The Jailhouse Inn

Welcome to the historic Elkader Jailhouse Inn. Built over 150 years ago to house Clayton County’s most notorious criminals, this beautifully restored 5,000+ square-foot limestone property sits on a scenic 3-acre bluff overlooking the rolling hills of Elkader, Iowa.

Choose from one of four uniquely designed suites, each combining character, comfort, and a touch of history. During your stay, enjoy access to shared spaces including the fully equipped kitchen, outdoor patio, and the unforgettable cell block. Don’t forget to take your mugshot for a memorable keepsake!

The Suites
Botanical Suite

A romantic and charming retreat, the Botanical Suite features a four-poster queen bed and carefully curated antique décor. The highlight is the spacious, spa-like bathroom with beautiful tile floors and a large air-massage tub designed for two. This suite offers a cozy yet luxurious escape.

Harstad Suite

The largest suite in the property, the Harstad Suite offers beautiful views and generous living space. With two queen beds, it comfortably accommodates up to four guests. Enjoy a café-style seating area, a relaxing air-massage tub, and thoughtful touches throughout. Named after local author and longtime Clayton County Sheriff’s Department member Donald Harstad, the suite also features a collection of his novels.

Emma Big Bear Suite

Perfect for families or small groups, this suite includes two bedrooms and accommodates up to five guests. The primary bedroom features a queen bed, while the adjoining room includes a double and a twin bed. The bathroom is located just across the hall. The suite is named after Emma Big Bear, a historical figure connected to the building’s past, adding another layer of authenticity to your stay.

I held my bachelor party there. We dressed up in old western outlaw attire and had a great time. The vibe of the house was perfect, while still providing modern amenities. Great kitchen and dining area for hosting a group. We all got our own room/beds. Perfect place and all went smoothly!!
