Muhlebach Family Retreat - A Luxury Mountain Getaway

Muhlebach Family Retreat is a luxurious and beautifully renovated family retreat; an amazing place to spend the summer with family and friends. The renovated 3800 sqft, 5 bedroom 5 bath, the perfect getaway for families and retreats. The gourmet kitchen and amazing great room can seat all of your guests. At the end of your day's adventure, you can soak in the hot tub among the stars or play pool with the crowd.

The main level is the great room offering striking features such as the 22 foot tall hand-picked river stone fireplace, and a 400 year old reclaimed redwood bar that seats 7. The kitchen offers a new beautiful Viking range top with a built-in griddle, and new Jenn-Air speed cook ovens. The cook's kitchen is fully stocked including dinnerware for 18. A quick stroll to the deck takes you to the 7 person hot tub for a relaxing night under the stars.

Walk down a flight of stairs and you have 4 spacious bedrooms with 500+ thread count Supima sheets. The master suite has a king bed, stone fireplace, a 2 person Jacuzzi tub and a deck heading out to the back. The guest suite is a perfect king room with slate and granite bathroom. The other 2 rooms share a bath with dual sinks. The one room has a queen bed and lounge chair. The 4th room has a queen bed and a twin over full bunk bed with a deck and backyard access.

Below the bedrooms, is 900 square feet of relaxation space and kids retreat. The family room has a pool table and 60' screen TV. The other room is a bunk room for 6 with an en-suite bath with dual sinks and tub over shower. Kids love their own cubbies in each bunk equipped with power and USB outlets. Walk out of the family room into the spacious wooded retreat where trees and green space abound.

The house has pretty great internet. There is a modern router with 400mbs internet connection. The WiFi coverage is good and we have modern streaming on all TV's.

During the summertime and holidays, we favor week long rentals that are Friday to Friday or Sunday to Sunday. Our policy is a maximum of 8 adults. Extra guests may be possible for an extra fee and contacting us first.

VRBO does not have options for complex booking rules. Here are our house booking rules. We do not allow Saturday check-in or check-out. Midweek bookings require a Friday and Saturday night stay except in the case of 4 days Monday - Thursday.

Winter Weather and Summer Smoke. Both of these things can happen in Tahoe. We are an owner renter here. If you are booking our property we expect you to stay there and not hound us for a refund because traveling became difficult. If you are worried about winter weather (It can easily snow 100" inches in a few days) or summer smoke issues buy travel insurance.

In 2025, Tahoe Donner has changed its Short Term Rental access to allow 6 people per house at a cost of $24 per person per day. Because of this and the size of our house...I am now not recommending this.

The VRBO options above are not very helpful to me. These are the 3 most important things. Please make sure it is clear what is dirty and what is not. Dirty goes on the floor. Clean is off.
We have a very large home and on quick turnovers even with 2 washers laundry is a problem. If you can start 2 loads of towels that take the longest this would be very helpful.
Please take out any food related trash and put it in the bear box. Depending on the next guest schedule there are times the cleaners are not in for some days.
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.
Saturday Check-ins and Check-outs are not allowed. Exceptions are made for holiday scheduling.

Great Christmas vacation!

We stayed over Christmas weekend with family and had a blast! They have a ton of toys in the bunk room for kids. We were able to sled out in the back everyday and build really fun runs. Matt was very responsive when I had questions about the property, they also had an information sheet about the property when we got there. This is a special vacation rental. We would love to stay here again.

Matt's house is spread out over three levels and well equipped to handle our 3 generation family. It is everything we could imagine to give us a comfortable and fun weekend in the mountains. We found our host easy to comminicate with. The Tahoe Donner area is a beautiful location.

What a way to spend Spring Break

Fantastic stay for a party of 10 people. The check-in process was super easy, the house was incredibly well-equipped and we had an amazing time. Took advantage of the sleds and built a killer sled track right out the back steps. Would absolutely recommend this home to anyone. There was more than enough space for everyone and we had a great time.

This property is truly amazing! The location was perfect…just minutes from shopping and dining. The owner (Matt) quickly answered questions we had when we arrived. Perfect layout…living room, kitchen, dining room, and jacuzzi on the main floor and then the rooms on the floors below. The bunk room and the pool table (bottom floor) were a big hit with the kids!!! We spent a lovely weekend in this great home. The location and views of the forest are perfect. The kitchen is well stocked and all the amenities are perfect. There was so much snow and sledding and snow play directly out the back door. Great communication with the owner who was even keeping us updated on some potential road closures. My children and grandchildren and I all had a lovely peaceful weekend!

This was exactly what we were looking for the place had more then enough space for the whole group we had three kids age 11,5,and 2. The had a blast down in the big room they loved the bunk beds they all got to choose which ever one they wanted and every one had plenty space the kitchen was perfect for the ‘chief’ in are group from cooking Breackfast in the morning to grilling steak’s in the evening. Was perfect I would recommend stay if you have a big group with kids. And of course would stay again

Tahoe Family Vacay

The property is beautiful, open and a comfortable space. The host was very responsive and helpful. We BBQ'ed, went on walks and watched the stars from the top deck. My family thoroughly enjoyed their stay and we hope to come back next year. It is one of the only places I have found that was able to accommodate my large family. Spent a day at Donner Lake and the next day on the Truckee River. All very close and easy to get to. Thank you, Matt!

Wonderful and roomy mountain house

The house has a nice great room with the kitchen, dining room and living room all together. We spend most of our time here cooking, playing games, watching movies and sitting by the fire. There is also a nice hot tub right off of this room. The bedrooms were also spacious and well-appointed. The kids loved the pool table room as well. Overall great house and great host. Awesome family house

We were a large family group with adults and kids. The house worked extremely well for us. It’s very well-stocked for cooking One highlight was the kids bedroom and recreation room on the bottom level. There was also a lot of equipment for the baby we had with us and many games and toys for the six and nine-year-olds. The owner was readily available by text and phone and was very easy to work with. We highly recommend this house.

Summer family vacation

We liked the house & location, but needs some maintenance and minor repairs (patio door handle , shower door handle; hot tub maintenance, smoke detectors malfunctioning). The ad for the house said we had full access to the rec center pool & fitness, but I don’t recall it mentioning a $20. Fee per person>6. The host was quickly responsive to texts. Again we loved the location and area, just had some issues with the house.

Fantastic, comfortable, spacious, fun home

We had a wonderful stay. There was plenty of room for our 4 families, which surprised us because we had never tried to find a single house for that many people before. But the setup works great: the common areas upstairs afforded plenty of room for all of us to hang out together, although it was rarely tested as the bottom floor had all sorts of space and diversions for the kids, right next to their own bunk room and bathroom. The middle floors were perfect for us four couples and a couple of the littler kids to sleep closer to their parents. The yard was perfect for some serious sledding runs and snowball fights, and the hottub provided well-needed rest after skiing/snowboarding. Everything worked well and was in great condition, and the love and care of Matt and his family was evident throughout. Matt was great with communication and obviously a really nice person. We're all looking forward to booking a trip here again next winter!

We are a family of 4 living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our family loves to retreat to the mountains both for the sun in the summer and the snow in winter.

Why they chose this property

We chose this property for easy access to the Bay Area and it's close proximity to the lodge including the great restaurant, bar and pools. We also love the ability to comfortably have multiple families enjoy the vacation together with the parents having private space and the kids loving their bunk room getaway.

What makes this property unique

The house is great for multi-families or a multi-generational family. The house walks in flat to the street with the wonderful great room for socializing, 4 bedrooms are the level below where all of the beds have memory foam toppers and 500 count linens. The lower level is kid heaven with a great bunk room that has 3 sets of built-in bunk beds with cubbies and USB chargers and ligths in each. There is an attached bath with double sinks. The room next to this has the 60' TV and 8-foot Olhausen slate pool table.

You cannot find a better place to have families gather.
