I am a 13th generation islander and grew up on Block Island. My mom moved off island after she married and we eventually settled in Narragansett, RI. We came out to the island almost every weekend and then for the whole summer. The Friday night boat, which was sometimes referred to as the daddy boat, was a thing of tradition. Even if you weren't expecting company, islanders would go down just to watch the boat come in and see who came off. And even though we were only going just across the street, my grandparents would meet us at the boat every Friday night.

I eventually graduated from URI and moved back to the island full time. I initially lived with my Nana and my mother in Payne Cottage. Three generations of island ladies all living together. I married Chris Hobe, the current Fire Chief on the island, in 2000 at Payne farm and we raised our two sons on Block Island. Reilly, our oldest, is a Providence fire fighter and also the owner of his own tree business out here. My youngest son, Zack, is due to graduate Block Island school in 2027.

Why they chose this property

This home, Payne Cottage, was built by my great, great, grandfather. He also built the Phelan House which is the building in front of Payne Cottage. My nana, Harriet Payne Phelan, grew up in this house as a child and then raised her family here as well.

What makes this property unique

Payne Cottage is the only single family residence on Water Street which is the main street of town. Hidden down a long driveway, the backyard is a private retreat. Surrounded by big trees, it overlooks the Catholic church with all the beautiful stained glass windows. You forget you're in the center of town until you walk down the driveway onto Water Street.
