Beautiful setting with a lovely garden. The pool was immaculately kept by the Gardner. Some aspects regarding the property were not up to scratch. Initially no heating available and we shivered in the evening for three days, the sealant around the kitchen worktop was black, there was a dreadful smell from the soil pipe connecting the washing machine and the hot water was set at a dangerous level but these issues were addressed by the host after our conversation with her. However a very wonky chest of drawers remained so. One does not get a second chance to make an impression and small issues like the clock in the kitchen with a run down battery not working and the connection lever on the window in the bedroom hanging off, the plug stopper not attached to the sink and old black marks around the base of the shower show a lack of attention to detail and let the appeal of the property down.

Thank you for your feedback, Diane.
We’re pleased you enjoyed the beautiful setting, gardens and crystal clear pool, as well as the direct access into the vineyards, which many of our guests highly value and repeatedly come back to stay year after year to enjoy.
We are surprised by the tone and detail of your review. During your stay, all concerns raised were discussed at length as you went through your 'list' and addressed promptly, including adjustments to the hot water temperature to suit your personal temperature requirements and resolving the drainage issues. We are always responsive and attentive to guest needs in real time.
Some of the points mentioned relate to very minor or subjective details and it is disappointing that the focus appears to have been on actively seeking out faults rather than enjoying the overall beauty, experience and surroundings.
Cape Town does not have central heating infrastructure as standard - and we do advise guests who are sensitive to cooler evenings to put a jumper on, or consider visiting during the warmer summer months rather than at the start of winter.
We take great pride in maintaining our cottages and consistently receive excellent reviews across all platforms for cleanliness, comfort and hospitality. We do not feel this review fairly reflects the standard we provide or the experience of the vast majority of our guests.
We wish you well in your future travels in meeting all of the standards you require.
We loved our stay in Sunbird Cottage. Direct access to the vineyard was a real bonus and the swimming pool and garden area are really well maintained. Location is perfect for exploring - particularly the Constantia vineyards. The cottage is well maintained and decorated but retains original features. We would definitely return.
We’re Lucy and James, originally from the UK (Lucy) and Malta (James). What started as a two-year adventure to Cape Town in 2017 soon became a forever home, and today we’re happily raising our two boys in the beautiful Constantia Valley.
We fell in love with Cape Town for its sunshine, mountains, wine estates, and the relaxed lifestyle that makes every day feel special. You’ll often find us hiking local trails, exploring new restaurants, or simply enjoying a glass of wine at sunset while the children play in the garden.
Hosting our cottages allows us to share what we love most about this part of the world. We’ve designed each space to feel stylish yet homely, with all the comforts guests need to relax, explore, and feel at home. Whether you’re here for a short break or a long stay, our goal is to make your time as stress-free and memorable as possible.
We’re always happy to share tips on our favourite wine estates, scenic drives, or family-friendly activities, but we also know when to step back so guests can enjoy their stay in privacy. What we enjoy most about hosting is welcoming people from around the world and helping them discover why Constantia is such a special place to live.
Our hope is that you’ll leave not just rested, but with memories of vineyard walks, mountain sunsets, and the warm, welcoming spirit of Cape Town.
Why they chose this property
We chose Constantia because it offers a lifestyle that blends natural beauty, history, and convenience in a way that few places can. Nestled among vineyards and framed by dramatic mountains, it feels like a countryside retreat, yet it’s only 20 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre, the airport, and world-class beaches. It’s this rare balance of peace and accessibility that makes the neighborhood so special.
Constantia is the birthplace of South African wine, and Groot Constantia – the oldest and most historic wine estate – is right on our doorstep. We love being able to step out of the garden gate and wander through the vineyards, enjoy a tasting, or settle into a long, lazy lunch at one of the estate’s acclaimed restaurants. Beyond Groot Constantia, the valley is dotted with award-winning wineries, boutique shops, and fine-dining restaurants, making it a haven for food and wine lovers.
What we enjoy most about the neighborhood is the connection to nature. Mornings often begin with birdsong and mountain views, while afternoons might be spent hiking in the surrounding trails or strolling through Kirstenbosch Gardens. Evenings bring stunning sunsets over the valley, a reminder of why we fell in love with this place.
Constantia is also wonderfully family-friendly and safe, with a warm sense of community. It’s a place where you can truly slow down and enjoy life’s simple pleasures, yet still be close to everything Cape Town has to offer. For us, it’s the perfect mix – a picturesque valley steeped in history, surrounded by nature, and alive with culture and charm.
