About this property

Quintessential Island Getaway on Orcas Island. Gorgeous view! Starting at $199

Maggie's Getaway, one of the quintessential San Juan Islands vacation rentals, on Orcas Island is a sunny, gracious two bedroom waterfront family vacation home surrounded by spectacular views of Deer Harbor. Large 400 square ft. kitchen very well stocked. Large hot tub right off the front porch, with a magnificent water view! There is even a piano for you to use in the spacious living room.
Maggie's Getaway can accommodate up to 4 guests including children; however, there are two additional bedrooms in this house and a second bathroom upstairs which can be rented if a group needs more space. Otherwise, there is no one else in upper floor bedrooms. Maggie's Getaway has a two night minimum other than during the Peak Seasons, when there is a 3 night minimum stay. When larger groups rent the whole house, there is always a 3 night minimum stay

Step out onto the welcoming front porch or into the command view outdoor Spa, where you can relax and look at your own picture postcard vistas of the smaller San Juan Islands and the snow-capped Olympic Mountains in the distance or at night gaze at myriad of stars in the sky and the twinkling anchor lights of the boats at rest in Deer Harbor.

Maggie's Getaway sits high above our private 300' wide deep water Deer Harbor shoreline on 3 ½ acres with ample manicured lawns. Soak in the sun, clean air, and sweeping views from the bird-filled gardens. Keep toasty around the outdoor campfire while watching for Northern Lights under the star-filled sky at night. Hike through our private 110 acre wildlife preserve and wild natural organic farm at the heart of Deer Harbor and look for Great Blue Heron, Bald and Golden Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, Osprey, River Otters, Raccoons, Black Tailed Deer, and a host of other San Juan Islands wildlife. A birders’ delight!

With this Orcas Island accommodation you may actually want to prepare your own meals. Whether you like to cook your own crab, barbeque your own salmon, steaks or like to cook hot dogs over the open fire you will like the west side of Maggie's outdoor cooking area and campfire pit. Perhaps you are preparing an anniversary dinner or hosting a small party or wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. There is enough room in our kitchen for many cooks and helpers. With four sinks spread over three separate areas there is plenty room to prepare a festive gourmet meal. Serve on the east deck, the west yard picnic area, or the dining room all with spectacular water views.

The Deer Harbor area of Orcas Island enjoys some of the nicest weather these 'banana belt' San Juan Islands offer---lots of sun and little rainfall! Sunny Deer Harbor is a hub of San Juan Islands marine activity, with fishing, whale-watching for Orca and Minke whales, sea kayaking, boat rentals and sailing charters available, as well as moorage facilities for your own boat.

Property in disrepair, unsafe, and very dirty
The house, deck, and hot tub are in very bad shape. The paint is peeling inside and out, and it reeks of dog urine. There were holes in the walls and visible damage throughout. There was one smoke detector in the back of the house and evidence where others existed but had been removed. The doors had no real locks just slide latches at the top of the exterior doors. We had some trouble getting a couple of these open, which would be a serious problem in an emergency. There were no curtains in the main part of the house, so there was no privacy. The house was very grimey, covered in cobwebs, and had visible mouse droppings in the bathroom, kitchen, and everywhere in the basement. There were stains all over the bathroom walls, mold growing in the tub and in many corners of the house. The kitchen shelves were covered in grease from cooking and not being cleaned. Hair and dirt in the silverware drawers. The hot tub had a lot of debris in it, including sand, paint chips and pieces of the cover that flaked off. There was a bottle of bleach next to the hot tub and the house instructions indicated that you should pour bleach in if you want to use it. Based on how the tub looked it seems the only cleaning it gets is when bleach is dumped in. We left a day early because we felt too uncomfortable. The house instructions upon check out were to remove the bed sheets and we found the mattress covered in disgusting stains. I would not recommend staying here it is filthy and unsafe.

Fire Safety and Health Concerns - I have pictures if you want them
No smoke or carbon monoxide alarms, you can see where there supposed to be but were not installed. The electricity failed a couple times, had to flip the breaker for no reason. Mold present. The ceiling shows evidence of water and structural issues from rain. They nailed a canvass over it to hide damage. DIRTY. The walls in bathroom had toothpaste splatters on the walls. The kitchen cupboards were filthy with foot splatter on them. Cobwebs everywhere. Live spiders in bathroom - HUGE one. Bedroom hole in wall covered by tape and piece of paper, ugh. No privacy, there are no curtains on any of the windows so you are on display to everyone. They live right above the house so its like living in a fish bowl. The hot tub was dirty and just had a bucket of bleach sitting next to it. They tell you everything has been cleaned and sanatized prior to arrival but it was not. They give you a laundry list of requirements prior to arrival and departure....its a novel to read and is all a disclaimer stating the place has quirks, but that information is not listed on their VBRO website listing. It was advertised as 3 bedrooms, but really only has three beds. 2 bedrooms available, but you would need to pay additional to have access to the upstairs for more rooms. Only one of the door locks worked and none of the windows locked properly. The only "security" you had was when you where there you could use a small slide bolt. They did not disclose their dogs would be loose. BS

Waiting to-reschedule
We have yet to make it to this spot! We had to cancel at the last moment and Meg offered over the phone to allow us to re-book this February, using the credit from our canceled trip. However, we haven't heard back yet, and would like to proceed with this offer and check out this lovely looking spot. Please email, Meg! Thank you.

About the host

Hosted by Meg and Bob Connor

Host profile image
We have lived full time on Orcas Island since 1975, raising three sons, who are now married with children who love to visit their grand-parents. We have been happily married for 54 years!

We moved up here with a down payment and no jobs and over the years have done many things. We have worked, farmed, been in construction, operated heavy equipment, coached Little League for all three sons, participated in countless community activities, volunteered at the school, run two successful gift and clothing shops, designed and built several buildings including the amazing Gnome House, and remodeled our other vacation rental waterfront home, Maggie's Manor, using the outstanding design drawings of our eldest son, now an Architect.

We are involved in cutting edge restoration of marine habitat and recently completed a 9 weir salmon ladder and planted over 1500 plants and trees over our estuarine and riparian areas. If you have a Facebook page, visit the Deer Harbor Stewardship Project page to see some of what we have been doing. We hope you will 'Like' it.

We have extensive backgrounds in skiing, sailing, cycling and mountaineering. We enjoy adventures and vacations with our children and grand-children.

Why they chose this property

We acquired this classic island waterfront home from a dear family friend who had lived there for over 40 years. We added the third and fourth bedrooms on the upper floor along with a second bathroom. The original tiny kitchen was enlarged to a gorgeous, modern 400 square foot kitchen. After extensive refurbishing and redecorating, we began welcoming vacationing guests in the summer of 1997.

Maggie’s Getaway is located on our 140 acre estate, near our home, and also near our other wonderful vacation rental an extremely popular chalet, the Gnome House, and now also, our Grandma and Grandpa's Getaway on the lower level of our home. We wanted to share our Orcas Island lifestyles with visitors from all over the world. We have on-going environmental restoration activities on our 3 streams, several ponds, magnificent 20 acre estuary, and 20 acre wildfowl marsh, as well as beautiful, productive farm and forest land. It is considered the most significant environmentally diverse San Juan Islands' property by local, state and federal environmental agencies.

The beauty and tranquility of Nature inspires everyone who visits.

Orcas Island is the most popular place in Washington to get married, and is the dream vacation spot for people all over the world, and we get to live here! And when visitors leave and we say 'goodbye', we always are so thankful that we don't have to leave this paradise! Orcas Island is our HOME.

What makes this property unique

In addition to the extraordinary beauty and serenity of Nature,so inspiring to us all, the incredible good weather in Deer Harbor is one of the main reasons for living here. Deer Harbor on beautiful Orcas Island is located in the 'Rain Shadow' area of the Great Pacific Northwest enjoying only 23 inches of rain and over 260 sunny days annually. This means that we can enjoy the great outdoors all year long, hiking, biking, sailing, fishing, etc.

There have been documented over 80 species of birds frequenting the extremely vibrant freshwater marsh. There are a variety of environmental programs in progress. We work with scientists, students, and Native Americans on our restoration efforts. Our property is the site of the first white European settler on Orcas Island, Louis Cayou, who married into the Samish Nation in the mid-1800s. We are working with the Samish descendants of Cayou in our restoration efforts, and hope to have their annual Canoe Journey with about 60 canoes stop here in the future.
Should your dates not be available in this beautiful home, please see our other wonderful vacation rental homes: " Grandma and Grandpa’s Getaway for 2 adults + one child, and the "Famous Romantic Gnome House Chalet “ for up to 4 adults plus 2 small children.
