Hi, I’m Michelle . I spent my early years in Africa before moving back to the North East of England. I’ve always loved renovating properties, and when I discovered Tanyard House and its historic outbuildings in 2012, I knew it was a special project. I moved in 2013 and spent the following year restoring the buildings, finally completing the renovations in 2014. It has been a real privilege to bring these historic buildings back to life, and in 2015 I opened them as holiday lets to share their charm with visitors.
I love being a host because it allows me to share a piece of North Yorkshire history and help guests enjoy the peace, beauty, and character of village life. I’m happy to give tips on exploring the area, from scenic walks and historic houses to nearby towns and the coast, or I can let guests simply relax and enjoy the tranquility of the property.

Why they chose this property
I chose Whixley because it’s a truly special village with a strong sense of community. The people here are welcoming and take great pride in preserving the village’s character and heritage. Whixley is a designated conservation area, so its historic buildings, beautiful gardens, and scenic streets are carefully maintained, giving the village a timeless, picture‑perfect feel. Staying here means enjoying the tranquillity of rural North Yorkshire while being part of a community that values its history and natural surroundings.
What makes this property unique
Tanyard Cottage isn’t just a place to stay – it’s a living piece of Whixley’s history. One of the oldest properties in the village, Tanyard House and its outbuildings tell the story of a working Yorkshire community, woven into the very fabric of village life.
The house takes its name from the tannery that once operated here. Long before holiday lets existed, this was home to the village tanner, who lived and worked on the site, transforming animal hides into strong, durable leather – a skilled craft essential to rural life.
The beautifully converted Tanyard Barn has a story of its own. In the early 19th century, it served as a village pub, The Crown – a lively hub where locals gathered to share stories, celebrate milestones, and connect as a community. Beneath Tanyard House lies the original well, which historically supplied water to both the tannery and the pub, offering a tangible link to the rhythms of daily life centuries ago.
Tanyard Cottage, another thoughtfully converted outbuilding, shares fully in this heritage. Together, Tanyard House, Tanyard Barn, and Tanyard Cottage form a rare and historic cluster, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the authentic working life of a North Yorkshire village.
Set beside Whixley Park, the property enjoys open views and an immediate sense of peace and tranquillity. Whixley itself is almost picture-postcard perfect: a friendly village with a church recorded in the Domesday Book, beautiful gardens, and immaculately kept homes.
This is a chance to step into history and experience a property of genuine heritage, set within a serene and beautiful village. With all the modern comforts needed for a relaxing stay, Tanyard Cottage is the perfect base to explore, unwind, and soak up the unique character of this historic corner of Yorkshire.
