Historic and spacious

The beautiful wrap-around porch with several different seating options was our first hint that we could all spread out comfortably. The 9 of us, including 2 toddlers and a dog, had plenty of room, whether in one of the many bedrooms, in the library, the dining area, or the family room. Over 3 days, we never tired of examining the old photographs and paintings that filled every room. We enjoyed reading a brief history of the property in the family's binder and discovering that George Washington is thought to have once traveled a path through the yard to the woods in back. Given the house's proximity to Fort Necessity, this seems very likely! The yard was huge, with tons of area for the kids and the dog to roam, while the in-ground pool was sparkling clean and a real treat at the end of a long day. For those with kids, this a great house for hide n seek. You will feel like you're stepping back in time! The owners of the house were very quick to respond to all our questions. We extended our stay an extra day to enjoy the property a little longer. I've stayed in many great properties, but this was my favorite and earns my highest recommendation.

Old Fashioned Christmas

My family loved the history and charm of Victorian Orchard. We we so pleasantly surprised that the house was decorated for the holidays complete with a decorated tree and Christmas music playing! We even had a white Christmas as it snowed the first few days we were there. We had plenty of room for all the family who planned to stay. We hiked, visited Ft. Necessity and Braddocks grave, Kentuck Knob, Cucumber Falls and other beautiful vistas in Ohiopyle. Was a perfect Christmas!

Communication with the owners was quick and easy. This property is truly the most well-cared for house that we have ever stayed at. We will definitely be back next year! Great for reunion

Charming Victorian near Ohiopyle, Kentuck Knob, Fort Necessity, etc. Worked out perfectly for a family reunion. Very well stocked kitchen (but bring your own favorite spices). Pool was great even though it was chilly; the teenagers didn’t seem to mind much! A few of us walked over to Klay winery (it’s that close) but it’s far safer to drive.

Great house. Lots of room. Beautiful property.

What a great home. It was just like it was described. Lots of room for all of our family. We were even able to enjoy the pool because it was such a warm October day. Make sure you walk back to the remote fire pit. Easy walk and such a peaceful place to enjoy God’s creation. We saw deer close to the house. Ended the evening enjoying s’mores. Great visit and made lots of memories. Would stay here again.

this property was full of character and charm. the vintage house is full of nooks and crannies with surprises in most of them. from classic old magazines to board games, even some Charlie chan dvds from the 50's the house has something for everybody. there are hiking trails on property and two fire pits for outside gatherings. the pool is the only concession to modernity and it is a welcome one. we had a great stay and would recommend it highly..

Beautiful Older Style Farmhouse

Over all my experience was good. My group and I were not aware the pool was under construction when booking, with the hot weather we were looking forward to the relaxation. We also experienced an alarming number of ticks when walking around the property. We would have appreciated a warning. We loved the beautiful wrap around porch.

It was perfect

I usually write a detailed review, but honestly there is not much to add to the previous reviews. Everything written here is completely accurate. The property is lovely and well maintained. Everything you need is there. There are 5 bedrooms plus extra sleeping space if needed. The owners are friendly and immediately responsive if there is any issue. The pool was of course the big hit for everyone in the family. I highly recommend this rental property.

Wonderful Getaway

Professional and friendly communication. Clean and nicely stocked, charming home. Plenty of room for the 10 of us. Beds and pillows sooooo comfortable. Convenient having a bathroom upstairs and on main floor. LOVED the porch, the pool, firepit and the stars! Nice short hike to an absolutely beautiful view! Paul was very helpful answering our questions about the local scene. We loved being central to all we wanted - the falls, Ohiopyle, Nemacolin zipline, Fort Necessity, Summit Inn and the many restaurants around. We would definitely stay again and recommend this property. Thank you!

Wonderful Thanksgiving Vacation at Victorian Orchard

Our family of 12 (3 generations, 6 adults, 6 children 14 - 3) had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend at Victorian Orchard. We found the recent reviews to be very accurate in describing the uniqueness, charm and completeness of all provisions, and so I will not repeat all its marvelous features. We also used the linen service and would recommend it if you are a large group. When we arrived, the lights were on, the house was warm and there were seasonal decorations everywhere. The house has been lived in for generations and shows that by all the extras that rental houses never have (e.g., a piano, boxes of Legos, bread maker, etc.). We filled the house, but never seemed cramped because of all the space. The kids loved the library and used it as their play room so they were close but away from adult conversations; there are lots of books and old magazines there, and two with allergies had to take their meds but they loved playing there. I used the kitchen facilities extensively (pies, bread, rolls, turkey, ham, etc.) and found it to be very easy to use and amazingly complete! We enjoyed the 70 acre grounds extensively, and this really makes Victorian Orchard unique. We brought a go-cart and enjoyed driving it on the trails up to the upper fire pit. With the owners permission we brought guns and they guys enjoyed target shooting. Then there was football, field hockey, frisbee, soccer and the convenient fire pit near the house. We also went to Fallingwater and Ohiopyle state park; there is so much more to do on future visits! We even made a trip to the Uniontown ER for strep throat. All of our interactions in the community were very pleasant and lived up to the friendliness of the Laurel Highlands area. The manager David and owners Paul and Mary Lou were friendly, responsive and very helpful. In conclusion, Victorian Orchard was the best rental house that our family has rented for family gatherings and we certainly are looking forward to coming back in all seasons, especially when it is warm and can use the pool!

About the host

Hosted by Lindsay at TLVR

Host profile image
Victorian Orchard’s original house dates back to pre-1880. The Wiggins family purchased the estate in 1904. A major renovation was done in 1906 bringing the house to it’s current appearance.

Here is some history, the Wiggin’s were a wealthy prominent family that also owned Fox Hunters Paradise, an inn above Deer Lake that was visited by wealthy Pittsburghers in 1820's. That house is gone now.

Victorian Orchard was bought by Henry Wiggins [grandson of Deer Lake house mentioned above] along with his wife Hulda and six children. It was as a farm where they raised sheep for wool, grew mostly irish potatoes, apples and honey. Frank Gleason bought the house from the Wiggins in 1921 and made it a popular boarding house in the area.

Interestingly, Victorian Orchard is still in the family, Henry Wiggins while serving in the Civil War befriended my mother’s great uncle who married one of Henry's daughters.
Our parents, Frank and Sue Wilhelm, bought the house in 1959. After my parents passed in 2003, we decided to renovate the property for a vacation rental so that we could keep it in the family. We all have such fond memories of living there… Sled riding, berry picking, just exploring on all that property, learning to drive in the field, rollerskating on the porch[and in the huge kitchen], bike riding, making swings on all the old trees, but mostly playing baseball with the neighborhood kids in that big field. We still all get together there on holidays for dinner and fun [if the house isn't rented]. All of us live nearby and do the upkeep ourselves. It is a family home that exudes the warmth and joy of several families being raised there.

What makes this property unique

The property is full of history. Most of the Wiggins are buried across the road in the Lutheran cemetery, Cuthbert Wiggins [Henry's grandfather] helped build and remained on as the innkeeper at the Stone House. The Wiggins were known wagoneers on the National Road. The longest existent trace of the Braddock’s Trail is on our property, as well as, Old Orchard Camp mentioned in the French and Indian War where George Washington camped. That's how old orchard camp came into the name of our house. Antiquities from then have been found; a musket ball from the campaign and a few horseshoes.
