About this property

1926 Georgian Home Gives A Slice Of Small Town Living

Two story brick Georgian home built in 1926 with five bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths that can sleep up to 12 people. One bedroom with a king bed downstairs with a handicap accessible bath. Four bedrooms and two full baths upstairs. Master bedroom has a king bed and a full bath. Other bedrooms contain 2 queen beds and one with two twin beds. Each bedroom is large and it's own little retreat so family members have a comfortable place to get away and relax. The sofa in the living room also folds out to sleep an additional 2 people if needed. The home is tastefully decorated with vibrant colors and original artwork. There's a large backyard (unfenced) that provides ample room for cookouts and family get togethers. The kitchen is extremely functional and sunny along with being quite well stocked. The dining room seats 10 comfortably and we've fit 16 in for holiday dinners.
There's an outdoor seating area for 12 which includes an outdoor dining table and chairs for 6. We have a grill for cookouts as well.

The home is conveniently located in town and within walking distance of the village of Hazelwood. It's a 1 minute drive to downtown Waynesville or the golf courses at the Waynesville or Laurel Ridge Country Clubs and a 10 minute drive to Lake Junaluska. Asheville is a 30 minute drive east and The Great Smoky National Park a 30 minute drive west.

While it's an older home with all the charm and character that offers, we installed a new geothermal HVAC system in 2013. This keeps the house extremely comfortable and evenly heated or cooled. We also replaced most of the plumbing in 2014 and installed an instant hot water heater. This insures there's a continuous supply of hot water, even for the 10th shower along with good water pressure throughout the house.

Annual Christmas Trip
This house is amazing. The history is awesome. We enjoyed everything about our trip. The floor in the kitchen has separated some and needs minor repairs. Other than that, it's great.

About the host

This house is owned by Dan and Bernie. Dan grew up in this house and we purchased it from the estate after his parents passed. We live in San Diego, California for most of the year but get back to Waynesville as much as we can.

Why they chose this property

Dan's grandparents built this house and his mother lived 80 of her 85 years in this house. After my parents passed, I wanted to keep the house because of the family connection to the house and a desire to ultimately retire in Waynesville to this house. For me, the idea of retiring to this house is life coming full circle. There's an old saying -- a man spends the first half of his life running away from home and the second half running back to it and that's certainly true for me. Bernie grew up in a small town in upstate New York. While didn't grow up in the mountains of North Carolina, the small town atmosphere of Waynesville is a return to his roots in a way as well.

What makes this property unique

This is a large comfortable home that's in town and convenient to everything. If you're looking for a remote mountainside cabin away from it all where you have to drive 30 minutes to get to a grocery store, this isn't the place for you. But if you're looking for a comfortable, historic home in a great small town in the mountains that's a few minutes drive from everything, our home is perfect.
