About this property

1 bed/ba lakeside cottage, large deck, west side of Seneca Lake. Pet Friendly!

This lakeside cozy, 698 square feet of cottage has drive-up access and will put a smile on your face. A gorgeous two level deck will ensure you get panoramic lake view for a beautiful Seneca Lake sunrise and offers shade or sun for your afternoon relaxation. This cottage, originally built as officer barracks on Sampson Air Force Station, then upon base closure sold and relocated to its current location (currently the Sampson State Park is located directly east across the lake).

After descending 15 steps off the deck you can enjoy 105 feet of frontage choosing between natural-sloped shale beach or 60 linear feet of flat lawn created by a break wall. Enjoy time on the pile-driven, 100 ft trex dock with an enlarged platform for lounging at the end.

The Stowaway is less than two miles north of Fox Run Vineyards, in the heart of the Seneca Lake wine country. It is located seven miles south of Geneva, within two miles of Smokin' Pete's Barbeque, four miles south of Roy’s Marina, Port’s Restaurant, Vonnie’s Boathouse. It is 28 miles north of Watkins Glen. There are 3 short term rentals within walking distance of this property owned by different owners but may be available for different groups.

I’ve been the owner of this family property since 2002. This is my primary winter residence and am happy to share the summer with you! I've installed new water resistant flooring (2026) and have a new pull out couch (2025). I can assure you there is nothing better than a quiet morning on the deck over looking the sunrise.

Please Note***This property is alongside the Finger Lakes railway line. This is an active rail line with trains passing by up to several times a day sounding horns during the day and night - weekends are usually not active. This line runs the length of Seneca Lake on the west side so any property along this side of the lake will be affected. There is a 7 mph speed limit for vehicles driving on Locust Grove. This is not an ideal property for toddlers, please be aware of the large drop from the deck.

This property is not handicap accessible.

The cottage is very cute and has an ideal location right on the lake with a dock. It is an older property but overall clean. The living room is spacious and comfortable. The property has everything you need to be comfortable. The air conditioning is also adequate. The outside of the property could use some upkeep, but the location and view really outweigh the cosmetic things. Overall we had a very pleasant and relaxing stay.

We agreed with our host Maryanne it was a gorgeous cottage overlooking beautiful Seneca Lake. Enjoyed with our dog the two level deck and lawn from sunrises to stargazing.Besides the panoramic lake view it was close to a few of our favorite breweries, restaurants and wineries. A perfect spot between Geneva and Watkins Glen for sightseeing tooOur dog especially enjoyed going in the water at the shale beach and finding lost dog toys in nearby bushes and vines off the deck. Definitely a great lakefront destination!

Location was ideal right on the lake with a dock. The deck was smaller then we initially expected and a bit overgrown. The railroad was a bit too close for comfort. But wineries were also close.

My sisters, niece and I rented this property to attend a nearby concert. We were there for one night. The communication was effective and the property is as listed. The view of the lake is quite pretty. The house is right by rail road tracks and the parking is quite tight (for a large SUV). The cleanliness of the property was not quite what I am used to for VRBO properties where I have stayed. (Cob webs, bugs, outdoor furniture had not been used or cleaned in a while).

Inside of cottage was as pictured and described, and clean. Outside areas left a lot to be desired: front lawn had dog poop all over (it was nice having a dog friendly property for our pups, but the yard was a mess). Neighbor’s dogs wander around and left poop on the front step- not a nice surprise to step on. Lakeside yard had junk strewn about- old animal traps, gas cans, broken screens, etc. The shrubs were overgrown onto the deck and back steps. Only one of the burners works on the grill. The overall lakeside ambience was distracted by the lack of maintenance/cleanliness of the yard and deck. The cottage lost power for 2 partial days of our 4 day stay (first time during a light rain, second time during a significant storm). Disappointing communication with the owner during this- no proactive communication despite the owner being aware, and a snarky response when asked if the electric company had provided any updates. No flashlights etc available in the cabin- I understand power may be more unreliable in this rural area, but all the more reason to supply the cottage with essentials and communicate with your guests.

I'm unsure how old the listing photos were but everything was very overgrown. The deck had vines and weeds growing very tall, like it hadn't been landscaped at all. This promoted many bugs and mosquitoes. We had to go to Lowe's and buy citronella candles to semi-enjoy the deck in the evening. The outside trash can was overflowing when we arrived for our stay so that brought flies and smell. We couldn't put our trash that we accumulated anywhere. There were gas cans, broken patio furniture and an old screen door thrown off to the side of the porch. We wanted to open the French door to bring in cool air at night but it allowed bugs in which gathered all over the house and bit up my wife. We understand that we are by the lake but the windows and sills were covered in bugs like no one wiped them down or washed the windows. We aren't wine drinkers so we weren't in the area to tour wineries. We wanted to relax in a home, cook food and enjoy the view. The lake view is the best part. If we had any recommendations, it would be to clean up the outside of the property and spend some time weeding and pruning overgrown plants and weeds. The pictures in the listing appear that at one time it was cleaned up. The couch had dog hair on it from a previous stay. I am disappointed to spend almost 1400 for basically a lake view. It was our first time to the Finger Lakes and while the area overall is beautiful, we likely won't be returning.

I grew up locally, attending Binghamton University for my undergraduate degree and receiving my master's at nearby Keuka College. Why they chose this property

The photos don't show how cute this cottage is. It is extremely comfortable and secluded for being along Route 14. It is nicely appointed and you cannot beat the deck overlooking the water. Stop, relax and take it in.

What makes this property unique

A little bit of history on this property, this house was originally officer barracks at Sampson Air Force Base, located almost directly across the lake. The original owner of the property purchased four barracks when the base was closed after World War II and had them shipped around the lake and placed on this property and those adjacent. This is the only one in original form.
