About this property

19th Century Manor House Set in a Working Organic Vineyard

The view from the Clos des Capucins manor is exceptional. Situated on the top of a hill, it looks directly across to the legendary Chinon Castle where King Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their son Richard the Lionheart once resided.
The castle later became the setting for the historic meeting of Joan of Arc and the French Dauphin. Here she persuaded him to provide her with troops to rid France of the English and end the 100-Year War.
The manor is surrounded by gardens and a walled vineyard. The new owner, Fiona Beeston, wine journalist and author, is injecting new life (bio-dynamic) into this forgotten gem of a vineyard, first established by the Capucins monks in 1604.
The monastery was burnt down during the French Revolution. The house that now stands on the site is part 18th/part 19th Century. Recently redecorated, it has a warm family-house feel, perfect for family gatherints. Views from every window are exquisite, some straight out of a XVIIth painting - lush countryside with the meandering river, vineyards, chateaux....
A five minutes' walk from the Clos des Capucins will take you down a cobbled street lined with medieval to Renaissance buildings leading to the main square with a fountain and cafés, wine bars.
The manor is halfway up the hill above the town. Look east from your sloping lawn to Chinon's rooftops and castle, south to the meandering river… Inside the manor are well-proportioned, light-flooded rooms spread over two floors, plus two bedrooms up in the attic, linked by a central curved wooden staircase. There's a panelled dining room with built-in corner cupboards guarding smart dinner services and glass, a sitting room with a parlour feel, a wonderful sounding piano , a fireplace for cosy nights in the winter, a small library well stocked, a den-like room for reading and writing, and a big farmhouse kitchen with a modern gas-fired range, and a wood stove for the winter. All is freshl y painted to a high standard and unfussily furnished with good fabrics and furniture. The biodynamic vineyard lies behind, historic Chinon lies below, there is swimming and kayaking in the river, cycle roots abound and most of the main Loire châteaux within easy distance.

Superb!
Unbelievably perfect vacation! Fiona was a wonderful hostess and made sure we were versed in the many fantastic places in Chinon. The chateau was comfortable and homey and had everything we needed to prepare dinners for our large family. We were so sad to leave!

Truly beautiful, historical manor for memorable family gathering
Our stay at that manor was phenomenal - the house was exactly as described - beautiful, spacious, comfortable, with a lots of character, history and breathtaking views, and located close to town (walkable). Fiona was an excellent host and reached out several times to make sure we have all we need. We look forward to coming back in the near future! Thanks again Fiona for a memorable stay.

Perfect House and Host
Our family of 6 spent a week in Chinon and couldn't have been happier with the manor house and its setting. The view from the front yard is spectacular with the medieval castle, town, and its river creating an unforgettable scene. Add to this, the beautifully furnished home with lovely spacious rooms, rustic charm, and historical ambiance, and we had all the ingredients for a modern stay that left us longing for more of an era gone by! Fiona was the perfect host, providing us with warm hospitality and an up-close look (and taste) at her life as a winemaker. We can't wait to return!

A beautiful, comfortable house set in idyllic surroundings!
We thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay at Clos des Capucins. The accommodation was excellent, the view spectacular, and we never tired of sitting in the garden overlooking Chinon and the river. There are many interesting places to visit in the area when you can manage to leave charming Chinon for a short while. Our hostess was so welcoming and delightful, and hosted us to an excellent wine-tasting of her own vintage, of which she is justly proud. We were treated generously in every way, and made to feel not just as guests, but as valued friends. A memorable holiday!

A wonderful experience in every way imaginable
You will not make a mistake by staying at Clos De Capucins. This is a place I will never forget. If you love food, wine, architecture, a charming town, amazing views and a quiet venue to relax you will love this chateau. Fiona is the owner/wine maker. She's incredible. Her charm and welcoming spirit is absolutely genuine. She loves her wine and has a unique passion for life. She barrel tasted with her and enjoyed spending time talking about the process of making her wine. We loved waking up with a cup of coffee, walking in the front yard to be greeted by the rooster and hens, the caves below the house, the a fantastic view of Chinon. It's truly breath taking. We can't wait to go back. Thank you Fiona!

About the host

Host profile image
I am an organic British winemaker. 2011 was my very first vintage and the wine is still ageing in the oak barrels in the domaine's cellars.

I first came to France in the 70's for my love of wine and haven't left it since. I used to be a wine critic and published a book 'The wine men' in 1989.

I spent 3 years searching for the perfect terroir in Chinon to make red wine (Cabernet-Franc) and found this spectacular property. The first wines to be made on this very spot date back to 1604.

Why they chose this property

I first bought the property for its vines, the unique terroir and amazing view.
It happened to have a Manor House in desperate need of attention. I spent 2 years refurbishing it with a decorator specialised in Chateaux in the Loire Valley.

What makes this property unique

The astonishing view is quite simply unique.
The walled vineyard is only a few minutes walk or drive from the town center.
You will be surrounded by vines – a magical setting – a great introduction to the wine region (Chinon, Saumur, Bourgueil, etc.)
