry list of check out items, I found this refreshing. I want to thank Tony and Scott for opening their incredible home and allowing us to experience the paradise they've meticulously created. I wish both of you, all your geese, ducks, chicken, turkeys, kitties and doggies all the health and happiness life has to offer. Cheers!
