About this property
Stunning Stone Barn with Gallery Bedroom, Shared Swimming Pool & Games Barn
Le Chai is one of a cluster of 4 character gites with bags of charm at La Fermette France in the sunny Poitou Charentes area of south west France. The gites share a 10m x 5m swimming, a Games Barn and a Leisure field with Boules pitch and plenty of space for a socially distanced holiday.
Originally the old wine store for the farm, Le Chai has exposed stone walls and a high ceiling. The gallery landing bedroom is accessed by a spiral staircase (not suitable for children under 3 years old). The dining table and breakfast bar are two great pieces of upcycled furniture which help give Le Chai it's unique feel. Wine barrels provide storage.
The well equipped kitchen has a washing machine, microwave, toaster, gas hob, electric oven, and fridge freezer.
In addition to the settee are 2 comfortable tub chairs in front of the TV so that you can relax and keep up with UK TV (Freeview channels)....... but we reckon you will be too busy with visiting the local markets and cooking your finds; going to the coast; sightseeing in La Rochelle, Saintes, Cognac and Bordeaux; visiting local wine and cognac producers; cycling around the lanes and watching the local wildlife; or just simply relaxing by the pool!
The spectacular gallery landing has a very comfortable king size bed & a small single bed (1.75m x 77cm) plus a shower room.
Outside is a gravelled courtyard with charcoal BBQ. As it's south facing it's a real sun trap and ideal for enjoying those BBQ's sipping a glass of local wine. From a door at the rear of the gite, you also have direct access to the leisure field where you can play on the boules pitch or enjoy the beautiful sunsets across the the fields. The Games Barn next door has a selection of bikes to explore the country lanes or to cycle the 2km to St Genis to collect the croissants and baguettes for breakfast. In addition to table tennis and table football, the Games Barn also has body boards, boules sets, plus buckets and spades for the beach to bring out the inner child in you - we'll also provide you with a beach umbrella....... and of course there's the 10m x 5m swimming pool which is open from June to September (weather dependant).
Please note that we are flexible with changeover days so that you can take advantage of cheaper midweek air and ferry fares. You just need to stay a minimum of 2 nights

About the host
Hosted by Lesley Houareau

We are Lesley & Felix Houareau. We live in a village just outside Bath but are lucky enough to be able to spend our summers in France. We feel very lucky that we can split our time between a beautiful part of the UK and the Charente Maritime in France with it's historic towns, pretty ports of the Gironde estuary and great beaches.
Why they chose this property
We looked for a region with good weather but easier to travel to than the South of France. The Charente Maritime is the 2nd sunniest region of France and a hidden gem known about by the French. Lots of great beaches to choose from and great local markets and rolling countryside with towns and villages with lots of character.
We are in a peaceful hamlet 2.5km from the nearest town but surrounded by fields of sunflowers, wheat and vines and lots of local wildlife. The myriad of lanes around our gites are great to explore by foot or bike (we have a selection of bikes on hand). We are close to the Bordeaux / Blaye wine region as well being able to buy the best Cognac locally, and only 30 minutes to the beach. Wine, good food, sun and beaches - what more could you want?

What makes this property unique
We love the space that we have in Le Chai and the original features that give the gite it's character. The location is rural but not remote as the nearest town is only 2.5 kms away - close enough to cycle to the boulangerie
