Luxury Mountain Villa With Stunning Pacific View

'Villa de las Mariposas' is a stunning villa overlooking the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica near Ojochal. The home features luxury amenities inside and out! The home has approximately 180 sq. meters of indoor living area and 180 sq. meters of terrace.

Fully air conditioned bedrooms, private pool and hot tub.

The spacious and airy great room, dining room, and bedrooms have doors that completely open to the terrace and pool area allowing pacific breezes to cool the home. The tropical furniture was custom made with the finest craftsmanship.

The kitchen has the most modern appliances and cookware. Granite countertops throughout with high counter and bar stools. The indoor dining table seats eight.

Outside, you can relax around the pool, swim or soak in the spa. The gazebo features a BBQ grill, sink, beverage refrigerator and a lounge seating area.

One side of the great room features the master bedroom suite with queen bed, large walk-in shower, dual sinks and walk-in closet.
The guest side of the home has two roomy bedrooms each with a queen bed and closet space. The guest bedrooms share a common bathroom with shower.

The house is very secluded amongst the tropics. On the property we grow a garden of coffee, banana and various fruit trees, and pineapples. Other tropical trees you can find throughout the property are: coconut, banana, coffee, mango, lemon, tangerine, orange, avocado, and papaya.

We have tried to make your travel as easy as possible by providing some items included for your use: boogie boards, various pool floats, coolers, massage table, yoga mats, and exercise ball. There are also two twin size air mattresses available.

Some of the finest restaurants and breweries in southern Costa Rica can be found a short drive from the home.

Outdoor activities abound within a short distance from the house including beaches, surfing, sea kayaking, mangrove and ocean kayaking, zip lining, hiking, birding, waterfalls, ATV tours, and canyoning.

The villa sits 8.1 Km off the main highway up a dirt & gravel road that requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle to access. It can be a very rugged drive depending on the season and the condition of the road. It takes about 20-30 minutes. It is a drive that is well worth it for the views, mountain breezes, wildlife and seclusion.

House was very well equipped. The drive was long but worth it. My only oversight was the air conditioning was not provided in the main living area. On average the living area was 80F to 83F. A little uncomfortably warm for us. Besides that i would definetly reccomed the house if your looking for a remote getway with a well stocked house.

Beautiful location. Well stocked. If you are looking for a location to do daily site seeing this is not the one for you due to the access via a long gravel road but if you want to be in the area for beautiful views and hanging out enjoying the scenery, this is it.

One of the most beautiful views we’ve ever had on a vacation. I didn’t want to leave!! If we come back I will plan it where I don’t need to leave unless I need groceries! We did a couple of excursions that were great but I would’ve preferred staying at the house. So relaxing and peaceful and has everything a person needs! Can’t wait to go back!!

Amazing Mountainside Property

This property is easily among one of our favorite VRBO rentals around the world. The home itself is fantastic- comfortable, well-appointed, and really well-stocked. The outdoor amenities are incredible as well! What truly sets this property apart is the location! The home is perched in beautiful, lush mountainous terrain. The view of the Pacific Ocean and Osa Peninsula are fantastic and the landscaping around the home is natural and gorgeous. This is truly a place to find rest, rejuvenation, and really be in touch with nature. Even after a week I was still in awe.Steve is very responsive and we appreciated his communication. The home feels (and was) very safe and secure.

Absolutely beautiful home with wonderful ocean views. The infinity pool and jacuzzi were really nice to unwind at the end of a day of exploring this wonderful country. The care takers were the nicest couple and flora made the most delightful breakfast every morning. You will absolutely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle for the drive up to the house. Roads are quite steep in places and a little intimidating the first day. The drive up to the house from the main road takes about 25 minutes. We truly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend visiting Costa Rica.

The house and property was something out of a dream book. There's nothing one bit we can say wrong with this home and property. Original booking we were told there would be caretakers on the property that could do such items such as cooking and massages. This doesn't seem to be the case. Getting to the property is a very difficult process to say the least.. But after being in Costa Rica for 2 weeks I realize that is normal. Overall I would come back to this place time and time again. Constant communication with the owners kept me in check at all times with any questions I had about the locals or the towns around me I highly recommend this place

Paradise on a hill!

Beautiful home with a view that you could never tire of. Everything was just perfect, well equipped for all activities and eventualities but the most special mention has to go to Flora and Tono who look after the property. Flora's Costa Rican breakfasts were sublime and she also cooked us a lovely meal one evening. They were both such lovely people and their dogs became our best friends too! This is truly a magical, relaxing place and the only compromise to this is the drive to reach it... definitely not for the faint hearted but worth the effort. Sitting in the jacuzzi watching the sunset with a glass of wine will be etched in my memory forever ❤️

Outstanding Home

We had a marvelous time at this property. The house was incredible. We utilized the heated pool and spa every day. We went during the rainy season, but our weather was really quite good. The road up to the property is a bit of a challenge, but we made it up the first night in two wheel drive. I never used four low. It is slow, bumpy, and has more than a few places to watch out for. Our host was very responsive, and the information about the property and surrounding area was spot on. Flora and Tona are the housekeeper/cook and maintenance person, respectively, were absolutely wonderful. The meals were great. We would most certainly stay at this property again. It was outstanding. I have never left a review in my life, but this property deserves it. This property is the nicest place I have ever stayed on vacation, the house is beautiful, pool and hot tub are great, the grounds are beautiful and the views are fabulous and unforgettable. Flora is a dream and a fabulous cook, her breakfast was something you forward to every morning. April and Steve the owners were great, April was so helpful with information before and during our stay. We have never viewed sunsets like this ever. The hour and a half massages were so relaxing and the best ever. The drive up and down the mountain and thru the jungle was exciting with spectacular views. Jimmy the car rental guy April suggested really took care of us. Costa Rica is a fabulous, exciting and adventurous place to travel to. The country is absolutely beautiful, jungle, waterfalls and wild life. If you are wanting the best vacation of you life, this is the property for you. Breathtaking Views!

The only downside to this property is the drive up. Its not made for all, but absolutely worth it once you get up to the property. Make sure you have a good 4WD car and then totally escape into the mountains with one of the best views we have ever experienced in Costa Rica. The highlight of this property is the hot tub in the evenings as the weather remains nice and cool up in the mountain creating a very comfortable climate to live in. Most rentals we have experienced are not well equipped with dishes and appliances. This one is high end all around and built for anyone that loves cooking. Just bring the food and everything you need can be found in the house. The home Sonos Speaker system is also great to play music in and out of the house. The internet connection was surprisingly very fast considering how secluded the property is. And cell signal was perfect. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to escape and disconnect for a bit!

A beautiful Villa in paradise

It doesn't get better than this! Case De Las Mariposas is truly a remarkable place in the midst of paradise. The house is located on a high elevation overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is surrounded by tropical landscape and mountains. Mornings we could hear howler monkeys. Toucans were perched in the palms eating the berries. Flocks of parrots flew by. Tropical birds were our visitors.The house is stunning. Grand gates open up to a vista of stunning beauty. The property is beautifully landscaped. The house boasts luxury. Inside the panoramic windows show off the view. Every detail has been well thought of. Lovely functioning kitchen, cozy bedrooms, comfortable dining and sitting areas. The outside areas are incredible. This is where we wanted to be all the time. The pool and hot tub give the outdoor space a spa feel. The air felt fresh. The sound of nature was relaxing. The visiting birds were most welcome. Lounging chairs offered poolside relaxation. When the sun got hot, the covered sitting areas provided shade without obstructing the view and natural landscape.This property is unforgettable and will leave a cherished memory of your vacation.The villa is high up on the mountain. Paradise! Just perfect!

Exceeded our expectations! Even more spectacular in person! The owners thought of every last detail on the house and extra amenities they provide. The road to the house is a good 20 minutes up and really rough & steep. We were prepared for this with the 4x4 car, but still surprised how rough it was in person and finding it upon arrival was a real challenge because we second guessed every fork in the road and electricity in the area due to a big storm, so we couldn't see the house in the distance. We would do it again in a heartbeat, because the house at the end and view is worth it! We had originally planned to cook more of our own dinners, but Flora's cooking was so incredible that she ended up cooking for us all but one night. So nice to simply come home with dinner already prepared. Flora and Tono felt like family by the end, as did the outside house dogs, Rocky and Tigre. Google Translate it an amazing thing as our group spoke very minimal Spanish! Once you get to the bottom of the hill, you are on the main road alon the coast so it is easy to get to beaches and excursions. We enjoyed hanging in the pool/hot tub at the house, Playa Ventanas, Playa Ballena (the whale tail park entrance), Osa Canopy zip line, la Perla del sur mangrove tour with James, Manuel Antonio guided tour (book ahead of time!!!), etc. The owners have a thorough list of other excursions and spa services. We can't wait to go back!!!

Week in paradise!!!

What a spectacular place! We had a wonderful time at this most beautiful house. The host was hands down, one of the best in my experience. April was attentive, communicated very quickly, and made some great suggestions. One of her best ones was to consider taking a little puddle jumper flight from San Jose to Quepos and rent your car there. Saves you loads of driving time and gives you a lovely view of the country from the air. We loved it. The house was completely stocked, we could have stayed there the whole time and been very content. We did not want for anything. The pool and hot tub were clean warm, and offered some of the most spectacular views. Most of the restaurants by us were very, very good. The breakfast in the morning was a very nice touch. Flora and Tonni are so sweet and helpful. It was a nice feeling knowing they were near by. We went horseback riding, hiking, and did a really fun tour of Sierpe Mangoves and a great visit (up another long mountain drive) with the Boruca village and it's lovely people. Very interesting. On our last day, we had massages on the porch and it was heavenly. All in all, a fabulous trip. One note, not gonna lie, the road up on day 1 was a white knuckle experience. Don't worry - you will make it! And much of Costa Rica's treasures are up a crazy drives, so you get used to it pretty quick. 10 out of 10! Thank you April and Steve.

Prior to our Stay at Villa de las Mariposa we stayed at a home north of Dominical several times. The owners of that home decided to retire an we were forced to find another home to rent. We did not think that we would find another that would compare. When we found Villa de las Mariposa we hit the JACKPOT! From the moment of booking April was attentive and provided valuable information about the house and the surrounding area. It was a treat to be able to lean on the knowledge and experiences April has gained, we were not disappointed with any of the recommendations. This property is stunning! Fantastic architectural features, brilliantly decorated, and very well equipped. April and Steve could not have done a finer job! I am convinced that they chose THE BEST property on the mountain! It boasts a beautiful view of the coastline, beautiful ocean breezes, amazing views of the jungle, and stunning sunset every night. The jungle noises are entertaining and unlike anything you will experience elsewhere. The home is incredible, we wanted for nothing, except more time! Flora and Tono take wonderful care not just of the property but also of its guests. With a wonderful smile Flora provided a fantastic breakfast for us every morning. For a nominal fee Flora prepared several meals for us, dinner the day that we arrived and a few other evenings on days we were out exploring, this was a great experience. Memorable Stay!

Our group of 2 adults and 3 teenagers vacationed at this property for 9 days in April. Upon arrival, we were highly impressed with the accommodations and the breathtaking view! Once you walk through the front door both the mountains and the South Pacific are incredible. The open-air setup allows for panoramic views. The property is very secluded, you do not see or hear any of your neighbors. All of the provided amenities, especially the pool, hot tub, cabana and grill were used on a daily basis. The inside was decorated first class, with 3 more than comfortable bedrooms with air conditioning that allowed for a great night sleep! The kitchen was fully equipped with top end appliances and a fridge filled with some snacks upon our arrival. One of the biggest perks of staying at this property is the pleasant visits of both Flora & Tono (Rocky and Tigre too)! Each morning at 8:00am sharp, Flora would create a delicious Costa Rican breakfast to include eggs, rice & beans, proteins and fresh fruit! Each day was such a treat to wake up to the delicious smells and warm smile of Flora. All the while, Tono would tend to cleaning both the pool and hot tub and maintain landscaping, roughly finishing all task for the day in about and hour and a half. By the end of the week, they became extended family. Only wish we could bring them back with us! We took advantage of several expeditions, recommended both by April and Steve. All of the expeditions and restaurant suggestions are clearly stated in the welcome book provided at the house. April's knowledge of renting a car and best places to buy both groceries and beverages were extremely helpful. The ride up to the property is about a 25 minute beautiful and exciting ride. Take your time and enjoy the beauty, the roads are not paved and prove to be quite bumpy and adventurous. Overall, we would highly recommend staying at this property. Steve and April were both extremely accommodating and informative throughout the entirety of our trip.

Spectacular View and All the Comforts of Home

The steep trip up the mountain in our rented 4x4 was worth it as we found ourselves in a luxurious and comfy home with likely one of the most spectacular views in the area of Ojochal. Steve and April were quick to get back to us with any concerns or questions when booking and planning our trip. April went above and beyond with sending us pics of the road up to the home as I was concerned about finding the place arriving at night. Once there (which wasn’t difficult to find) Flora and Toño made our stay comfortable and homey with full hearty breakfasts each morning and kept the home comfortably clean and organized. They too answered any questions we had via google translate. As you can imagine, we spent most of our time outside on excursions or around the luxurious poolside that included a hot tub for the cooler nights and cabana with BBQ etc for outdoor dining. Not that we needed a BBQ being minutes to Ojochal - the known foodie area of Costa Rica with a plethora of exceptional restaurants. At approx 2000’ above sea level we were comfortable enough not to need air conditioning, however they had it if we wanted it. The only thing I wish we had was screens to keep the doors and windows open at night as the cool breeze was lovely and i much prefer it over air conditioning. The power went out once during our seven day stay, but within seconds their backup generator came on, leaving the cityscape dark while our lights and amenities remained fully functioning. Although the birds, small lizards and butterflies were plentiful, we didn’t see much else, likely due to all the dogs in the area, barking at anything that would come near the property. Even though we loved the dogs, this could be a deterrent if you you don’t. If you are planning a trip to the quiet South Pacific area of Costa Rica where flora and fauna abound and want an incredible view and luxurious home with large pool area you should definitely check this home out. Would I stay at this place again? - in a heartbeat.

Anniversary Getaway

AMAZING!! My wife and I booked this for our 30th anniversary. You definitely need a good 4X4 to get here but don't let that intimidate you. We were greeted at the door by Flora and Tono who look after the property and will help you with anything. As you enter the house, you look out the back, over the hot tub and infinity pool and into sky as far as the Pacific Ocean. When you walk through you realize that you're 2100 feet above sea level and you look down into lush green valleys all the way to the shore. The house is well appointed with everything you need and the sound system is a definite bonus. We would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a private escape or even with a few friends.

Maravilloso!

This is an incredible villa which has everything you could possibly want for an amazing holiday. The caretakers, Flora and Toño are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Flora’s Costa Rican breakfast is extremely delicious, it’s such a treat to wake up to. This was our third family trip to Costa Rica and our third stay in Casa de las Mariposas. For us, the villa itself along with its seriously unbeatable views of forest and ocean are perfect. Evenings of watching the glorious sunset from the infinity pool are simply dreamy. We all consider ourselves so lucky to have been able to have precious family time here. Our first family holiday, post pandemic and it was a great one! Thank you so much Steve and April for providing a great info pack on the area and for responding to my queries speedily.

Over 10 years ago, Steve went on a hunt for the perfect location to build his dream vacation home in Costa Rica. Upon finding this land with the unmatched view, he knew this was the location he had been searching for.
The building plans were created entirely by Steve, whereas the decor and art work was completed by April.

Why they chose this property

The views of the pacific ocean are truly special. The home is very secluded and surrounded by tropical forest and wildlife including monkeys, parrots, toucans, anteaters and the occasional sloth.

The eight kilometer drive from the coastal highway takes about 25 minutes and requires four wheel drive most times of the year. Due to the amazingly scenic drive down the mountain, it requires about 30 minutes to get to the nearest beaches and restaurants.

What makes this property unique

We really enjoy being away from it all, with all the conveniences of home. You feel like you have really gotten away from it all, without having to rough it, and we love that. We have set the house with all the luxurious comforts we personally would choose to have, and hope you find this to be true for yourselves. In example: Best of quality sheets and towel, wine glasses made of crystal, heavy and thick drinking glasses....all of the little things that make all the difference.
