About this property

Modern family villa with large swimming pool, covered terrace and huge sea views

This stunningly designed villa, built in 2009, is situated in peaceful olive groves in the coastal resort of Specchiolla on the outskirts of Carovigno, and in easy reach of shops and restaurants. It is 20 minutes drive from Brindisi airport and 10 minutes from the beach and offers a fabulously different Italian holiday experience. The villa has an elevated outlook to the Adriatic sea with beautiful arched stone terraces and steps leading down to the pool which is surrounded by a ceramic tiled patio area. It has three double bedrooms, with king sized beds + en suites in two, and twin single beds in the other bedroom + separate bathroom. The air-conditioned & centrally heated villa has an open plan fully equipped modern fitted kitchen, dining room and lounge. The villa is set in 1.2 acres of olive groves, with figs and almond trees in a quiet rural area. A dry stone wall and fencing surround the property which also has an extensive roof terrace, where views overlooking the property are amazing. Our agent, Antonio, lives close by and is there to provide you with help and advise on many aspects of your holiday. So if you have problems or need help, please call him.

This area has such a lovely temperate climate that holidays at any time of the year are great. The temperature is mild compared with the cold British winters, and it is often possible to be sitting on the terrace enjoying breakfast in the winter, so makes an ideal early spring or late autumn break.

The early arrival of spring in March is also a wonderful time to visit. The olive groves are smothered in gorgeous yellow spring flowers, with grape hyacinths, and lilac coloured cyclamens growing wild and profusely and blossom on the almond trees that smells heavenly! Although the pool is not open until mid- May, there are wonderful beach and country walks to take and enjoy the sunny weather. It's a great place at any time of the year and can be a wonderful de-stressing break! There are so many interesting towns to visit and great places to eat,. The history of this region is extremely varied and intriguing due to the many invasions from other nations and their differing life styles. You could learn a lot by exploring the towns and villages in this lovely part of Italy, in temperatures that are very pleasant out of season and when you get to know the Italian people they make you feel very welcome indeed.

About the host

My husband and I have loved Italy all our lives and when the opportunity came up we looked for a property that we would love to own in this country. Puglia was an untried area for us, so we took a trip with my husbands sister and her partner to explore this part of Italy. What we discovered was a lovely rural countyside, with a gentler pace of life and warm and generous people. After looking at several properties we were taken to this lovely site by a good agent, who we now happily call a friend! We fell in love with it and decided to have our villa built as close to our specification as the laws in Italy allow.. Since embarking on this adventure I have retired from my busy job as the Head of a Procurement Department in the NHS and am now catching up on millions of tasks at home that have waited too long! My most favourite past-time is painting. I studied art at the Cambridge School of Art for 4 years and have taught Calligraphy at the West Suffolk College since 1990. Now most of my paintings are of Italy! My husband retired in 2016 and now we both but look forward to our trips to the villa in spring and autumn. We manage two trips each year but spend most our our time doing the garden or working in the villa to make it more attractive and comfortable for us and our guests. We manage the bookings ourselves but have employed an Italian couple who live close by the villa to organise the cleaning, gardening, pool and maintenance and the welcoming for our guests.

Why they chose this property

Because the plot has wonderful elevated views of the sea, it is quiet, and in a rural location and the prettiness of its position among the olive trees, captivated us. In the spring the ground under the trees is covered with wonderful wild flowers and the sound of bird song fills the air. It is truly a magical place.
We also designed the villa to our own specifications within the rules and regulations of Italian law, so it is ideal for a family to stay in. Many of our guests have said they prefer to stay in the villa instead of going to the beach as the pool is great, and the surroundings are extremely relaxing.
We began planting our cacti garden in 2015 which we positioned down the steep bank on the right hand side of the pool which is fenced off by the edge of the pool patio. It was hard work digging and planting on the slope as we struggled to stop ourselves sliding down but with the aid of some large rocks placed strategically down the slope by our agent Antonio, we managed to plant a number of interesting and colourful specimens. Some of the rocks were flat so that they can be used as stepping stones making it easier to weed the plot.It seems to be flourishing and we will add to it every year until it is complete. We hope you will enjoy it.

What makes this property unique

It is very close to Brindisi Airport, just 20 minutes drive away and also only about an hour away from Bari Airport. It is close to the beach and to many nice coastal restaurants; it has lots of historically interesting towns. The most captivating sight are the many little trulli's that pepper the countryside. These little dwellings are now incorporated into many homes owned by Italians and other nationalities who love this part of Italy.
We love the tranquility of the area, its unique beauty has enthralled us, along with the lovely weather and the friendly people.
You can't fail to love it once you have visited it!
