About this property

Beautiful Adobe Overlooking Ghost Ranch And Abiquiu Lake

Please see important NOTE at the end of this description regarding RV's and other recreation vehicles.

'It was all so far away--there was quiet and an untouched feel to the country and I could work as I pleased.' Georgia O'Keeffe

Serenity abounds at Casa Bonita, where it is easy to see why this country had such a profound impact on Georgia O'Keeffe. Light and open, this modern adobe rests on ten acres overlooking Abiquiu Lake towards Ghost Ranch, with gorgeous views in all directions. Picture windows throughout the living area allow you to appreciate the vistas from the comfort of the well-appointed interior. The covered portales (covered porches) are ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the environment. Admire the view of the Pedernal from the portale off of the master suite, or take in the iconic landscape of Ghost Ranch while you grill on the portale off of the kitchen.

Spend your days hiking, visiting area galleries, or reconnecting with your own creative side. And after enjoying the unique sunset at the end of the day, savor the starlight of the unadulterated night sky.

'My first memory is of light--the brightness of light--light all around.' Georgia O'Keeffe

NOTE: RV's, trailers of any sort, large trucks, and small vehicles: motorcycles, skimobiles and such are prohibited in this gated community, called High Mesas.

Stunningly beautiful and serene

We loved everything about this beautiful adobe home. The views in every direction are absolutely gorgeous. The house itself is lovely, elegantly appointed and constructed with care. Perfect, well-stocked kitchen and huge living room windows to enjoy the view toward Lake Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch beyond. We had a very comfortable stay. Highly recommended.

Quiet Inspiration

Our first trip to New Mexico brought us to this wonderful oasis in the high desert. Words cannot describe the peaceful tranquility that abounds. Star gazing is beyond belief! It is the most incredible views ever. The Pedernal is Amazing! The Adobe house is excellent and well stocked. It was our most memorable little road trip ever and would love to return some day!

Magical Stay

Traveling to this stay was everything we had wanted. The home was both welcoming and very much a slice of paradise. The views are amazing and the location both peaceful and serene. John, the host, was beyond accommodating given our lack of technical skills. This stay was a 10+. Visiting the home and area of Georgia OKeefe was so impressive given our love of her work. Abiquiu is just a vortex of beauty. We will definitely return.

Fantastic!

So, because sometimes I drive the struggle bus, we got lost on the way to the house. We called John and he was so nice and kind about the whole thing. He told us over the phone exactly how to get to the house, and stayed on the phone with us until we got there. The house was very secluded and so nice. The loudest thing were the birds waking us up every morning. The house was very clean and nice. Our son loved exploring the property and finding skipping rocks in the river bed. It was a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. Thank you so much for everything!!!

Simply Amazing

I cannot imagine a more incredible view, and that is not hyperbole folks! This lovely and well-designed house is populated with interesting art, but not in any way cluttered - leading to a peaceful and calming ambience. The smells of juniper and pine wafting through the open windows were wonderful. And, of all the many places I've stayed, this one is by far the most well-appointed with kitchen supplies, towels, and expendables so that we lacked for nothing. We did not want to leave. I hope we will be able to return, as I have a strong hankering to use that kiva fireplace in the cold season.

Brilliant Star of Northern New Mexico

This Santa Fe-style adobe outpost provides the best of the best in remote, but modern, lodging overlooking Lake Abiquiu and the superb scenery adjacent to the Jemez mountain range. Located on 10 acres of desert ridgetop, the views by day extends to the red rock cliffs of the Ghost Ranch to the north and the famous Cerro Pedernal painted by Georgia O'Keefe just to the south. East and west are mountain byways and river canyons thick with golden cottonwood in October. The home is a 10 minute drive from NM 96 on well-groomed gravel drives through a development which appears to require preservation of the natural setting on very widely spaced home lots. We enjoyed our drives in and out, especially when the resident prairie dogs were active along the road. Twenty minutes away, the Abiquiu Inn Cafe's gourmet cuisine was all the dining we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed eating at home with our million dollar views and well-equipped kitchen. I will miss the wonderful fridge and stovetop! One bedroom shares the living room's unparalleled view across the valley to the lake and red cliffs. It enables a rare ability to stargaze from a comfortable bed and heated floor. The master bedroom has a view of pinyon/juniper woodland in a ravine, as well as a glimpse of Cerro Pedernal. As we are two astronomers who came to see the 2023 annular eclipse, we very much enjoyed our dark-sky basecamp with its resident telescope. Highest rating!

Awesome house! Once we figured out how to find the home...guilty for not reading instructions prior to arrival...it was great! We found the home address and using google maps made it easier to get to. Roads are a bit rough as the house is rather remote...not a big deal bc we have an explorer with decent tires. The house, furnishings, supplies and everything about the property is really amazing. Thanks for being an excellent host.

09/02/25-09/09/25 - My ninth visit to Casa Bonita, this time with my partner, Jerry (his first visit to the Land of Enchantment). This visit just as wonderful as the previous eight visits (if that is possible)! For me, some repeat experiences, and some new and amazing experiences for both of us. Hope to return next year for a ten-year anniversary! Casa Bonita feels like a second home to me! Thanks, John! Vicky

We won’t forget our first day walking down the arroyo to Abiquiu Lake. What a sense of beauty!

We loved everything about this place. The house is beautifully designed and set in the desert, it has a great connection with its surroundings. The interior is uplifting with stunning views, comfortable furniture and the colour palette of the south-west. We enjoyed the light coming through the windows and doors, the stillness and continuity of the sky and landscape. We won’t forget our first day walking down the arroyo to Abiquiu Lake. What a sense of silence, solitude, and beauty! We adored the Chama River and Ghost Ranch canyon, red rock cliffs and the smell of sage while hiking Kitchen Mesa. Miro bought some hand-picked eggs from the monks instead of tasting their beer. The Monastery Brewery was closed five years ago. Our trips to Chaco Canyon, Santa Fe and Taos Pueblo were great experience.John is an exceptional host, caring very much for his visitors and his house.Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us!Miro and Dagmar
