HISTORY of our HOUSE This completely renovated Victorian with persian rugs and stained-glass windows was built in 1908 for the daughter of a man who invented better parts for a steamboat engine when the Mississippi was a hub of transport to bring Red Wing pottery to the entire country. Then it was cared for by an Air Force pilot who then went on to get a PhD at University of Minnesota in Agriculture. His thesis topic was "effective business models for small farms"! There is still an old barn|house on the acre property that served as a little red school house, then the fire house for the town, and now is in the process of also being restored.
WHY ARE THERE COTTAGE GARDENS? (part of your yard is a garden?) Given the history of early American and the Victorian era, we have worked to regenerate some of the land to have cottage gardens full of heirloom and heritage vegetables and flowers that are open pollinated. This was known as "cottage" gardening during the 1920-30s when people (including my grandmother) would grow vegetables and flowers in the yard.
the FUTURE In the next few years we are putting together an interactive tour that you can take during your stay so that learning about Victory Gardens, Heirlooms and Americans history with agriculture is fun and part of your stay! We look forward to this once the house is up and running and providing this type of living, historical legacy of American cottage gardens and heirloom seeds.
We hope you enjoy your stay at this beautiful Queen Anne Victorian we have lovingly cared for.

We had a fantastic time here. It accommodated 5 couples pretty easily. The downstairs bedroom needed some kind of door or privacy curtain. The location was perfect. We really enjoyed our stay.
We had a great time in Lake City. We had 6 adults and the house had plenty of room for everyone and was furnished with everything we needed. We would definitely stay here again.
Enjoyed our stay, great bedrooms upstairs, awesome family friendly social main floor! Great yard and seating outside! Loved the close walk to the lake front!

Great place! Even our younger grandchildren were in awe of such a beautiful home! The backyard is so large, the kids could burn off energy while the old folks sat by the fire and enjoyed the time together. We are already planning on a 2026 visit to Lake City and will look to staying at this location again!

Thank you! We so enjoyed your family staying at our home and look forward to your return!
The house is very large with great bedrooms! The air conditioning works very well. There was plenty of room for 11 of us, including 3 bathrooms. My grandchildren loved running around and exploring the house. It was very close to the boutiques and the beach. We would definitely reserve this property again!
Beautiful house! Loved all of the beautiful touches throughout the house. Our family were comfortable and enjoyed our time there. The grandkids loved the back staircase. We appreciated the stocked kitchen and large fridge

Thank you so much! Very happy to hear you enjoyed your stay. :)
We had a group of 10 family members stay here for a four day weekend and had a great time. The house is very charming with lots of rooms so everybody had their own space. The backyard is very large with lots of activities. The kitchen had everything you needed to cook for large family meals. The location is convenient to walk to the lake or downtown. Plenty of parking for lots of cars.

Thank you so much! We so enjoyed your family staying here and the fact that families can get together and enjoy their time together makes me really happy!
The outdoor patios and firepit arrangements were very nice. We did s’mores one night and roasting sticks were provided. Kitchen was well stocked. The A/C was nice because each bedroom had a unit and the downstairs stayed nicely cool also. Indoor and outdoor games were available.

Thank you so much! Your group was really a joy to host.
Lovely home, plenty of sleeping options for 7, living room area provided spots for all to sit, ample towels, easy driving to things to do. We grannies really enjoyed our stay!
We loved the home! The kitchen was fully stocked with whatever utensils we needed. Being able to walk to downtown was a plus for us. The bedrooms were spacious. We also enjoy the different sitting areas outside.
We lucked out with amazing weather.
We booked for a girls weekend and had the best time! The house was large and charming! So much space and sleeping arrangements! The small town is perfect and absolutely so friendly! There is a lot to do - including water activities! The Johnny Appleseed festival was also a perk during our weekend! We had the best time and would recommend!!
We really enjoyed our stay and greatly appreciated all the wonderful spaces inside and out! The home is beautifully decorated. The bedrooms including the beds were very comfortable. The 2 1/2 baths were very nice to have with our large group. It was a short walk to the lake where we walked along the lake trail to downtown. We spent a lot of time gathered together on the large outdoor porch and around the fire pit. The kids had fun playing corn hole and basketball. We didn’t get to see the gardens in full bloom due to the timing of our visit but can only image how beautiful they must be! If we visit again we will stay here!

Thank you to you so much! We look forward to your return if you pass by this way again!
We loved the house and especially liked the cooling(split units) in each of the bedrooms. Property owner was very good with communication.
Might be nice to have an outside picnic table to be able to eat outside. Kitchen was nice and mostly stocked(could maybe use measuring cups/spoons.

Beautiful home provided comfort at a difficult time
My father recently passed away and we were able to book this large but cozy home for the weekend of his funeral. Between my family and my sister's family, we had 10 adults and it worked out well, with adult kids sleeping in bunks, etc. It was so much nicer than a cold hotel room and the home provided gathering space where we could all sit comfortably and share memories. The rooms were tastefully decorated, and the kitchen was complete with a full assortment of dishes, cookware, spices, and a few other basics. Owner was very responsive. We came and went as if it were our own place. Plenty of parking. This amazing home made our difficult weekend easier.

It was so lovely to have your family stay at our home even though it was a sad occasion. I am very happy it made your difficult weekend easier and comfortable.
Thank you so much for the wonderful stay. The home and herb/flower gardens were so beautiful, and we felt right at home. One of our favorite features of the home is that there were plenty of comfy seating areas inside as well as outside on the front and back porches, in the yard etc. Watching the birds over morning coffee sitting on the front porch was a wonderful way to spend the morning. The location was perfect for our needs. It is walking distance from the lake walkway, and just a few minutes from the nearest grocery store. We also went for a hike at nearby Maiden's Bluff and visited Niagara Cave.We prepared most of our own meals instead of eating out, so we greatly appreciated the spacious, well-appointed kitchen with plenty of counter space for food prep and clearly labeled cabinets making everything easy to find. Beds were also super comfy and we had no problem getting a good night's sleep. Finally, the hosts were extremely responsive in answering our questions and negotiating an early checkin. This was a perfect stay--thanks again!!

About the host
Hosted by Jennifer
I grew up in Minnesota in an old Victorian house, and through the years I have wanted to take a moment in my life to work on another Victorian house like I did as a kid.
Why they chose this property
Lake Pepin is an area of legends from the first Native Tribes to Laura Ingalls Wilder. It is also the most dramatic of landscapes and high geological interest in Minnesota. That seems super interesting.
What makes this property unique
This old house has so many interesting details and a lot of land and is near the water. The house is interesting for it's history, the old-growth wood throughout the home, and how much comfort and quietness it gives in a really busy world.
