The Hemlock Cottage just got a complete makeover in May 2020! It is within steps of the river, and has a very unique feel to it. When we started the remodel, we found original cedar logs behind the paneling. The cottage was originally built in the 40's using local cedar. We restored the old logs and made them a center piece. The layout is small, but spacious for it's size and easily accommodates our guests. It is perfect for couples!! The kitchen is fully stocked and there's seating for 3 at the dining bar. There is A/C, WiFi, and a 43" TV with internet streaming service. The bedroom has a nice queen pillow-top mattress. The kitchen is very spacious for such a small space. there is plenty of counter top and the old original sink from the 50's is still in use. The nice new deck outside is perfect for a relaxing view of the river and general lounging.
The AuTrain River provides excellent swimming, and canoeing/kayaking as it winds 12 miles through the Hiawatha National Forest. Further down river puts you into Lake Superior and quite possibly the best beach on all of Lake Superior. Up river is the beautiful AuTrain Lake which provides a wonderful place to enjoy water sports, fishing or just a relaxing cruise. Bass, Walleye or Pike are your most commonly fished.
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located in Munising is only 15 minutes away and there are over a dozen waterfalls within a 30 mile radius. The National Lakeshore provides days worth of outdoor activities. If you are into fishing, Trout and Salmon are the most commonly fished in Lake Superior.
I have seen nearly everything in this area and am a great resource during your stay. I will meet with you after you arrive and give you advice about the area and things you can enjoy during your vacation.

The property is older, but clean. It's an old cabin, so there is a musty smell. The bed was very comfortable. The water pressure was low, but again it's expected with many older builds
It was the perfect, quaint little getaway for a winter weekend snowmobiling. Easy access to the trails. Has the right amount of amenities to come back to for being gone on the trails all day. Highly recommend!
The cabin itself was very clean, cozy and well thought out. The Vacation Information Binder was incredibly helpful and led to a very enjoyable stay in the area. The info about the neighboring falls was particularly useful.
The perfect place to stay and explore the surrounding areas! Very clean and the host was excellent with communicating with! Very happy it was pup friendly as well! I will return again sometime!
This is our favorite cabin with all the cuteness and comfort you need. Love the area and things to do.

We enjoyed our stay here quite a bit. It's a cozy little place with plenty to do nearby. Pet friendly is a big deal for us so being able to bring our dog is a huge plus.
Nice stay in a beautiful area. Everything was seamless from booking to check out. Not a fancy place but a very nice peaceful stay.

Plain and simply, I am a Yooper. I live locally year round and am a wealth of knowledge when it comes to exploring our area. I graduated high school and college here and I am an avid outdoors-man, I camp, hike, bike, kayak, ski, snowshoe, ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile and Jeep nearly the entire U.P. and if you have heard of it, chances are I've been there, or done that. I also know some places 'slightly off the radar' if you are looking to get away from the tourist areas. Just ask, I'll be happy to give you advice.
Why they chose this property
I was a transplant to this area during high school years ago and left then came back. I couldn't stay away forever, this area is unlike any other. Sure there are beautiful places all over the country, but no matter where you are from, this place is special beyond words... This cottage is part of a private association with it's own river frontage. The property is the best on the river, it has a beautiful view, clean water with sandy bottom and plenty of space to relax. There are 10 cottages on this property (it was an old resort) I own/manage 7 of them for vacation rentals. I purchased these cottages with the intention of providing people a great place to stay, and the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful area. Overall, if someone doesn't enjoy staying here, it would be a first.
What makes this property unique
It is within 2 minutes of Lake Superior, one of the best beaches in all of Michigan, 15 minutes from Munising and the Pictured Rocks, dozens of waterfalls, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, biking trails and ATV/snowmobiling trails.(all available right from the cottage doorstep). AuTrain lake is accessible by boat right from the cottages and has tons of recreational opportunities.
