This was a July family trip including 2 older adults, 3 younger adults, and a 5 year-old covering 5 nights. We loved this home and our time here. It is an older home, but it is well-maintained inside and out, and the gardeners have created a paradise in the back. It is easy to be reminded of an Hawaii of years past. There are homes close in to the left and right, but, in the back yard, they were easy to ignore. Everything you will likely need in the kitchen is there. My only complaint: the price. Still, we are glad we did it because this will be a lasting memory. Some things worth noting by prospective renters: (1) You access 1 room from the living room, but the other 3 are accessed by climbing some stairs to an outside landing, upon which the rooms exit. Picture a hotel. (2) There is no AC in the common areas. Each roon has its own. (3) Due to the high cost of electricity, Helen has the AC turned off when guests leave, so expect the home to be hot when you arrive. It took us 4 hours to bring the temp down to the mid-70's. After that, we had no problem staying comfortable. (4) Helen states that she cannot eradicate the ants, so don't leave any open food on the kitchen counter. All and all, if you don't mind the price, I can heartily recommend this home. Oh, by the way, it is in a beautiful area.

It was an incredible place in an incredible area. The hosts were amazing and the place was better than we could of hoped. Would absolutely stay again. We really liked it was a family property with a lot of great history and well taken care of.

We got married here so we are biased. We love Makena. The area is insanely beautiful. The grounds are well maintained. And the rooms are private, each with a separate bathroom & AC. The AC works very well. Helen is responsive and quickly answered any questions. As others have stated, the cleaning was good and it did smell clean when we came in, but there are small dead bugs in virtually every window and in corners. To be fair, I did not see any (live) roaches or ants but there are mosquitos in Makena and we did get bit frequently. This did not happen in Kihei or Lahaina. The common area will be very warm when you arrive, discomfortingly so, but if you turn on all the AC's it does help somewhat. This makes gathering together as a family uncomfortable but fans help circulate the air. We left 2 for others. But we knew what to expect. None of the balconies had furniture to enjoy the view which I found strange. And there is absolutely no beach gear provided. No umbrellas, no chairs. The owner stated she had an issue with theft but with people paying a pretty penny, and flying out, I think her guests are not to blame. Some of our dissapointments will not be relevant to anyone who has not stayed at the property before. There is no longer any beach or bay access. The small bay we used to use is no longer part of the property. This dissapointed us and we may not have booked had we known as we loved kayaking there & visiting the turtles. But there is no where like Makena. Magical.

We have had this property for a very long time and have found that our guests accept this and are able to purchase or rent what they need when they visit. I am unsure that you are referring to when you said "there is no longer any beach or bay access". There has never been any formal beach or bay access from our property at any time. Guests continue to use a walkway next to the small green bunker.There is a small sandy beach park nearby which are guests our encouraged to use. Please come back again. There is a lot of family love in this home, making us sorry to give such an example of “old Hawaii” a poor review. It is a 10/10 for its location, but it needs improvements to live up to its description as an “exceptional vacation rental experience.” The views are spectacular, but the house is not well maintained. Cushions, pillows, sheets, and beach towels were old and grungy. Outdoor furniture is minimal (chipped wooden chaise, a broken picnic bench, and plastic chairs) and we had to stack cushions on the lanai chairs for comfort. If you travel with elderly, steps are tricky and the driveway is steep. We kept the house clean, but a cockroach flew into my pillowcase in the upstairs bedroom. The trundle in the 2nd bedroom did not fit under the bed, creating a tripping hazard. In the kitchen, the chef’s knife broke the first time we used it, and the coffee maker’s red “clean” light was on. No ice machine, just trays. The bottles of soap in the bathrooms and kitchen had been watered down; you could see the soap floating on top of a layer of water, and it wouldn’t lather. The WiFi only connected to the internet sporadically, so we could not use the smart TV or connect our phones consistently.Finally, there is only AC in the bedrooms. It was miserably hot in August and we couldn’t enjoy any of the common areas due to the oppressive heat. Helen is responsive, but if we had known all this ahead of time we would’ve booked elsewhere. It was not a good value for the price.

This home was great. Great location, very easy check in, beautiful home, beautiful views, good layout, nice hosts (they even checked in on us during the tsunami warning), all in all loved it. I have 2 complaints... first is having no ac throughout the home. During family dinner, or just family time in general, while in the kitchen or any family area in the home it wasnt very comfortable or relaxing due to the heat. The only ac units are window units in each bedroom, which worked so we were able to sleep well at night.Secondly, the seating and shade issues on the beach deck area. There is a bench but no real comfy seating to enjoy the view and hang out. There is also no real shade either, no umbrella or pop up canopy available. The picture below shows the little shade we were able to find. But other than those small complaints, I'd stay here again. Thank you

We truly appreciate that you and your group enjoyed our property. We really try to provide a warm, welcoming experience. As to your comments regarding the lack of air conditioning, the cost of electricity here in Hawaii is substantially higher then other places in the mainland. As a compromise we do air condition the bedrooms. Additionally, as the house is open via the French doors in the living room and if that area was air conditioned, most of any cool air would be lost due to the openness of the area. Most guests use the patio and other outside areas to gather. Finally, we have provided umbrellas for our guests in the past, but unfortunately they have a tendency to "walk off" never to be seen again. Umbrellas are available for rent from several businesses in Kihei if they are needed. David, we would welcome you back any time you want to return to Maui and appreciate your thoughtful comments. Cleanliness and property care

Broken lawn chairs and picnic tables that fell over upon sitting. Dirty socks greeted us upon arrival. Cockroaches in rooms where basic cleaning would have gotten. AC not on upon arrival so house was extremely hot. Messaged host about these issues when my stay was over and simply received a “Mahalo” Beautiful area and neighborhood tho. Overall okay stay!

Maui is a tropical island and critters are expected. We do have our property treated every 3 months, but the bugs can be elusive. They can hide and then come out later. About the "dirty sock.". Staff found that a sock was tied to a fishing line, where some person or persons came onto the property without our knowledge and left their line behind. Makena is very warm in the summer and electricity is very expensive to operate. Past guests just opened the windows and doors to cool down the rooms when they arrive. We have never before had an issue with this matter. Lastly, we did respond to your comments by saying "We appreciated your comments and had passed them on to our staff." Mahalo and Aloha, Helen

Excellent location and views

Great location and overall spacious, it is not a modern home but mostly comfortable. We very much enjoyed the patio on the ocean. Afternoons got very hot in the main area of the home as there is no AC, only in the bedrooms so rest time was often in the bedroom. The driveway area to park was very steep and difficult. We rented a pickup truck and van to accommodate our family and luggage and we struggled with parking. BUT the views and yard made up for it, very beautiful!

What an amazing stay we had at Lu'uwai's at Makena Landing! The location is the best we have ever had an any of the many VRBOs we have rented. The snorkeling is one of the top places on the island. We spent many hours on the deck by the water where you can watch snorkelers, go for a swim, watch beautiful sunsets and stargaze. The house is fully equipped and is as described in the listing. We really appreciated the homey Hawaiian feel to the house. It is an easy two minute walk to Makena Landing with great snorkeling and fun boogie boarding. It is a short ride to many other beautiful beaches including Big Beach. Helen was very easy to work with, gracious, responded promptly and made our stay pleasurable. It was a perfect vacation for the whole family. We look forward to returning to this magical spot!

70th Birthday With Friends

Makena Landing or now known as "Helen's Place" is a one of a kind vacation destination on Maui. The waterfront location is perfect for swimming with the turtles or just a quick dip to cool off. Take extra care when getting in and out of the water on the lava rocks. The ocean can get a little rough at times. The huge grass yard is ideal for star gazing at night and the covered lanai is perfect for outdoor dining. Everyone has their own room and bathroom, so there's plenty of privacy. It's also an ideal location for exploring beautiful sand beaches just a few miles south. I've stayed there twice now and I will definately be back.

Amazing location

We all had a fabulous time at Helen’s place. We have stayed at this property before and plan to come back again. The snorkeling right off the property is amazing!!!! The views are second to none and Helen is a fantastic host who is very responsive. Worth every penny.

Perfect Maui Setting

WE had a great stay. Plenty of room for the family. There were 11 of us (6 adults and 5 grown kids). the outside entry to the upstairs bedrooms was very convenient and gave each group privacy and at the same time a feeling of being all together. The views were amazing. Makena is special and just remote enough to be peaceful. Great snorkeling and turtle watching right in front of the property. We loved it.

Great Ohana Celebration!

Our family with three adult children and all of their spouses and all of our grandkids, ages 2-14 stayed during the Holiday 'break', 2023. Everything we wanted and needed was right there. Comfort in the house, in the yard, a place to jump into the ocean for the best snorkeling in Maui, a turtle beach within feet of the house, and a small, public beach within 2 minutes walking distance of the house. Plenty of adventure within our little paradise of a property. This is our third time at Makena House. The first was when my son married a Maui girl and arranged for us to stay here. Paradise for the entire Hallagin Ohana!

Ultimate Oceanfront View

My cheeks hurt…from smiling! This is the real “Turtle Town.” Also plenty of whale sightings. No need to spend money for snorkel and/or whale watching cruises. Stay at this older house to really enjoy Maui as it used to be: no road noise, no high rise buildings in sight! Thank you, Helen!

The house is perfectly situated on Makena Bay if you love snorkeling. It is right on the water with the most amazing views. I loved that each bedroom had it's own bathroom. One drawback was that one of the bedrooms has a single and a trundle bed which isn't ideal for a couple. Helen was very responsive and sent me back a make up case I had forgotten. We had a hitch in the beginning but it was settled amicably.

I married into the family of this stunning property in the late 1950s. We raised our 3 boys and 7 grandchildren in Makena at this special property.

We purchased the property from a family member and have operated our piece of paradise for 23 years as a vacation rental.

There are stunning views of Molokini and Kaho'olawe islands and sometimes Lanai from the property. We have a great location that is close to dining, shopping and activities.

What makes this property unique

This is one of the last properties located in Makena owned by a Hawaiian family and has been passed down through the generations since the late 1870s.

Our family's roots go back over a hundred years and we operate this vacation rental in order to continue our family's ownership of it and to make it available for local cultural events as well as our visitors from around the world.
