House, 6 Bedrooms, 4.5 Baths, (Sleeps 18)
Why Owner chose Santa Rosa Beach
I have owned 3 different homes on 30a and I've been going down to the area for 40 years. I wanted a home that was big enough for family reunions and close to the beach- well I found it when I saw the Blue Whale.
What makes this House unique
The Blue Whale sleeps 18 which seems like a lot of people to accomodate and be comfortable at the same time. But what makes the house unique is that there is so much room to spread out. All the bedrooms have plenty of space, the great room covers the whole second floor along with the kitchen. Room for everyone. And the best is the front covered porch right off the great room. It can be a private oasis or a place to gather.

Great views, wonderful location!
The ocean views are breathtaking and the space is great! The house itself could use some tlc but overall a very good experience.
Great location and great kitchen/living room area. Just wish the pool was heated as it was too cold to get in during spring break. If it was over the summer it would probably be warm enough.
Somewhat nice house, TERRIBLE appliances
This could be a lovely house. Really. The space is delightful, it's in an amazing location and the house is really, really big. Love the decks. The rooms are all spacious.
But the house is honestly falling apart. The owner just has not taken care of it at all. I get that it's a rental property and it takes a beating, but when you pay what one pays to rent a house of this size for a week, you expect things like, say, an ice maker...or a microwave with a handle that doesn't fall off when you try to use it...or doors that can actually be latched. Seriously - in a house that sleeps almost 20 people, we were provided two tiny ice trays. That's absurd. On the rental site it says that the kitchen, etc was to be updated in 2015 as all the photos were posted in 2013. It has not been updated and needs it in the worst way. VERY dated.
The walls and bathrooms are all in need of paint and freshening, the wood on the cabinets in many places just dissolving. Most of the beds were very (overly firm) for our tastes. The dryer vent was disconnected and had been venting into the pantry for quite some time.We actually called about it - the pantry was full of lint as a result. The fix took about 5 minutes once the repairman arrived - but this just serves as evidence of how little care is being taken of the place. To his credit, upon being advised of the dryer vent, the owner did respond immediately and effectively.
The pool is a great size. The latch on one gate is broken, a safety hazard with smaller children. Some of the outdoor furniture, particularly on the 2nd floor decks was in poor repair and a few of the chairs are completely covered in rust.
Overall, we were a bit disappointed in the house because of the condition of the property. We've stayed in Sunset Beach before and were really excited to be staying in the community again because we thought we knew what to expect. Clearly, we were wrong. This house has a lot of potential, but it has been neglected and is certainly not up to the standards we would expect of such a house and location.
I'm not sure what the renter meant by house falling apart!!! The interior wa completely repainted, every room/wall etc in April 2017. So either it wasn't the renters color or she was just being picky. I agree renter was correct on ice maker- parts have been ordered and I found out about microwave handle was broken and that has been ordered as well.
The dryer vent became disconnected and it was reconnected asap after hearing about it. That has nothing to do w maintenance on house. When a problem is noticed or mentioned it is addressed asap. The mattresses are commercial/hotel grade- I can't offer different mattresses for every guest. Sorry.
I've had 200+ renters and really have had only a couple of reviews like this. Most of my summer renters come back every year and don't write reviews.
If you have questions feel free to email me. I hope you will give the blue whale a chance. Because if you do, you'll be back.
Great vacation beach home. Plenty of room for all of us. Spent most of it on porch watching beach
Owner was attentive. House was clean. New paint and updated decor.
Great Family Vacation
We stayed at the Blue Whale in September for a family vacation and it was great. The house was huge with 3 floors and an ocean view. It had 6 bedrooms which was perfect for the large group we had. The beach is right across the street, I would say a short 50 yards. The beach was great and not crowded at all. We brought our own beach chairs down there but others had rentals already set up on the beach. The house also has a pool which was great to cool off in when it got too hot down at the beach. Most of the time we cooked as the house has a very large kitchen and living room. There was a Publix right down the road where we bought most of our food which was very convenient. I also enjoyed the location as you were in a nice gated community but only 10 minutes from Watercolor and Seaside. I would also suggest eating out at Stinkys Fish Camp which is right down the road from the house. All in all it was a great trip and we are looking forward to staying at the Blue Whale again in 2015.
Clarification of Previous Review
Just to clarify my previous review, everything about the Blue Whale was outstanding. The house met our needs to a tee and I would highly recommend the house. Also, the owner is a pleasure to deal with and he communicated very well with those organizing our trip. Our issue was with an overzealous resident who apparently has a fixation on policing the parking in the neighborhood. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the Blue Whale or with the owner of the Blue Whale. Again, the Blue Whale is an outstanding rental property and we highly recommend it and as a matter of fact we have already booked it again for next year!
The beach is right out your front door.
