About this property
Historic 2 Story Hand-Hewn Log Cabin Next to Yellowstone Park
Winner of the 2010 Historic Restoration Award from the Montana Historical Alliance , this rare 2 story hand-hewn square log cabin was built in 1907. Austrians used Broad Axes to fashion unbelievable 'compound' dovetail corners locking the logs in place for over 100 years. The address of the cabin is: 25 Papesh Road, Gardiner, Montana if you want to Google Map it's location. It is a short 5 MINUTE drive to the North Entrance of Yellowstone Park.
The cabin sits on 42 quiet acres once called 'The Little Trail Creek Ranch.' It once fed tourists in Yellowstone Park. It is only 4 miles north of Gardiner,Montana and the north entrance to Yellowstone. The cabin is not visible from the highway, and has lots of grass, trees and water. Out front sit the mountains of Yellowstone Park and the Yellowstone River. In the back is the Absaroka Wilderness. The old tree stumps that built the cabin are still visible up the cliffs behind the house.
Herds of Elk, Bison,Deer and Bighorn Sheep use our land all year due to the trees and open water from abundant springs.
We like to go to Yellowstone Hot Sptings, 2 miles away. Open 9-9 everyday except Monday. Chico Hot Springs is 22 miles north, and it has wonderful food. On Sunday, you can eat the brunch and swim for free.
For 13 years we fixed up the cabin. It was fun. There are all new appliances, a 6 burner stove with convection oven, new electric and plumbing, and heating. We used antiques and old wood salvaged from train stations and hotels where needed. The old wood in the cabin has a certain 'glow' that comes from age.
During the renovation, I found many items I put into the chinking. Pocket watches, coins, buttons, even a gun--and 3 bullets in the logs [all at waist high level].
There is a steam shower for use in winter. A 4000 pound Tulikivi wood stove [for use only in winter] uses radiant heat to warm the cabin. It is made of soapstone, which will stay warm a full 2 days after a fire.
There is one bedroom downstairs, and 3 upstairs. A double bed is in the sun room, and the couch downstairs in the Tulikivi room is oddly comfortable for sleeping. So, if you appreciate the Real Deal -- with history, wildlife, quiet and nature-- welcome to our cabin. You'll find our circle of trees cool and refreshing even on the hottest day. historic 1907 cabin near Gardiner** this served as our group's base camp for a trip to **Yellowstone**.The cabin has character and is well-preserved, and Provides an authentic Montana atmosphere that beats staying in Hotel. Provides easy access to the **North Entrance** and Lamar Valley, which is ideal for early-morning starts. We had several sightings of Elk and deer on the property. Would stay here again
We enjoyed our stay here so much! The views were amazing, and so much space for everyone. The cabin was so stunning, I would definitely stay here again.
Our stay was fantastic! We loved the location, the decor, and the coziness of the home. The owner went above and beyond to meet us and teach us how to use the fireplace and also gave us a tour and shared the history of the home. The house has everything you need and the beds are comfortable. The proximity to Gardiner, Yellowstone and Yellowstone hot springs is fantastic. The kids climbed the mountain behind the home every morning and loved the freedom and wilderness!
We loved staying here for our Yellowstone trip. It's in a great location with beautiful views. When we pulled up there was an entire herd of Elk in the front yard.
We really enjoyed the scenery! Yellowstone park was close for us to go in and visit!! Was just an enjoyable place to visit!! We had elk in our front yard and a bear climbing the mountains in the back!!
What a wonderful stay! The house is amazing, comfortable and stocked with essentials for your trip. Condiments, pantry items, shower essentials, ketchup, laundry soap and even towels for the hot springs nearby to avoid a rental fee. The hosts have put a lot of love into this place. So much character and lovely details. We also saw deer right out the window! Highly recommend for your Yellowstone adventure! Would love to return :)
Great location, house had everything needed, loved having the yard for the kids to play and explore. Owner, Alex was super nice and knowledgeable about the history of the home and area.
We stayed while visiting Yellowstone National Park. The location was very convenient and the cabin was perfect. Plenty of room, clean and comfortable. Our last night we watched an elk herd wander through the front yard!Highly recommended!
Our family of 7 had plenty of room to recoop after long days in the park. It was a very quiet area and the fans were adequate to cool the bedrooms at night.
We really enjoyed our stay. The cabin was thoughfully supplied with items that we appreciated. The owner left us a one page hand written letter welcoming us. There was a herd of elk right outside the cabin some mornings. Would recommend staying here to anyone. Picture is the view from the front of the cabin. Thank you!!
Amazing property conveniently located to everything you need. Let me also mention the owners they are the best owners I’ve dealt with by far. They kept us updated with things to do in the area. If you are on the fence about this place let me tell you it was totally worth it.
What a unique place with everything we needed and then some! We all thoroughly enjoyed staying here as a home base for visiting Yellowstone. The restored home was beautiful. Our extended family of 9(4 kids) made good use of the large kitchen & table. The kids loved making smores. There was beauty in the nature right outside & just a few minutes to Yellowstone. Highly recommend!!!

We enjoyed the fire pit but it would have been nice if the yard around the house and fire pit had been mown.
Awesome 100 yr old house that has been fantastically restored. Very close to Gardiner and North entrance to YNP. All the amenities you need, plus wildlife in the front yard. Highly recommend!

We enjoyed your stay at the property. The owners where very helpful with us changing our reservations and the communication was amazing. We will book this location in the future.
We are enjoyed our visit very much, the cabin was full of history that we enjoyed. We found the price to be very reasonable, compared with other properties.
The historic cabin is just that historic. The restoration done by Alex and Beth is simply stunning. The location is 5 minutes from Gardiner, and along the float from McConnel to Joe Brown access sites on the Yellowstone River. The location is just perfect. The cabin is well stocked on all fronts and makes an extended effortless. We stayed for 17 nights and look forward to our next visit.Brant

I am 73 we have an 30 year old daughter in New Zealand. My wife is a nurse practitioner. I like to work on old things, fix them up. It helps me go to sleep at night, thinking about the next project.
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with the area during my first job in the park 40 years ago. My wife and I met there 2 years later, and married after a 3 month romance. For 13 years we worked to bring this cabin back. I hope you can see the effort in the pictures provided.
What makes this property unique
We have, lots of wildlife including Bighorn sheep, Elk, and the occasional Wolf or Bear. We like hiking, cross country skiing in winter, and always going to the hot springs. You really get the Big Sky feeling at our place. Best Hot Springs in all of North America.
