About this property
Renovated and Uncluttered Cabin Near Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge
Sunnyside Cabin in Serene Lakes features a lovely open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area. The large couch is the perfect place to put your feet up and watch a fire in the wood stove after a long day of skiing or snow play. Large windows let the sun in and let you admire a Donner Summit snow storm.
The cabin has two bedrooms on the first floor and an enclosed loft upstairs that makes a great kids room. If the kids want to have a slumber party in the loft there is an additional fold-out double sleeper with extra cushions and blankets behind a fabric curtain.
SmartTV AppleTV+, Netflix, Discovery+, Wi-Fi, deck, and (during the summer) a BBQ. Walking/driving distance to Serene Lakes dock approximately 1/4 mile.

About the host
Hosted by Bill Davies

We are a hiking, paddleboarding, snowshoeing and downhill skiing family from Sacramento, California. Bill grew up in Los Angeles and worked on Sierra Club National Outings for 25+ years before having kids. Now he works for the state of California in Sacramento. Kathleen works in energy R&D for a large public utility. We have a couple of active kids and we spend more time at soccer tournaments than we might like to admit. So we are happy to share this great place in the mountains!
Why they chose this property
This is a wonderful place to stay with the woods and trails right outside the door. Just east of the cabin you can connect to the Forest Service section of the Royal Gorge trails - no pass required on this small section, but if you do get a Royal Gorge pass you can connect to their entire system without getting in your car. We're just 4 miles from all the Donner Summit ski areas (Sugar Bowl, Donner Summit, Soda Springs, Boreal, even closer to Royal Gorge) with daily snow plowing. Just a 1/4 mile to Serene Lakes - an easy walk. It's clean, well-insulated, big windows, and kid-friendly. Wood stove with lots of wood in the shed AND central gas heat as well - toasty warm!
What makes this property unique
We've kept the place clean and uncluttered intentionally - no excessive cabin kitsch! We like the wood stove that puts out LOTS of heat and makes you feel like you're camping. Also great are the slate floor, the high ceilings, the cozy L-shaped couch that the kids love to sleep on, the big windows in the front, both out to the deck and the upper ones above them. There are covers over the windows in the winter to prevent breakage from the snow build up, but the high upper windows (and the holes we drilled into the covers!) mean it is always bright inside. A great place to hang out day or night!
