Penna San Giovanni, located 672 metres above sea level, is a centre of considerable interest due to its landscape and climatic characteristics.
Its name derives from a pre-Latin term meaning rocky peak of a sharp and rugged shape and from the name of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the town, a follower of St Francis.
Based on some archaeological finds, its origin dates back to Roman times; the place was fortified in the Middle Ages.
On top of the hill stands a panoramic park where you will also find the remains of a tower of the original Rocca.
Not to be missed: the elegant Municipal Theatre, the only one in the province of Macerata built entirely of wood and painted by Antonio Liozzi (c. 1780), can be considered a Baroque masterpiece, perhaps the most important in the Marche region in the 18th century.
The Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista was built around 1250 and preserves the wooden statue of the Baptist and a Crucifix, works of considerable artistic importance from the 16th century.
There are shops and activities of various kinds, including grocery shops, butcher's, bakery, bar, farmhouse, pizzeria, bank, etc. You can buy excellent footwear, knitwear and genuine, quality food and wine products from local producers.
Throughout the year you can taste typical products at festivals organised in the village and in the surrounding area.
