Amazing rental. Beautiful house and property. In hindsight we should have stayed longer vs heading to a different location near Kona and just do Kona day trips. Very clean property and uber relaxing both in terms of inside decoration and outside landscaping. We went into the location knowing there was a small selection of food options in the area so we planned ahead of time and had no issues.

Rainforest, tropical paradise!

We loved staying in this beautiful house! We arrived at night, saw boars twice along the drive, and saw more stars than we've seen in a long time. Waking up to a sunrise with a view of trees from every window was incredible. The sound of birds singing with a view of lush, Hawaiian vegetation while sipping morning coffee was invigorating for the soul. Oh, and Kilauea was erupting during our visit! We feel so fortunate to have stayed at Volcano Big Tree Sanctuary!

Excellent stay

What a beautiful place. A lot of extras on the property but we didn’t get to use as the location is very near volcanoes national park and we spent time all over the island

Magical

What an absolutely amazing property! Spotless and gorgeous. Like staying in a treehouse. I loved the birds, the gardens and walking trails. Our 6 year old loved the koi pond and the lemon trees. So peaceful and perfect, better than I ever imagined. I sure understand why the owner has chosen to preserve this property. It is truly special.

Beautiful and remote property!

We only stayed two nights but really enjoyed the house. Nice bedrooms, three bathrooms and plenty of room to relax! Lots of outdoor seating and amenities, hot tub, sauna, koi pond and walking paths. Very quiet and safe. Also very easy to find. This home was a good value and we would certainly stay there again!

Like Jurassic Park!

We loved this place - could have spent a few days just on property! My kids loved it - especially my oldest. All the kids asked when we could come back. Location is very close to Volcano National Park and is as advertised. Can't say enough good things - we will definitely come back! Thanks for an amzing adventure!

Volcano Stay

This property is amazing. It is secluded and very private. It was wonderful to wake up every morning to such a beautiful location. Very close to the National Park, only took a few minutes to drive in and see the active volcano. It has all the amenities and more! I would highly recommend this for anyway wanting to visit Hawai'i.

Paradise in the Rain Forest

Beautiful home in private setting. Great outdoor amenities with the sauna, hot tub, koi pond, and outdoor shower! Outdoor deck space would be lovely during a warmer time of year. Bedrooms were comfortable and feeling as if you out in nature with the vast windows. Kitchen was functional but limited utensils making it necessary to run the dishwasher after every meal. The Green Egg grill was nice, but took some effort to use as it is not a common grilling device for most people. Heads up, bring your own charcoal. We had a fabulous visit being so close to Volcano National Park.

Interesting property needing some TLC

We received Brenda’s informational email after we had checked in. The VRBO listing does not disclose that the water is from a rain catchment system. Drinking water is provided via a RO spigot at the kitchen sink, but this did not work. The water pressure became extremely low after our first three days. We would advise you to take short showers as well as consolidate your wash and use the quick cycle. There are no window coverings except for the street side of the house. It was quite bright for sleeping with the full moon and at dawn. In the master bedroom, there are saloon doors blocking the toilet. There was no shower curtain, despite one being shown. They have built-in gas heaters, but no directions on how to use these. Instead, we used electric plug-in heaters; they said one per level would be sufficient. In reality, they need to provide at least two more because it is a BIG house with high ceilings. The gourmet kitchen was missing a vegetable peeler, foil, garlic powder, olive oil, and dish soap. The forest, spa, sauna, koi pond, and decks were the best features of this property. However, the spa water was cloudy and needed treatment. The day we left we discovered mold growing on the mattress in the master bedroom and in the full upstairs bathroom near the shower. To end on a positive note, this property is very close to the national park and several cute art shops. We appreciate that the owner used his wealth to preserve 30 acres of old-growth rain forest.

Easy to find with GPS. Very beautiful house and property, location is amazing, loved the weather, it was cold in the summer, we used heaters and the fireplace. We also used the I’m fire pit for a quick campfire with s’mores, we fed the koi’s in the koi pond daily and enjoyed just looking at them. Lots of trees and some fruit trees. We loved it so much we’re planning on renting it again in the near future. Highly recommended. The only thing I didn’t like was the glass windows in the primary room and glass doors in the dining room didn’t have curtains, it was a little scary at night when you couldn’t see outside and you feel like someone is watching you, same thing with the bathroom in the primary room, it had glass doors and windows around that you can see from the balcony, no curtains, we couldn’t use it, there was no privacy, didn’t want to shower all exposed. Other than that I loved everything about this house.

Over the top Awesome !

This is one of the best and most unique properties I’ve ever stayed at, B &B wise! The place was immaculately clean and had everything and more that you could want. We love the hot tub and sauna, coy pond , location to the park and the old growth trees and the just absolutely fabulous surrounding property. Can’t recommend highly enough If you are visiting volcanoes national Park, you really should stay at this place . We did not want to leave. So beautiful, peaceful, tranquil, and unique.!!!

Hawaiian Old Growth Zen

This property exceeded our expectations and amazed our teenage sons with it's unique merging of house and Hawaiian nature. The house was a short drive from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park entrance, so we were able to go back and forth as needed while we explored the trails. We loved how the house could be completely opened to nature to experience the perfectly relaxing temperatures and breezes typical of this location. The walking trails and level of landscaping care and blending into nature on this property are impressive. If you don't mind being at the end of the road and are craving a very private base camp to explore HVNP, I would highly recommend this location.

Wonderful experience

We've stayed at this property 3-4 times before. The property was excellent as we expected. The bit bonus was that there was an eruption at Volcano Nat'l Park over a 31 hour period during our stay. We were so lucky! And then it was such a pleasure to come home to a beautiful property each evening. Thank you!

Volcano stay

Sorry to be late in responding but soon after I got home I got a very bad case of covid from which I am just now starting to recover. The house is lovely and well-equipped for quite a crowd though we were just two. It's easy access to Volcano National Park made it possible for us to experience an eruption in the middle of the night just before we left. Wow.

Why they chose this property

Volcano Big Tree Sanctuary is a high end ecolodge located just outside Volcano Village, minutes from Hawaii Volcano National Park. Situated in a unique ecosystem at the 4000 foot elevation this private 30 acres estate has giant Koa trees, a green house with a tropical plant collection, Koi pond and a grove of perhaps the largest Ohia trees in the state of Hawaii Some of the Ohia trees may have even been saplings when the first Hawaiians arrived, and today stand over 110 feet high and have a circumference close to 30 feet. (Ohia is the State Tree with red flowers used in the original Hawaiian Leis).
There are beautiful walking trails that winded through 1,000+ year old rainforest that shares a border with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you enjoy birds, this is one of the few places you can stay in Hawaii where you can still see the rare and endangered native Hawaiian forest birds. There is a nesting pair of endangered Hawaiian Hawks on the property, as well as several species of honeycreepers (Apapane, Amakihi, and I'iwi, with occasional visits by a small flock of Akepa) to whose beautiful and mellow songs you will awaken each morning. Nene fly overhead daily, and the Hawaiian Thrush (Omao) sings each evening. The owner has willed the property to the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research to preserve it in perpetuity.
You will experience the magic of Hawaii's rare old growth rainforest in a very personal way while staying in an outstanding deluxe home. .

What makes this property unique

Beautiful. Unique experience!
