The property was beautiful and it was quiet. Just want we were looking for. I also really appreciated that we didn't have to do a bunch of cleaning/chores during checkout. Really makes a vacation feel more like a vacation.

Zenzen Gardens delivers on every promise of tranquility from the quaint well kept Elderberry Farmhouse as well as thru out the lush green & garden property. The owner meticulously maintains her entertaining spaces and was a very gracious host as a guest to her summer outdoor event. The added bonus is the pairing of her magnificent backdrop of the West Elks Mountain Range and the tasting of Alred Eames wine collection. If you have made the trek to Paoina this place is a hiden gem.

Great place to stay

We loved staying here, it was serene and quiet which was just what we were looking for. We went to the tasting room one of the days which was really fun and we were able to bring our small dog with us for the tasting. We spent the evenings making dinner, playing board games on the back porch of the farmhouse, and watching the sunset while our chihuahua got to live his dreams of farm life for a couple days. Just a heads up there is no tv but plenty of games and interesting books and the wifi works well.

Wonderful weekend getaway

Great location, clean, beautiful gardens. We were there during a bit of a heat wave and the house only has one swamp cooler in the main room so it was a bit hot… Some fans would be nice. It would also be nice to have a more opaque privacy screen for the second full bed since we were there with friends. But overall a wonderful experience. Would definitely stay again.

She canceled

She canceled our reservation on the very day we were to arrive because there had been a double booking which she ascribed to the booking system….. which, I am sure, was probably true but is kind of shocking when you’ve traveled 2000 miles and the community has limited alternatives. However, she did ultimately connect us with a perfectly acceptable alternative.

Hi Michael, Yes I am so sorry for the mishap. Unfortunately the Vrbo platform is prone is disconnect from our organizational system we use to prevent double bookings, and there was a disconnect that occurred for 24 hours which resolved in a double booking. We felt awful for the situation and I am so sorry that you had to go through the trouble. We have had this issue with Vrbo a few times which is unfortunate, as we pride ourselves in our communication and reliability. I hope you had a great stay in the other location, and again, my sincere apologies.

Family Reunion

The farmhouse was a perfect home away from home for our family reunion! We were very impressed with how much room and how clean, 4 comfortable beds, extra pillows, blankets and plenty of floor space for air mattresses for our family of 10 including an 8 year old and pets! Balcony right off the master bedroom made a spectacular view of the wildlife, forest trees and full moon at night! Kitchen had everything needed dishes, utensils, coffee and pot, pans, refrigerator, stove, and microwave. We spent a lot of time outside playing cornhole, cooked meals on the outdoor grill and shared lots of laughs on the outdoor patio deck with table and chairs. It’s about 10 minutes from Colorado City and 20 minutes away from Lake Isabel where we spent time fishing and paddle boarding! Lynette made a personal visit to drop off coffee pods for the keurig and to make sure we had everything we needed! Thank You Lynette for everything we had a Great time!

Beautiful property, but not beautiful stay

Home not ready for guest arrival. Swamp cooler not turned on in preparation for the visit , night one very hot. (As recognised by the host when the guest called her about it) Cistern not monitored resulting in no water for house on night three when family was trying to get showered up before dinner; resulted in long wait and missed dinner reservation. While host did answer her phone from the guest when alerted, she never followed up, with the guest having to take the lead to ensure it was fixed. While stated on the listing, be aware no personal hygiene supplies for showing (soap, shampoo, etc) provided for guests (first time we have seen this approach). Photos do not show the partial bedroom as is, and sheets used for this bed old / misty. Porch furniture older, not clean, and not inviting to use. Attempted to use when waiting for the cistern to get refilled and pump restarted. Home sits on beautiful property and kitchen very usable for a long term stay.

Hi Matthew, Thank you for your input and I apologize for the inconveniences you faced during your stay here. We are now checking the water level daily on the cistern to ensure this does not happen again. We found the leak! The pump has a gasket which had failed. We replaced all the gaskets and seals on the pump. We also drained and cleaned the cistern in the process of looking for cracks in the tank, there were none. Also, I called my maintenance person immediately after you told me you did not have water and he was on it. He told me he talk to you while it was filling. I also want to remind you I offered you a shower in the main house to accommodate your timileness to your dinner reservation and you declined. I know it was an inconvenience but I did offer a possible solution. As for the swamp cooler, we do not turn it on before guests' arrival, as everyone arrives at different times. It is a waste of energy and water to have it running continuous with no one receiving the benefit of cool air. However, guests are welcome to call or message ahead with that request if needed. Regarding the sheets, I don't believe they were musty as we wash them almost daily with detergent, oxi-clean and a little bleach in each load. We just purchased 22 brand new sets of sheets and have replaced all of the old ones. They arrived two days after your stay. We care about our guests and their experiences, and nice sheets are a high priority. Because of your note, we are researching and considering supplying basic personal hygiene items- this hasn't been an issue in the past. As for the porch furniture, the lounge furniture is nice and yet not new. The cushions are in the budget for next year, as they are not torn or stained, perhaps a little sun bleached though. Yes, the table and chairs are a little older but better than nothing. I don't have a huge operating budget. I am a single owner creating a business from nothing. Thank you for your understanding and I wish you all the best. Sincerely, Cindie Sorensen Owner

Be wary when booking this property

There are things not shown in the info that can be problems( like the house is on a cistern and can run out of water) also amenities that are listed but not there, like a playground and air conditioning (which is a swamp cooler). We booked this property for a small family reunion, spoke to the host Cindie, about this weeks prior to arrival. It shows that you could have "family gatherings of up to 99 people". I told her that there would be approximately 35-40 people coming for a few hours one day. Wasn't a problem with her at the time we spoke, but she changed her mind later. When we arrived, just as the last review stated, the swamp cooler was not on, and the house was stifling hot. This cooler only cools a small portion of the house. The next day, prior to the reunion, the toilet quit working. Advised her of the issue and she came and looked at it. Said she would get a plumber, but never did. We had to keep filling the tank with water everytime we flushed. Cindie did bring us 2 bottles of wine for the "inconvenience of the toilet". We set up chairs under the back tree by the pond where it was cooler, for the reunion. Cindie came and said that we had to move to the front of the house and couldn't be back there. She also said that I had never told her about the reunion. I disagreed with her and she said she "didn't remember" speaking to me about that. She said we could rent the back yard for $150.00 per hour. Not a pleasant stay at this property.

Response from VrboOwner on 9 Aug 2024
Dear Vonda, Thank you for your review. First, let’s address the cistern. You called addressing a previous review. You were not kind with your questions and were accusatory that you would not have water when you arrived. After the previous guest called me, I immediately had staff fill the tank. We discovered we had a major leak with the pump, a seal had failed. Your review had nothing to do with the water levels and should not be included in your review. We drained and completely cleaned the tank and fixed the leak on the pump before your arrival. Second, the toilet was working when you arrived, and you contacted me late in the evening to say that the toilet had stopped filling. You stated that you were filling it by hand, and it would be okay until the morning. The next morning, I personally went into the house and unhooked the supply line to see if it was an airlock issue or if there was some other problem. The pressure was fine, and I deduced that the cartridge in the toilet had an air bubble or had failed. I did reach out to two different plumbers, AJ Plumbing and Carl Johnson Plumbing, neither were available as it was a weekend. I offered you two bottles of wine, the Noche, a Port wine, and also a bottle of Sangre Del Sol, a value of $58.00, for your inconvenience, which you gladly accepted. If you would like to reach out to both plumbers, they will verify that I did contact them. If you would like their phone numbers, I will be more than happy to provide that for you. Please let me know. We now have the toilet filling properly. Third, the next issue was your unkind phone conversation regarding the porty potties. You assumed that they would be dirty. We clean them daily and fill the reservoir as needed. They are cleaned and drained once a week on Mondays by the supplier. Fourth, on Friday night, I moved the water on lawn, and you kindly asked if I could have the sprinkler by the house running for the kids to run around in for the reunion. I kindly agreed and Saturday morning I set the water to the next area of the lawn. Your mother was not happy, I then accommodated her by setting the water in the front of the house. Fifth, VRBO does not have a Swamp Cooler option vs an AC option. I went with the AC option, as it is still cool air. I have lived in that house for 7 years with a swamp cooler and it does keep the house cool. Sixth, during cleaning the porty potties, I noticed that your gathering was more than you expressed on the phone. You called me right around the time when you made your reservation. You told me that you wanted to have a small family reunion with a few family, 10-15 people, who were local, mostly from Hotchkiss, I said that would be fine and that the reunion would have to be at the Elderberry House that you rented. You did not state that there was going to be between 45-55 people present. If the information was correct that you had given me, we would have addressed my venue fees, where we might have the event and if I needed to close down the tasting room for the day and provide an additional porty potty. We would also discussed the issue of the pond with children. I consider the amount of people you had on the property to be an event. My rate is $150/per hour. You were misleading in the information that you had given me about your reunion. This is not a park, I don’t get paid by the county to make this place beautiful. I am a business that has created a space for people to enjoy. It costs money to mow, water, weed, insure and manage. I feel like you took advantage of my kindness to allow a “small gathering” for your reunion. I asked you to move your event to the shade of the trees around the little house. I run a wine tasting room from 12-6 pm daily. The reunion in the location that you personally chose was not discussed with me. A gathering of this size distracts from the ambiance of the tasting area and distracts from other guests enjoying the venue, so I asked you kindly but firmly to move away from the tasting under the veranda and the main house to the shade of the trees at the little house, that you rented as your vacation rental. I also gave you the opportunity to pay the $150.00 and hour to use the space by the pond and stage, but you declined stating that you told me how many people would be present on the phone, which was incorrect information. I never would have agreed to have that many people on the property without addressing financial compensation and the needs of other guests on the property. For example, If I have a concert, I let the guests know that we will have music from 7-9 pm, so they are prepared. If we have a small wedding, I talk to them about the $150/hr, where the wedding would take place, that we are still open for wine tastings and that there will be other guests on the property. Vonda, this is my business, my livelihood, and you took advantage of my offerings. You are an intelligent, well-spoken woman, who had an agenda. I wish you and your family all the best, Cindie Sorensen Owner of Zenzen Gardens
