Propertyis beautiful and the location is terrific. Everything was comfortable and up to expectations. we did have trouble getting thru the check in process though. No one was responding to us up to the day of arrival. I was in the process of getting a refund from American Express when we finally got thru. Small stuff but there was no bath soap in any of the showers, dead battery in kitchen clock and one of the toilet seats was loose. All in all I would go back again. House is very well built and the custom built furniture was a real joy.
This home is an amazing, beautiful, and artistic place. It absolutely capped our vacation and we wish that our schedule had allowed us to stay here longer.
Overall the property is beautiful we unfortunately had some issues during our stay that will hopefully be remedied. There was an odd smell downstairs that kept my family from fully enjoying the property. We then noticed rodent droppings which may have contributed to the smell. There were also minor issues with use of the tv and lack of instructions.
This place so phenomenal there are no words! By far the best rental we've ever had and we will be back. This location truly made our entire trip worth it. The location is great too in oder to do all things in and around Volcano and Hilo!
Very cool property, rain forest vibes. Good proximity to the park. Super quiet street. Peaceful. Getting in was easy.It does not feel like a full time rental. It feels like you are living in someone's very personal space with the way it's decorated. If you are ok with that, then great, but it keeps me from feeling completely comfortable. The furnishings are also a bit aged and lower quality, which didn't quite live up to the "luxury" listing description for me.
Great location, great vibe, put the electronics down and find some relaxation! Beautiful property, comfortable beds, fresh air, spacious living spaces and easy to get to.
We finished our trip to the big island here and two nights weren’t enough! The tranquility, close proximity to Volcanoes National Park and lovely home and grounds were such a pleasure and exceeded our expectations in every way.
Amazing rental. Beautiful house and property. In hindsight we should have stayed longer vs heading to a different location near Kona and just do Kona day trips. Very clean property and uber relaxing both in terms of inside decoration and outside landscaping. We went into the location knowing there was a small selection of food options in the area so we planned ahead of time and had no issues.
We had visiting guests and were hoping that the volcano would cooperate but thoroughly enjoyed our stay for the weekend anyway. The house was extremely comfortable and well equipped, the grounds were lovely.Hot tub, perfect especially with the misty rain falling.Would definitely stay here again.
This place was amazing! The back yard was the best with the hot tub, outside shower, and sauna! Hot tub had a slight leaking problem but we just kept filling it back up. Really a nice place with everything you need. Would come back for sure!!

Why they chose this property
Volcano Big Tree Sanctuary is a high end ecolodge located just outside Volcano Village, minutes from Hawaii Volcano National Park. Situated in a unique ecosystem at the 4000 foot elevation this private 30 acres estate has giant Koa trees, a green house with a tropical plant collection, Koi pond and a grove of perhaps the largest Ohia trees in the state of Hawaii Some of the Ohia trees may have even been saplings when the first Hawaiians arrived, and today stand over 110 feet high and have a circumference close to 30 feet. (Ohia is the State Tree with red flowers used in the original Hawaiian Leis). There are beautiful walking trails that winded through 1,000+ year old rainforest that shares a border with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you enjoy birds, this is one of the few places you can stay in Hawaii where you can still see the rare and endangered native Hawaiian forest birds. There is a nesting pair of endangered Hawaiian Hawks on the property, as well as several species of honeycreepers (Apapane, Amakihi, and I'iwi, with occasional visits by a small flock of Akepa) to whose beautiful and mellow songs you will awaken each morning. Nene fly overhead daily, and the Hawaiian Thrush (Omao) sings each evening. The owner has willed the property to the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research to preserve it in perpetuity. You will experience the magic of Hawaii's rare old growth rainforest in a very personal way while staying in an outstanding deluxe home. .
