Cozy cottage close to campus

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It was cozy, well appointed, and we enjoyed sitting on the back deck. The location was perfect for seeing our daughter on campus and exploring the proctor area. Our hosts were delightful and helpful. It’s a trip we won’t soon forget.

Sweet cozy cottage in the heart of Proctor

I couldn't rave more about the location of this cottage--walking distance to great restaurants and shopping. But equally private and quiet in the cottage/neighborhood. I loved it and would definitely stay again.

Perfect stay

This place was perfect for me, my husband and our 26 yr. old son. I grew up in the area and we were back for a memorial service. Great place, great neighborhood. Able to walk to many shops, restaurants, etc. Deck was really nice. The hosts were great to work with, very helpful. Would definitely stay here again!

What a gem!

My husband, son, and I rented this cottage for a week while visiting family in the area. It was perfect for us. The location was great for our day trips to Seattle, Tacoma, and Gig Harbor. It’s well-kept, very clean, and in a nice, quiet neighborhood. There are restaurants, shops, and food stores all in walking distance. Outdoor deck area and gated driveway parking is a big plus. Owners are very nice and very accommodating. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely rent this property again.

Comfortable cottage in lovely neighborhood!

We had such a nice time staying at the Thistledown Cottage. It was such a perfect home base for our family weekend. We told our 3 year old that the TV was just for decoration...hehe. That way we could have more time to explore the neighborhood and read books! Danny and Teres were such thoughtful and gracious hosts. Thank you for a fantastic weekend, and we hope to be back for a longer stay soon!

Comfortable, Cozy & Quiet

Enjoyed our 3-day stay. Here’s our list Pros & Cons (we’ll start with the Cons because we want to end on a positive note): Con 1: master suite located upstairs; bathroom located downstairs. Con 2: stairs are narrow; use caution when navigating them in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. Pro 1: Location. Pro 2: Property owner lives next door. Pro 3: The backyard deck (hands down) compensated for the two Cons! Pro 4: The bed upstairs in the master was comfortable. Pro 5: The location was safe & quiet Pro 6: And, the personalized message left by the owners was welcoming.

Once you take off your shoes at the front hall you'll be charmed out of your socks.

It's cute as can be, and romantic too, but not cutesy. A touch of whimsy and a whiff of the old seafaring days. Because this is the real deal, an old Tacoma cottage, built in 1907 with timbers from the Croatian shipyards on Puget Sound, if I remember correctly a conversation with the owner. So it's got historic cred along with charm. And boy, does it ever have charm. But let's start with the neighborhood, with the heart of Proctor and Metro Market a few blocks away. Even closer in the other direction is the Puget Creek Natural Area, which leads in turn to Ruston Way and the waterfront. A longish walk takes you along Puget Sound to Old Town and then up the grade on stately old 30th Street. If it's cold, you stop by Northern Fish on the waterfront for a bowl of chowder. Yum. The cottage is snug to be sure, but the second-story bedroom has its own sitting area which doubles as a third bed - plenty of room up there. And it's either the bed or the rainy fall climate but you'll fall asleep in moments, it's so comfortable. The owners have thought of everything in stocking and furnishing the house. You need something, it'll be there. And it's been decorated throughout with an understated elegance - an artist's touch, really - that further elevates the stay. One thing to reckon with is the heating. Baseboard heaters and they take awhile to get going. The house was cold when we arrived, and it took a long time to warm it up. Then once it got toasty, it stayed that way. It just takes some patience and a little fiddling with the heater controls. The owners live next door in a lovely house that's even older than the cottage. We love our privacy and didn't know what to think about this situation at first. But meeting Danny immediately dispelled any awkwardness. Charming as his cottage and considerate and unintrusive too, his stories about the house and the neighborhood rounded out the pleasure of our stay. Rent this cottage and you will have sweet dreams, and some will maybe be of the Gilded Age or of the seafarers from an old novel.

We are repeat customers at Thistledown Cottage and can’t express enough how much we enjoy it. The owners, Danny and Teres are fantastic hosts and alway communicate perfectly. We visit from Massachusetts to attend events at the University of Puget Sound and consider this cottage as our home away from home.

Love Thistledown Cottage!

We had a wonderful stay at this cute cottage. It was very clean, well appointed and the hosts are personable and responsive. It is walkable to the Proctor District, which has many restaurants, shops and breweries, as well as very close to a small park and walking trail. We made great use of the lovely deck in the back, which has a table large enough for 6. We would stay there again!

Wonderful cottage!

We really enjoyed this lovely cottage and our hosts were so considerate and welcoming when we arrived. Everything we could have needed was there and the furnishings were very comfortable. We were visiting family in the proctor area so this location was very convenient. A very short walk to the market and shops. We would definitely book again!

Pretty Proctor Cottage

We had such a wonderful warm welcome as we stepped out of the car upon arrival! The cottage was lovely and comfortable. And so convenient to restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores. We walked every day and questioned whether we really needed a rental car during our stay! It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and we will return.

About the host

Hosted by Daniel Millar

Host profile image
Owners, Danny & Teres, are a Scottish / American couple who are teachers (retired), visual artists and savvy travelers. We have created a space that we, ourselves, would enjoy staying in while away from home.

Why they chose this property

This cottage is next door to our 1904 family residence. We bought the house, built in 1908, to create a guest house for friends, family and visitors to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We have preserved the integrity of this post Victorian cottage, while adding modern comforts.

What makes this property unique

Our North End neighborhood is a very desirable area of Tacoma. Our location is quiet and safe, yet only minutes away from the vibrant Proctor District and also the University of Puget Sound. It is perfect for UPS' Parents Weekends, graduations etc. It is an ideal spot for those traveling on business.
It is centrally located to explore the Seattle / Tacoma area, ski slopes, Puget Sound and Pacific Ocean beaches, waterways and islands. All can be day trips.
Tacoma is in the midst of a cultural revival as found in such places as the Tacoma Art Museum, Museum of International Glass, the Washington State Historical Museum and the LeMay Car Museum.
Cottage is ideally located for golfers wishing to play Chambers Bay, home of the 2015 US Open.
