Charming 2 BR, nestled on Buckhannon River, with deck, dock, fire-pit, & kayaks
Located in Volga, WV, The River House is surrounded by natural beauty along the Buckhannon River. Outside is a deck, dock, & fire-pit ringed with Adirondack chairs. Inside a blend of vintage & modern amenities will welcome you. Escape to this charming 2-bedroom, 1-bath riverfront retreat—perfect for a relaxing getaway or an outdoor adventure. Both bedrooms feature cozy queen beds, along with the living room’s pull-out sofa and the convertible sleeper loveseat in the sunroom, the home comfortably sleeps up to 6 adults (could be up to a maximum of 8 guests if mixture of adults and children - extra fee for each guest over 6).
With 1,200 sq. ft. of space, you’ll enjoy a spacious living room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a beautiful sunroom that doubles as the dining area. Each bedroom and the living room are equipped with smart TVs for streaming, and the home is stocked with thoughtful amenities— Wi-Fi, phone & accessory charging stations, extra blankets, small appliances, board and yard games, toys, books, a BBQ grill & utensils, roasting sticks, plus kayaks, life jackets, and floats for enjoying the river during warmer months.
A quiet, single-lane country road (with more ATVs and golf carts than cars) runs between the cottage and its 100 yards of private river frontage. Across the road, you’ll find a 12’ x 16’ riverside deck with a patio table and chairs, perfect for morning coffee or evening sunsets. Steps from the deck lead down to an 8’ x 8’ dock* for fishing, launching kayaks, or dipping your toes in the water. Nearby, a fire pit with Adirondack chairs invites you to gather under the stars. A large backyard offers even more space to relax or play yard games like bocce ball or corn hole.
Across the river, you might spot the occasional passing train—only a couple times a day—but its distant whistle adds a touch of rustic charm. Wildlife is part of the experience here: deer, ducks, geese, and squirrels are daily visitors, and on a rare occasion you might see turtles, beavers, mink, bald eagle, or even a black bear. This is rural West Virginia at its best—peaceful, scenic, and full of fresh air.
Other things worth noting: You’ll be just under 6 miles from Audra State Park, about 9 miles from Philippi, and 12 miles from Buckhannon. One fire-pit bundle of wood is complementary. Additional firewood is available at a charge of $5 per bundle. Cell signal is mostly non-existent but cell phones work with wifi calling. You will be in a rural area on the river, so bug spray is recommended. *Absent unexpected circumstances, the dock will be accessible May - November. It is removed during the winter and not put back in the water until mid-Spring.

About the host
Hosted by Heather Anderson
I’m from Buckhannon, WV where I live with my partner, Jason, and our two fur-babies, Ember and Potter. This is our first short term rental hosting experience. We love meeting people and strive to be super hosts!
Why they chose this property
We love the location of The River House—close enough for a quick overnight escape, yet far enough to feel a world away from our everyday routine. From the sunroom, we can watch the river flow by, take leisurely kayak trips downstream, enjoy a friendly game of bocce ball, or try our luck fishing for “the big one.”
The wildlife here is incredible. In just a few short months, we’ve spotted mink, beaver, and even a black bear across the river—along with the daily visits from deer, ducks, geese, and squirrels.
Our favorite addition is the custom-built deck and dock. Evenings often mean dinner on the deck, followed by a cozy campfire in the fire pit. The neighborhood is wonderfully peaceful, with as many golf carts and ATVs passing by as actual cars. Across the river, the railroad tracks add their own charm—the soft whistle of a passing train a couple of times a day is like a soundtrack to this little slice of paradise.
What makes this property unique
Stillwater – The River House is truly one of a kind! With nearly 100 yards of private riverfront and sweeping views, it offers a front-row seat to nature’s beauty. This is more than just a getaway—it’s an all-inclusive country retreat.
Your stay includes a wealth of extras: kayaks and floats for river adventures, patio furniture for outdoor dining, board and yard games like Monopoly, Poker, Bocce Ball, and Corn Hole, children’s toys, books for every age, a BBQ grill, a cooler for cold beverages outdoors, phone and accessory chargers, and much more.
The newest addition is a 12’ x 16’ private deck with steps leading down to an 8’ x 8’ dock*—perfect for fishing or an afternoon by the water. Evenings often end gathered around the campfire, roasting marshmallows, sharing stories, and reconnecting with family and friends.
Inside, the home is tastefully decorated with art and photography showcasing West Virginia’s most iconic landscapes, from the New River Gorge Bridge to Seneca Rocks and Blackwater Falls. Shelves are adorned with West Virginia–made treasures like colorful Fiestaware and stunning Blenko Glass, adding local charm to every corner.
The sunroom is perfect for morning coffee, indoor dining, or evening game night - all while enjoying stunning views of the Buckhannon River.
*Absent unusual circumstances, the dock will be accessible May - November. It is removed during the winter and not put back in the water until mid-Spring.
