A very quiet cabin, was great to travel with my dogs and family for a southern Illinois getaway-far enough out it’s quiet but not too far from town to make it isolated

Perfect Getaway

My husband and I along with our sweet great Pyrenees Zoey At the perfect little weekend getaway here! The cabin is adorable and very clean. We love sitting outside on the back deck and we were able to visit most of the wineries in the area. Recommend this place 10 out of 10.

Charming Cabin

We had such a relaxing stay at this cabin! It was in the perfect location for day hikes at Giant City and Ferne Clyffe, and even Garden of the gods was not too far of a drive. We were able to hike during the day, come back and wash away nature, go visit local wineries and still come back and enjoy the lovely view off the back deck and see the unobstructed stars. The cabin was clean, beautifully decorated, and had every amenity we needed. We both slept like rocks as the bed was super cozy! Check in and check out were extremely easy and Steve was just a text away if needed. We are already talking about coming back with our kids!

Great cabin, in the heart of everything

Great cabin. Clean comfortable spacious well stocked. One minor appliance wasn’t working, text to manager — and it was replaced before we got back from our day activities! Short drive to Garden of the Gods, lake, etc.

Cozy & A Perfect Way to Disconnect

My husband and I needed to disconnect from our busy lives. Coming down to the Shawnee area turned out to be the best choice, and this cabin played a large part in that! On the exterior, the cabin is well-seasoned now, showing a history of nature rightfully integrating into the wood. The interior is as cozy as it looks! It's an intimate space with excellent air circulation, fantastic water supply, and plenty of privacy. We came with our dog Mack, who's been lacking adventures lately ever since he was diagnosed with epilepsy. The road trip to this cabin was a big test for us, as we had never travelled this far with our dog before (6 hours). We're happy to report that the road trip was a success! Mack found the most comfort in the living room, where he had plenty of room on the floor to sprawl out and make rotations when he snoozed. We especially love the view behind the cabin - wide, open fields where we saw an abundance of life: cows far out in the pasture, deer grazing just beyond the property, birds-a-plenty (some we're not used to seeing), and even a healthy, large fox travelling across the property. The property owner, Steve, was an excellent host! He is sincere and so responsive. We appreciated the attention to detail as he messaged us when we first booked, and throughout our stay he was so quick to reply to any questions or updates we had. We will absolutely be back and can't wait to explore more of what this area has to offer!

Fantastic location with charm

The Tool Shed is a creatine remake of a house that is transformed into a double suite for couples or families with a common central area. Think queen bed, your own bathroom and your own sitting area with TV, then switched to a mirror image on the other side of the house for the second suite. Kitchen and common family room divide the two. Lovely deck and views. Ice appliances but the outdoor grill needs some serious maintenance. You are next door to another close house, but still have fairly complete privacy. The pictures are accurate and I cannot emphasize enough how clean this property is. The host is very responsive and fun. Highly recommend!

Beautiful and relaxing

I love the layout and the view. Great for two couples. There is a sulfur smell, probably from the well water, and the place could have used a sweet and dusting to get out cobwebs and dead bugs, but otherwise it was nice.

Fantastic Cabin in Southern IL

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had a wonderful stay at this charming cabin in southern Illinois! The property was spotless, well-equipped, and in a serene location—perfect for a relaxing getaway. The cozy interior and stunning outdoor views made our time here unforgettable. A special shoutout to Steve, the owner, who went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. His communication was prompt and friendly, and he provided excellent recommendations for local attractions and dining. Even after we left, Steve followed up to address suggestions we offered to improve the cabin, showing how much he genuinely cares about his guests' experiences. The location couldn’t have been better—it is close to the Southern Illinois Wine Trail, which has 11 fantastic wineries and two amazing parks: Ferne Clyffe State Park and Giant City State Park. Both parks offer incredible hiking trails and breathtaking scenery, adding many adventures to our trip. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat with outstanding hospitality and plenty to explore nearby, this is the place to stay. We can’t wait to return and highly recommend it to anyone planning a getaway!

About the host

Host profile image
I grew up in Southern Illinois, and could not wait to 'Get Out,' 'Escape,' and go to the big city. I went to school in Chicago at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and left Southern Illinois far behind. I thought this was great.

I had a very successful career in the online advertising, marketing, and market research world catering to big pharma. In a normal year I would fly 125,000 miles and see many places, countries and sites.

As I grew older and my 'success' continued I felt more and more that something was missing. I began to yearn for the hills of Southern Illinois, the slower pace of life, and the people I left behind more and more.

I 2013, I came home for a few weeks to help my mother move my father into a nursing home. After this was completed I flew to Milan for business, and on my way back I received a call that my mother had had a stroke. This was a life changing event for me, and I never really went home.

My father spent the year getting worse, and my Mother spent the year getting better. When my father died in December of 2013, I decided to 'officially' move to Southern Illinois in order to spend more time with my mother and be closer with family. I also made the decision to leave the company I worked for and do something simpler, and local to Southern Illinois.

June 1st, 2014 I started my company with the goal to create vacation rental homes in Southern Illinois and help the area grow tourism. Southern Illinois is a beautiful and special place, and I would like to share it with as many people as possible.

Why they chose this property

This property was an old Bed and Breakfast, and the view was spectacular. The property was foreclosed on and a friend that I went to high school with had purchased it and remodeled the main house. Once I purchased it I started refurbishing the guesthouse. Now that it is completed I think it is one of the nicest properties on the wine trail.

The property will sleep a maximum of 16 people, or can be rented to separate parties in the main house and guesthouse.

What makes this property unique

The proximity to wineries, and area attractions is also great for this property.
