About this property

Bugsy’s Hideout | Intrigue |Romance | Historic

The Cottage is a former Bugsy Siegel hunting cabin, nestled in the trees on a 14,000 sf lot. The style is modern/rustic with lots of light & high ceilings. Everything has been upgraded in this renovated 1926 cottage. Secluded & minutes from the famous Tudor House, the gathering spot of Bugsy & his gang in the days of prohibition.

The “Hideout” is a former Bugsy Siegel hunting cabin, nestled in the trees on a 14,000 sf lot. The style is modern/rustic with lots of light & high ceilings. Everything has been upgraded in this renovated 1926 cottage. Secluded & minutes from the famous Tudor House, the gathering spot of Bugsy & his gang in the days of prohibition. If you would like to take the Bugsy Challenge, you will be given 3 clues that will lead you to the secret location of the safe containing the long-lost “goods” that Bugsy left behind. Your reward is receiving 40% off your next stay at one of our unique properties.

The Cottage provides an experience not to forget with a cozy fireplace, a large Smart TV, & a full kitchen (the oven is a countertop convection oven). It is set up as a studio with a very comfy queen bed tucked away in its own nook with a privacy screen. There is another sleeping area upstairs in the loft & it is an open loft with a ladder for access. It was designed this way to keep it open & airy. Note: We have gotten feedback that it may be a little tight for 4 adults, & we have made a few modifications to create more space & at the same time have gotten very positive feedback for couples with kids.

The 2nd part of the property with a separate entrance in the back is at times rented separately. There are no shared walls as the storage area & closet sit between the two spaces.

Lake Arrowhead is in the mountains at about 5,500 feet. The main highlight is the change of seasons & clean crisp air. The temperature in the summer is approximately 15 degrees cooler than other areas at lower altitudes. In the winter, there is snow. It is incredibly beautiful & peaceful with lots of trees. It is more of a small-town feel with narrow roads in the Villas where the cottage is located.

The Village at Lake Arrowhead sits on the lake. There are shops & restaurants at the Village & the Arrowhead Resort & Spa is close by. The Tudor house is nearby & if you search around you can read more about Bugsy`s former gathering place where there is entertainment weekly & they have an excellent brunch.

About the Area:

Lake Arrowhead, Lake Gregory, & Big Bear Lake are recreational lakes in the Southern California San Bernardino mountains. They offer fresh crisp air, cooler weather (10-15 degrees) in the summer, & snow in the winter. They also offer a more relaxed & low-key energy “vibe” making them ideal locations for getaways to renew the mind, spirit, & body & to reconnect with family & friends.

We answer frequent questions regarding the lakes & have put together some information below on what makes each location unique so it is easier to match with your specific goals for your time away. Upon booking one of our properties, you will receive more detailed information on how you can spend your time in the area.

Big Bear Lake is a public lake & friendly to all types of boats & water sports & is the largest lake of the three. There is a short paved bike & walking trail that goes along the lake. Big Bear is a City & is more populated with stores, restaurants, & nightlife than the other two locations. It has more of a “desert” feel in terms of its topography. Big Bear is 26 miles up the mountain from Lake Arrowhead, Although none of our properties are in Big Bear, we recommend it for a day trip.

Lake Arrowhead is a private lake & is accessible to guests staying at properties with lake rights if the owners have permitted guests to use their ALA (Arrowhead Lake Association) passes. If this is the case, the Amenity “lake access” will be checked on the listing. In our list of properties, the Gingerbread Cottage is providing lake access. With lake access, specifically, the lake trail is accessible. There is a $10 per person per day fee that is required to be paid to receive a wristband for access. More information can be found on the ALA website. Swimming is allowed from the lake trail at any location except the beach clubs (these are restricted to owners). There is no ability to launch boats or SUPs on the lake. The Village is lakefront & is the main area for shops & restaurants & has a fitness center as well. The Queen boat is a tour boat on Lake Arrowhead that provides much of the history of the town - tickets can be purchased at the shop by the lake. There is a local company that offers water skiing lessons boat tours & rentals. This area has more of a small town & alpine feel to it. The Villas area (south side of the lake) in Lake Arrowhead is cooler & gets more snow that lasts longer than the north side of the lake which gets more sun in the winter & is hotter in temperature in the summer. The Villas area is an older area with older homes & narrower streets. The Tudor House is an event center offering Sunday brunch & a variety of events. Skypark is a local attraction as well as Snow Valley for skiing for both Lake Arrowhead & Lake Gregory. Lake Arrowhead is 15 minutes up the mountain from Lake Gregory.

Lake Gregory is a public lake in the town of Crestline, a small town about 20 minutes from the base of the mountain of San Bernardino. It is the closest mountain town to events & locations “down the hill”. In the past few years, the lake operations have become privately managed with significant improvements being done at the lake including the development of a water park, beach improvements, & boat, kayak, & canoe rentals. There is a fee to access the beach area & the water park & no fee to access the 2 1/2 mile trail around the lake. Fishing is allowed & more info can be found on the Lake Gregory website. Crestline has a small-town alpine feel with the lake nestled amongst the tall trees. Crestline gets less snow than the other 2 lake locations. The quaint town has restaurants, coffee shops, & thrift stores.

Twin Peaks/Blue Jay sits in between Crestline & Lake Arrowhead & is convenient to both lakes. It has its restaurants, shops, & thrift stores. It is famous for its outdoor farmer’s market on Thursday afternoons (seasonal).
We have an age minimum of 23 for adults staying with us.

The 2nd queen bed is in the loft accessed by a secured ladder. The loft is open to the living room downstairs and the other sleeping space.

In winter months if there is snow, parking may be limited to one car.

For 28+ nights stay, please contact us before booking. The refundable damage deposit is $100. We will provide bi-weekly cleaning at the price quoted, or there is an option to self-clean with a refundable cleaning deposit of $350. The longer-term cleaning fee is $225. The difference between this fee and the initial cleaning fee paid upon booking will be collected along with the deposits before check-in.

A 45-day cancellation policy applies when canceling or shortening your long-term stay.

Immediately after booking you will receive our short rental agreement to review and accept.

A BBQ is provided at the house, however, please be aware that we do not refill propane. We will reimburse you if you need to fill the propane. If you will arrive late, local stores may be closed or if it`s a holiday may run out of propane so it is advised to bring your own propane tank. if you plan to use the BBQ on the day of arrival.

For your convenience in cleaning up any messes or spills we provide handiwipes and bar rags as an eco-friendly alternative to paper towels. We also provide Swedish dish cloths instead of sponges. There is a sign in the house explaining the benefits, however if you prefer paper towels or sponges during your stay feel free to bring them. We want to prepare you the best we can for an exceptional stay with us.

The Hideaway

Quiet neighborhood, not far from family. Would be nice to have a small step stool to reach some items in cabinets. Might suggest bringing a shower cap. Would stay again.

What a lovely place!

We spent two nights at the Bugsy Cottage and absolutely loved it. The owners did a great job renovating this tiny house. It is clean and cozy and updated and for being so tiny it still had everything we needed. The murphy bed was really comfy. It was a quick drive to the lake and the village. We also got in a few hours of skiing at Big Bear. The location of this cottage is fabulous. The owners were very kind and easy to work with. We hope to be back!

Safety and code violations

We killed 4 spiders, Loft had no railing Per code needs to have a min of a 42 in high railing, Ladder was built with 2x4's Min Tred depth needs to be 5 inches, the light fixture in the bathroom had exposed wire (fire hazard) the loft did not have an egress window in case of an emergency, we did not feel safe and the property owner would not refund the last two night. We left after the 1st night.

Charles, we are sorry that you decided to leave. If we would have known that you are having an issue, we are here to help. As discussed with you in our messages, we did not know about the spiders until after you left the house. We have never had this come up with any other guest. We also did not know that you planned on leaving because you were not comfortable in the loft. We wish we would have known - we would have offered you another property to assist you. The listing is clear about the loft being an open space. It is not considered a bedroom and is completely optional to use as needed or not. I am sorry that we weren’t contacted and were unable to help you have a more enjoyable experience.

Delightful stay in a safe environment

This adorable little cabin had everything we needed- plus. Appreciated commitment by owner/ staff to do all they could to provide a safe environment. Traveling during COVID can be scary- and these folks had a plan in place to address. We grilled some awesome birthday steaks here! :-)

Winter Getaway

We went up looking for a quiet getaway and to get the sense of being in the mountains and this did not disappoint. The cabin is surrounded by large trees in a cute neighborhood that was great for taking our dog on walks and breathing the fresh air. The cabin itself was warm and cozy with all the amenities you need to still feel at home. From the personalized greeting written to us upon arrival to the doggy blankets they provided that my dog curled up in at night we felt welcomed and at home. My wife and I enjoy the close proximity to the hiking trails and shopping in downtown lake Arrowhead which is just a short drive away. We look forward to coming back to Lake Arrowhead and will definitely be booking the Bugsy Cabin when we do.

False advertising of cottage. Horrible experience!

This is what I replied to email from owner: Good afternoon, I am going to be very honest that our stay was HORRIBLE!!! First off, you guys falsely advertise what that "cottage" actually is. The pictures that you display look nothing like what the cabin is. It DOES NOT fit four people. You advertise 1 bedroom, and theres not. Its a SMALL studio w a loft. SMALL is an understatement!!! We could barely move in there, and the murphy and loft beds were sooooooo uncomfortable. Nobody got to sleep well at all. My son had to sleep on kitchen floor cuz no room!!. It was the worst location and experience we ever had!! We had no time to get ready for the wedding, cuz we drove around forever looking for it...only to find out we passed it NUMEROUS times cuz your truck was blocking the cottage and ADDRESS!! Then, you werent even nice about it. I will definitely NOT give a good review. We couldve stayed in a hotel room that my dad stayed in that was MUCH bigger and better, and he paid less than I did. Im sorry, but this was a rip off, and you should really be ashamed for scamming ppl into paying that much for something not worth it. What is advertised on the VRBO is NOT what the cottage looks like at all! It looked like an outdoor shed that maybe 2 ppl could move around in. Sorry, but this was my first exp w VRBO and it was horrible!!!

I'm sorry that you weren't comfortable with the Cottage. I went back to check the listing because I was concerned with this feedback. I'm not sure where the confusion came from on the size and layout of the Cottage. The first item in the description is the square footage of 350 sf. There is no way to list 0 sleeping spaces so we listed "Bedroom 1" for both the loft and the main floor bed so that it's clear there is no wall in between. We appreciate your thoughts on the bed comfort - everyone is different. This is the first time we've gotten any negative feedback on the comfort level of the beds. I went back to other reviews and comments are very complimentary. I'm providing just a few recent ones below and this is not to say that this review is not valid, it just is not what we have been hearing from other guests. The Murphy bed is a high end brand called Breda Beds out of Canada and it's actually more comfortable than the bed we have at home! (although this is very subjective). I would like to understand more details on what exactly was not comfortable since this is something new for us that we are hearing and we want everyone to be happy. "They really used the square footage of the cottage very well. We never felt cramped. The Murphy Bed was very comfortable. This place also had a loft with an extra bed that we thought was very neat" "Tiny house living with all the amenities The property did not disappoint. To access the murphy bed was easy. Would love to know where you bought the sofa and murphy bed very comfortable." I could tell when you called me and could not find the house that you were very stressed. It can be confusing due to the fact that there is a West Victoria Court and an East Victoria Court and GPS directions can be sketchy in the mountains. I'm not sure what else we could have done to help you find it other than to respond when you called to let you know you were on East Victoria Court instead of West Victoria Court. There were cars parked on the street but honestly it was not my truck, there was work going on in the house next door and because the house sits lower off the street it can be difficult to see it passing by. I am going to update the Welcome Info to try to make the directions more clear. I went out in the street to help you find the house and could tell you were late for your event and didn't want to cause any further delay - in hindsight I can see how that might have been interpreted as not being nice.

Quick Stay

The cabin is small but well laid out; with a fully appointed kitchen (a big plus). Our visit was just a quick overnight stay for a wedding, therefore we really did not have the opportunity to enjoy the property fully. Beware the streets are not clearly marked, very narrow and steep. Not for the novice or the old .... ;)

The property was cute. Smaller than it appeared in the photo, but that was fine as it was just two of us. Really disappointed with the owner. Said she was available and then wouldn’t respond. Asked for a 5 start review and wasn’t very helpful. Didn’t go out of her way to make the experience better. Wanted to charge $20 per extra hour if we wanted to check in early or late. $35 if we didn’t notify her. $10 if you get make up on a towel. It’s been a week and I still haven’t gotten back my deposit.

Tiny house living with all the amenities

The property did not dissappoint. To access the murphy bed was easy. Would love to know where you bought the sofa and murphy bed very comforable. The kitchen had lots of room and items for cooking (toaster ovens great). I do wish there was some " K cup coffee pods" to use in the Keurig, as I must have misunderstood when I asked about a "coffee pot" I brought ground coffee and there was not the adapter. Thx

Not at all as represented in the photo

There was no lake pass as was represented. I hope we don’t get penalized for it not being there. Couldn’t get ahold of the owner because her mailbox was full. Closely packed cabins so we couldn’t walk the dog. Only one wine glass! We ended up not staying the night.

I’m sorry to hear this. It sounds like a lack of proper communications. The prior guest took the lake pass home with them by mistake and had to mail it back. Had we known In this case we would have given out the code directly, the card itself is not required for lake access. I am the owner but I’m not the phone contact. We have specific communications protocols. We have an on site house manager, Kim and she is supposed to be contacted with urgent issues if there is a question that hasn’t been answered by messaging over Homeaway. I did not receive any messages by email or text and she did not receive a call. We’ve had dozens of guests with dogs and we have one ourselves and we’ve never heard of any issues walking dogs in the neighborhood. We appreciate knowing we need more wine glasses so thank you for letting us know. I’m sure Kim would have brought them to you had she known you needed more. I really wish we could’ve been able to respond. We will make sure that our Welcome information is more clear on how to contact us in the event these things might come up again. We want you to have the best experience during your stay and I’m sorry we seem to have fallen short this time.

Cute and tiny.

We had our grandchildren come to visit with their parents. That totaled 6 adults and 7 grandkids. We did not have an oven outside of the toaster oven provided and we had hauled up the mountain a 12 lb. standing rib roast for my birthday dinner with the family. Never fear, we purchased a turkey roaster at the local hardware store and all enjoyed a beautiful roast with all the sides and birthday cake picnic style on the living room floor. The snow arrived in time for the children to play outside most of the day. They all enjoyed the tiny cabin and the close quarters that inspired conversation and ingenuity. The grandkids loved “cracking” the safe and discovering treasure.

My wife and I came here for our anniversary weekend and we had a wonderful time at this cottage! It was very cozy and the heater warmed the place up very quickly. They really used the square footage of the cottage very well. We never felt cramped. The Murphy Bed was very comfortable. This place also had a loft with an extra bed that we thought was very neat. All the amenities worked well and suited our needs. It's not too far from the village and shops in Lake Arrowhead. We also loved the history of this cottage and found it very interesting that it was once owned by Bugsy Siegel. They even included a fun game where you can open a safe and obtain a prize. My wife and I loved that nice little touch. Overall, we highly recommend this cottage. A great place that's not too expensive for a nice weekend getaway.

Cute and cozy cabin 🏠

We stayed for one night and enjoyed the coziness of the place. The place was clean and it had the feel of home away from home with all the amenities (internet, smart TV...). The owner was very friendly and immediately responded to our messages. We surely will visit again and recommend the place.

Clean, well put together cabin w/ plenty of space to rest your head and cook at meal.

Would stay again and would recommend. We didn't spend much time at the location, but it's a perfect place to rest your head.

We live in Brea in SoCal and have several vacation rentals in the area and also in CO. We LOVE the mountains and thrive on short escapes from the "concrete jungle" to the mountains any chance we get. This picture is how the cabin looked when we got it. It was quite the renovation project in the worst winter in Arrowhead in 15 years. We are proud of how it turned out and are excited to share it with our guests. We welcome your feedback and suggestions!

Why they chose this property

The property is located in the Villas where it can be tight amongst neighbors with narrow roads. The Bugsy cottage is on a 14,000 sf lot so there is space to enjoy the surroundings. It is SO comfortable and cozy with some outside space to relax and enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Get lost in a bit of history and learn more about the Bugsy era. Aside from the unique surroundings mentioned above, there are some surprises inside as well. There are two hidden safes and if you can find them, you will be rewarded for your efforts. The Hints and Instructions document you will receive contains your clues. The Murphy Bed/Sofa combination is unique and the most comfortable bed ever! It pulls down over the sofa and raises up to make use of the living space during the day. The loft is equipped with 2 small portable fans that can be used as a cell phone charger. The fireplace provides temperature regulated heat with a remote and will keep you warm even if the power happens to go out. The patio is charming and great for outdoor grilling or just relaxing. Equipped with a window A/C unit in the summer, the cabin stays comfortable.
