About this property
Fully Renovated Authentic Victorian in East Dennis
This historic Victorian in the heart of East Dennis offers the charm of an old house with the conveniences of modern living. Our spacious home has beautiful period woodwork, hardwood floors, tasteful furnishings, a stained glass front door and foyer, central A/C, and recently renovated kitchen and baths. The tidal marsh can be seen from the quiet north bedroom, while the other bedrooms are bright and sunny. The house received a 2013 Historic Preservation Award from Dennis Historical Commission.
House Details:
The first floor has a newly renovated (2012), fully equipped, and thoroughly modern kitchen with a gas range, microwave, and dishwasher. Also on the first floor are a pantry, a dining room with a table that seats 12, a large living room with a study area, a comfy sitting room with flat screen TV, and a powder room. Upstairs are three large bedrooms and a smaller one, a full bath, and plenty of closet space. Two of the bedrooms have queen beds, one has two twins, and the fourth has a bunk bed (twin-over-full). A wrap-around porch, outdoor shower, gas grill, and secluded, spacious, flat back yard with a large picnic table make the house ideal for relaxing outside. Guests may use the washer/dryer in the unfinished basement. The attic is not accessible to guests.
The Neighborhood:
The house is on a large wooded lot that faces Route 6A and extends back to the marsh on Sesuit creek. Marshside Restaurant, the Lost Dog Pub, the post office, a convenience store, and the liquor store are all just a 5 minute (.25 mi.) walk away. Cold Storage beach is a 30 minute (1.6 mi.) walk and the beautiful historic towns of the mid-Cape and sprawling beaches of the outer Cape are an easy drive.
Transportation:
Parking in the driveway is available for several vehicles. There is local bus service in Dennis and among Cape towns, but no direct public transportation to the house. Various locations on the Cape are served by buses from Logan Airport (Logan Express) and Providence and there is rail service from Boston to Hyannis in the summer.
Other Info:
We generally rent Saturday to Saturday, but ask about other time frames. You’ll need to bring your own sheets, towels, and beach towels, unless you arrange for us to provide them for an extra charge.
For children, we provide two pack-n-plays (folding crib) and a dresser-top changing pad. There are two twin sized air mattresses (with an electric pump) and two booster seats for the dining room. There are beach toys and board games in the house.

About the host
Hosted by Sarah Kellogg

I have many happy memories of visiting my mother’s aunts in this house when I was growing up in Concord, MA. I lived in the Boston area for years before moving to western Pennsylvania. In 2012, after 8 years living in PA, nostalgia for the east coast and Cape Cod prompted my husband and me to undertake the restoration of this old gem to her former glory (with some essential updates), so that we, my parents, and my siblings could enjoy it again as a vacation home. We enjoy being able to share the history of the house and the area with our renters.
Why they chose this property
The Moose House has been in the family for five generations. It was built in 1891 by an ancestress of the current owners and has been in the family ever since. It is a well-known house in Dennis and has twice been recognized by the Dennis Historical Society (most recently in June 2013) for its significance to the town and for the efforts the family has made to maintain and preserve the house as originally built.
While the house has been in the family for more than a century, most people identify the house with its last full-time resident, Gertrude Crowell (a relative of the founder of the town of Dennis back in 1639). "Geta," as she was known, was an 8th-grade teacher in the Dennis school district for many years and a resident of the town of Dennis for all of her 99 years.
We call the house “The Moose House” because that’s how it was known in the community for decades. For longer than anyone can remember, an impressive stuffed moose head was mounted on the dining room wall, the trophy of an ancestor's hunting trip to New Brunswick. Geta and her sister, Lydia, who also lived in the house for a time, collected all things moose-related and their collection was large and varied: moose-patterned plates, placemats, and towels, moose decorations for the walls, moose ornaments for their Christmas tree, and much more. Locals and relatives would come to the house to visit Geta, Lydia, and “Mr. Moose.” One curious child is said to have searched on the other side of the wall in the pantry “for the rest of the moose.” Mr. Moose (and most of the moose paraphernalia) is gone now—he now resides with a local antiquarian—but so strong and enduring is the association of this house with Geta and with the moose that we couldn’t imagine any other name to give our home but: “The Moose House.”

What makes this property unique
Moose House provides plenty of space for a large family to gather, relax, and enjoy all the Cape has to offer. The kitchen has a window seat and an island that seats 6, allowing people to gather over drinks and hors d'oeuvres or an informal meal. The dining table comfortably seats ten for more formal occasions. The living room and the TV room--both with comfy couches and chairs--provide space for hanging out, watching movies, or chatting. The bedrooms are large and airy. The back yard is bounded by a woodsy area leading back to the marsh, providing a secluded area for relaxing, playing catch or frisbee, or having a meal at the picnic table.
