HOUSE DESCRIPTION - Newly Renovated!

• Front Porch
• Spacious Back Deck (partially covered)
• Sleeps 10
• 4 Bedrooms
• 3 Full Baths
• Fully furnished
• Close to Philippi/ABU and many state parks

The Tygart River Guest House offers a spacious “old timey” front porch, complete with swing, rocking chair and plenty of easy lounging wicker furniture – great for lazy days on the river. High ceilings will greet you through the front entrance where original bead board walls whisper stories from the distant past and restored yellow pine floors pave the way to a more contemporary present. We have brought together period elements from the coal mining era joining them with contemporary colors and modern amenities.

The ground floor offers two bedrooms. The one directly to your left upon entering, features a classic full size wrought iron bed dressed in quilts with two lamps and nightstands, armoire and river views. The room to your right boasts a sunny disposition arrayed in hues of red and green. Its companions are an ornate metal queen size bed, ceiling fan, closet and comfortable chairs. Continue down the hall into the open Dining Room which is centrally located and acts as a hub for the whole household to gather between the Living Room and Kitchen. For the musically inclined, there is an upright piano dating back to the early 1940’s and a large country table with pullout extensions to comfortably seat 10 people. Additional seating can be found at the breakfast bar.

The Kitchen is equipped with microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, gas cook stove, antique country sink and drain board and ceiling fan/light. Glass sliding doors separate the kitchen from a private back deck with patio set and a semi-private backyard view.

You’ll be right at home in the spacious Living Room with sloped ceiling and hardwood floors, leather couch, and loveseat. An oak armoire entertainment center houses a TV and DVD Player. One of the most unique features of this home is the large antique oak pocket doors at your disposal to close off the Living Room if more privacy is needed. There is a convenient full bathroom just off the Living Room with a shower and beautiful slate tile floors. On the opposite side of the house is a Laundry Room with washer and dryer, clean tile floors and laundry table. This room leads to another full bathroom with full size tiled shower.

Upstairs, there is a full bathroom with tile floors and windows on all sides giving it a bright airy feel with an antique claw foot bathtub for soothing relaxation. Exiting the bathroom, there is a bedroom on your left complete with a full size bed, roomy closets, TV and DVD player, full river-facing windows and carpeted floors. There is a gorgeous view of the river from the hallway as well, where you can perch for a look from above. Finally, we arrive at the bunk bed room to the right of the hallway. It also has a view of the river, full carpeting and two sturdy bunk beds to comfortably sleep four people. One bunk bed features staircase access to the upper bunk for easy access.

Nice family getaway
We enjoyed our stay although the weather did not allow us to fully enjoy all the property had to offer. The house is large enough for multiple families. The beds were very comfy. If you have any early risers in your group, they should be on the first floor as every step taken upstairs is heard thru the entire house and the stairs are very loud. The kitchen is well equipped as was everything in the house from extra blankets, towels and detergent for laundry.

Great Place for Family
Highly recommend this home especially for a large family get-together. We had 4 couples plus a 3yr old and 3mo old. The large open area between the kitchen, dining room and living room worked great for meals, games and crafts! We sang camp songs around the campfire. Took fun group photos. Climbed on rocks in the river. Great place!

Spacious house in a lovely setting
We were very pleased with how spacious the house was. The kitchen, dining room, living room, and both front porch and back porches were very open and great places for a large family to hang out. We loved the rocks and the river across the road. There are lots of good parks nearby, but we found ourselves spending more time at the house, and the river in front than we anticipated. It was a pleasant surprise!

About the host

Hosted by Sherry Hubbard

Host profile image
Josh and Sherry Hubbard moved to West Virginia many decades ago as avid rafters & kayakers who loved the whitewater and the abundance of rivers and streams in the area. We found a place along the river we're still here! Now we have a growing family and have become knitted into the fabric of West Virginia. Josh is a local artisan crafting wood and metal into truly beautiful works of art. Sherry works from home as a freelance writer and graphic designer. We have a home next door to the guest house and are nearby if you have a questions or need a hand and we're always happy to help you plan your getaway to Wild and Wonderful WV!

Why they chose this property

Parts of the guest house date back to the early 1900's during the coal mining era when tracks of the B & O Railroad line ran directly through the community of Arden. Since those days, an extensive renovation and many amenities have been added to make a comfortable yet historic guest house. It's a great spot to gather with friends and family since you have the run of the place. It sleeps 10-12 easily and there are plenty of central gathering areas to spend time together.

What makes this property unique

This home is situated on the Tygart River with views from every bedroom as well as the front porch. It's a lovely out of the way place to catch your breath and enjoy the mountain air. Period elements from the early 1900's are still preserved in the home including original pine floors and bead board walls along with relics from the coal mining era. Josh is a West Virginia artisan creating art out of wood and metal. He built a driftwood gazebo next to the river which comes from local wood collected along the Tygart. We hope you enjoy!
