Located precisely between Newberry College and the Newberry Opera house, the Johnstone-Rutherford Cottage places you within a 10 minute walk or less of either the main college campus or the opera house.
The cottage is part of the Johnstone-Rutherford House complex built by the renowned builder Cam Davis, known for his historic homes here in Newberry and his work at the Biltmore Mansion in Asheville, NC. The cottage has been updated providing historic charm (it roughly 100 years old) with a touch of modern conveniences.
Enjoy a large bedroom with a king size bed and a spacious living room for relaxing between activities in historic Newberry and Newberry College. The cottage also provides a full kitchen and washer/dryer for your convenience.
Tv and internet are provided in both main rooms. The kitchen has a full array of cooking elements for your use.
Both rooms in the cottage have individual air conditioning (not window units, but wall units close to the ceiling, European ductless style). Additionally, each room has a natural gas wall unit should you need heat. Set these to suit your comfort level. The bathroom provides a pace heater as well.
There is an electric blanket (winter only) for the king size bed should you choose to use it.
Hiding under the carpet were old wood floors as you would expect. We love them. And under the ceiling tile, old wood ceilings.
Please be aware that the ‘crib’ is actually a pack-n-play and is typically available and in the bedroom closet. However, if you need it please make us aware so that we can make sure the unit is in the cottage. Guest access Guest have the entire cottage to themselves. The cottage is surrounded by a white picket fence and sits directly across the Newberry College Teaching/Education facility. Other things to note Don and Laura live in the Johnstone-Rutherford home adjacent to the cottage. This home is being restored to its original beauty. It will soon be a painted lady! Perhaps the first full painted lady in Newberry.

Everything was great. This is a great little cottage. It’s our 2nd time there and we love it that much more each time.

Thanks so much! Hope to have the front porch redone and the cobblestone kitchen walkway in before your next trip. We are booked pretty solid through April so grab dates when you know when they are. See you soon!
Loved this property it wa way more than we expected once inside Ample space for 2, clean and quiet Property owners made the check in process easyWould stay again
We had a wonderful weekend in Newberry. The cottage was perfect. We will definitely be back and hopefully be able to stay there again! The communication from the owner was great as well! Thank you for such a great place!!!
We had a lovely stay at this beautiful cottage. It was comfortable, quiet with lots of little touches for a relaxing getaway. The location was great, just a short walk to downtown Newberry. The full kitchen was well-stocked and had everything we needed. The space was very clean and communication with the friendly, helpful and welcoming owner was excellent throughout. Highly recommend and we hope to return!
We went to Newberry for a concert in the downtown opera house. There was a chain hotel right across the street from the venue but why would you want to stay in a small one bedroom hotel room with poor lighting. Instead you could stay in a comfortable cottage with a large bedroom, separate living room, and a well equipped kitchen that includes a full washer and dryer. The cottage is within a short walking distance of the downtown which has some nice shops and some very good restaurants. The cottage is an older building with charm and is well maintained. Should we return to Newberry, we would definitely stay here again.

Thanks so much. Look forward to having y’all again sometime. And thanks for touching base via text. Greatly appreciate it! Blessings!
We came to attend a nearby event. It was only a 4-minute drive from the house. Impressed with how large the rooms were. The full kitchen was also impressive.
This property has cozy historic vintage cottage vibes inside and out. The rooms were spacious, well-decorated, with high ceilings and lots of natural light from windows (and light-blocking curtains for sleeping.) The kitchen was well-stocked with appliances and basics like coffee, tea, salt, sugar, and snacks. The home is within walking distance of cute downtown Newberry. The host was easy to get ahold of for check-in, check-out, and parking information. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend.
The house was quite old. Had trouble getting the temperature comfortable. Kitchen spigot did not operate smoothly. Owner was responsive to our problem with the shower.

Yes indeed, 100 year old cottages are indeed quite old. Sorry it did meet your expectations for an old cottage. Folks who stay here are typically looking for old charm. Best to you in your future bike adventures!
Quaint and great location. We would suggest more focus on functional aspects over decorative ones. No empty dresser. Needs closet light switch. Washer and dryer were great. Could use a grab bar in the shower. The critters in the attic were quite active this morning. Several of the windows had cracked panes. That being said, we enjoyed our stay.

Thanks for the excellent feedback. We did have the attic checked and have asked subsequent guests if they have heard any noise in the attic. To date, and we book almost every night, and it has been two weeks, no one has heard a thing.
Bar is a great idea. I will look into that. Cottage is quite old and electricity to the closet is a modern addition. I suppose one of these days we should consider that. No one has mentioned that before.
The upper drawers are usually empty. Sounds like cleaners may have put extra linens and such in those drawers. Sorry about that.
Thanks again for the feedback. Always helpful to hear from guests.
It feels historical, solid, wood floors, high ceilings, cozy. A one bedroom one bath cottage close to everything. Comfy king bed, soft linens. Kitchen fully stocked with supplies. Living room has plenty of seating. TV in both living room and bedroom if you want. You can walk anywhere. It was raining, so we drove. Free parking all over town. Easy walk to college- practically on campus. But quiet. Very. Slept well. Owners live in the big house in property behind. Warm greeting and we were happy to find fresh milk in the fridge for morning coffee. Thank you!! Bring your own for the big pot or use the Kuerig. They have both. We will stay there when we return for another concert at the Newberry Opera House.
