It was a great location and a perfect little cottage! So great to just walk outside and walk along old lava flow, watch the sunrise, and look for orchids. Book this place! You won’t regret it!
Clean, beautifully decorated cottage, secluded and serene, full kitchen, which made preparing meals easy. Nice laundry room, just steps away from my door. And such a gorgeous location, right next to a lava field and a 5 minute walk across to view the ocean. Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for seclusion and beauty.
Perfect location to unwind. Far enough from closest town to decompress. In the evenings the local habitat starts their songs with the ocean waves in the background. Mornings start with the roosters. The lava flows behind the property are amazing. Watching the sunrise on the shore area is a must. Bring proper foot attire. 10/10 Will visit again!
We loved our stay! When we arrived it was dark so it was not until morning that we saw the beautiful setting! It was amazing…even better than the photos! The cottage was also absolutely perfect!
It was a beautiful remote spot which we loved. The ocean was a short walk away across the lava field that we enjoyed exploring. The rental was very nice inside with a comfortable bed. The other rentals are only yards away from the one we were staying in and on our last night, they left their outside lights on all night and shined in the windows even with the drapes closed. Not a huge issue just a little annoying since we are used to living in a remote area without a lot of outdoor lights. This is a beautiful remote spot away from the hustle and bustle of town.
We wanted to visit the area around Kalapana and Pahoa as well as the national park. The cottage also close to Hilo for side trips. We enjoyed our stay here.
The rental was spotless, and everything was well thought out. Instructions to the property were clear (we arrived at night and had no problem finding the house). We thoroughly enjoyed our time there, wish it could have been longer.
This is the cutest little cottage literally steps away from lava. It was a nice get away from Oahu all the hustle and bustle. We were able to drive to a black sand beach green sand beach and see the lava flowing at night in the National park. We loved the location and the spot.
I loved this little ohana by the lava. For just me it had everything I needed. I stay in a lot of vacation rentals & this one was one of the nicer ones, by far. I'll be coming back here.

Both the shower head and the coffee pot were replaced within 24 hours of learning about them. We strive to provide the most comfortable and pleasant accommodations for all of our guests.
Nice unit in a peaceful area off the beaten path. Basic kitchen setup but enough for simple meals. Only thing not clear on the listing is that there is a larger rental unit that boxes the unit in.

For your convenience, Cottage at the Ocean has a wet bar for coffee and tea, and refrigeration. We also have a gas BBQ. I can help you to arrange for local caterers who would love to offer you their private chef skills, for a variety of diets, and they will deliver to you! There are restaurant options in Pahoa, Kea'au and Hilo, as well as numerous fresh foods at the local Farmer's Markets.
Aloha Isabelle ,
Thank you for being an exceptional guest during your stay at Cottage at the Ocean and for your review. It helps to keep our small business thriving and hosting more people in this beautiful space that is so dear to me.
E kipa mai (come visit) again! Until then, please keep all of the Aloha you experienced in Hawaii close to your heart!

Word of caution!! Follow the directions to the location you get from email. They are written explicitly for a reason ( I didn’t and used gps and ended up in wrong area) This is a place of Zen, has Wi-Fi but does not have TV. Sunrise is so beautiful!

Please follow the directions provided! Our rural area does not have reliable GPS.
NO TV! There is very good wifi if you have a personal device!
See you in paradise ~
Truly a delightful experience. I was having work done on my home, so we stayed here for two weeks of fun! It was tranquil, clean, comfortable. A nice bathtub with plenty of toiletries. You may not see it in the pics, but they provide all the kitchen appliances/flatware you might need. Lots of lush greenery right up against the lava rock fields right up against the ocean. Plenty to explore. The WiFi was awesome. We were able to run both our VR headsets at the same time, I was able to work from home when I needed to, did some Xbox gaming (Brought our own electronics). Very private - from check in to check out. Laundry room is right outside the kitchen door, conveniently. The air conditioning is really, really, really good. All the furniture is very sturdy! Lots of fun beach stuff provided too (pool noodles, chairs, sun hat, etc.). I am packing now & happy to go home, but this was just perfect.
Dear Sweetest Cottage by the Sea,
You were exactly what I needed. Prior to my stay, I was feeling overworked and burnt out on life. I was really hoping for a healing space that was not only lovely and peaceful, but also had the comforts of home. You were all that and more. I felt safe, at peace, and the loving mana (energy) of your sweet space. I was able to catch up on some much needed rest. I also found solace and renewed perspective on my daily walks on the lava fields along the ocean in your backyard. I also loved exploring the area that runs along the coast that you sit upon. I felt rejuvenated and ready to tackle the world upon leaving. I am so grateful that you were my oasis for a week. Mahalo for your tranquil, nurturing embrace. I will be back.

Aloha Donna,
It was a pleasure to host you and I so look forward to that opportunity when you feel the call to return!
I have always found early morning sunrise walks and the late afternoon sunset walks offer so much reflection and a deep reset of my mind and spirit.
This is a lovely place to stay! Nice layout, well put together, and just a really lovely and calming space.
There is another house on the property but it's pretty private - just don't walk into the living room/kitchen naked (or close the curtains before you do!)
Not-so-connected to the rest of the island since many of the connecting roads were blocked by lava in previous years' eruptions. This is a bug or a feature depending on what you're looking for. We very much enjoyed exploring the lava and the Red Road, and venturing up to Hilo and Volcano for further adventures.
The frogs are loud at night but I found it soothing. My partner needed earplugs and was fine. There was also a wind storm and afterwards the frog chorus diminished A LOT. I felt bad for the possibly-squished frogs, but clearly the sound level can vary quite a bit.
The place was a little hard to find at night, I'd been following instructions on the app and they were thorough but telephone poles were hard to see in the dark. However I later realized Rachaelle had also attached GPS coordinates to a message so that's totally my fault. The combination of the two should be more than enough to find your way there.
Also go get an acai bowl at the smoothie shack 10 minutes walk down the road, they're so good!

Thank you Kathryn! It was a pleasure to host you.
We are off the beaten path, Iand depending on the conditions of your arrival, it can be challenging, so I do my best to give guests options for directions. In addition to the detailed directions and GPS coordinates I provide, I also send "pins" via text message and this can be very helpful. Be sure to request this from me!

This was a beautiful beach cottage. Very quiet and private area. I think the directions given by the owners is very confusing when your coming in at night and you are not a local. The GPS cordidantes from the owner are not true to where the property is. There are not any street lights to help you either. The private drive into the neighborhood is a dirt road that looks like someone's private drive way. We found hairs around the house and in the shower. The induction stovetop that was provided- did not work (also doesn't actually fit anywhere to cook with it)
We were highly inconvenienced to drive to the nearest walmart 45 minutes away early in the morning to feed our child. There is nothing close to this property as far as food and groceries go.
The property itself is abundant with wildlife, Lava and the beach but there isn't a good swim beach near this location.
It was a nice put together property.
They provided 2 shower towels when we had 3 guests.
I would recommend to check appliances before new guests arrive.
I bought a cooking appliance and obviously couldn't take it back on my travels.
I wouldn't stay here again just due to how far everything is from this location and being inconvenienced.
But if you're looking to stay at the cottage and not go to the beach much or exploring- this is your place.
The nearest town Hilo- is dirty and the water is not in good condition
Nous avons adoré notre séjour! L’endroit est réellement super (tout est là) et l’océan est à moins d’une minute de marche dans la cour arrière avec une vue imprenable. Le lever du soleil sur le champs de lave et l’océan resteront dans nos mémoires.

"We loved our stay! The place is actually great (everything is there) and the ocean is less than a minute's walk away in the backyard with amazing views. The sunrise over the lava field and the ocean will remain in our memories."
The place was very clean, beautifully decorated, and looked exactly like the pictures. It was a little difficult to find but the host was very responsive and helped us with that. She put a lot of work into her booklet with recommendations. The property is right on the beach with lava field and is gorgeous. Would definitely come again.

About the host
Hosted by Rachaelle
I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena the moment of my arrival in 2004! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the traditional Hawaiian lifestyle. The people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. I fell in love with this property in ’05 and purchased it with the idea of creating a sanctuary to grow old in. Prior to my ownership, this property was a part of a Buddist’s Meditation Center and it was direct oceanfront. In 1992 the lava flow preserved this property yet swept along the shoreline, taking out the beaches and forming the lava flats we now enjoy and making new beaches. This newly created land now belongs to the state. I saw myself living at this property forever, so I renovated it for 2 years. It is my pleasure to share it with visitors who wish for a unique Hawaiian experience in a rural, beautiful, and wild setting! Living on an active volcano on the 2nd largest mountain on the planet (next to Mauna Kea, the other volcano of Big Island) has its benefits…there is magnetic energy here that many feel to be “Supercharged”, lending itself to the dynamic and creative spirits of our community members.
Why they chose this property
Kaimu enjoys the best weather on the island, according to most Hawaiians. More Hawaiians lived here than in any other location! Balmy nights, and 45' of rain each year, with sunshine filled days. I fell in love with Kalapana/Kehena 20 minutes after my arrival! I have been all over the state, and have found no other place to be so close to the ways of old Hawaiian Living… the people of this community are happy and friendly and the way of life is still relaxed and laid back. We are conveniently located close enough to Hilo, the Hamakua Coast and Volcano National Park. The Saddle Road will bring you to Kona in just under 2 hours.
What makes this property unique
A natural setting as dramatic as that which Cottage at the Ocean enjoys is rare. The energy of the active volcano, and our location next to the Pacific Ocean, with miles upon miles of wild coastline to hike is truly invigorating. Walks along the coastal bluffs directly will give you the experience of what Hawaii was like long ago. It is wild, rural, beautiful, and sensual, filling you with Hawaii's Techni-Color palette of vivid ocean and sky blues, white puffy clouds, bright greens of the variety of vegetation, and the sound of the crashing waves you hear all day and all night. At night, you will be in awe at the number and brightness of the star-lite skies!
