Thank you for your kind words. We thoroughly enjoyed having you stay with us, and hope you will return again soon. Grandma and Grandpa's Getaway has been loved by so many people, and we are happy that it was wonderful for you, too.
The gateway to an incredibly relaxing weekend in Orcas Island. We really enjoyed staying with Meg & Bob and were lucky enough to meet them before heading home.
This property over looks the water on a very quiet part of the island. I certainly recommend you stay here!
Such a cute spot! Great communication from the hosts and instructions for getting there and staying there. Bob and Meg were very thoughtful for our elopement! Such an amazing view from the deck! Very quiet as well. Highly recommend!
Cute little hideaway with great views and wonderful hosts! Close to Mt. Constitution, but not many places to eat unless you're there earlier in the evenings. It just depends on the time of the year, in some cases.
My daughter and I loved staying at the Getaway! It was so cute and cozy and was perfect for the two of us! It was easy to find and Meg was amazing. If we needed anything she was on it! The communication before we got there was awesome! Everything was just as expected!
Overall satisfaction however not pleased about any situation and cobwebs.

Funcky
Wonderful view from the deck! Apartment is dated and some things that would normally be found in a vacation rental were missing -- coffee, tea, saran wrap. If we hadnt needed to call to find the parking spot, we would have had no contactvwith the host.

Small, rustic place
The best part of this place was probably the partial view of the Sound. The space was under the owner's house. It smelled bad and the constant loud droning of the old refrigerator was really irritating. The clothes dryer wasn't working so we couldn't do the laundry we anticipated doing at the mid-point of our trip. It was just a kind of an old, funky place.

Thank you for writing a review; it helps us with issues we can remedy. You commented that you couldn't use the washer/dryer; however, there is NO washer/dryer option in our listing. There is not one in this apartment for guests' use. Perhaps you missed the lack of a mention of that when you first perused our listing. You also mentioned a smell you didn't care for. We always put fresh flowers in the rentals, and yours had a huge bouquet, maybe even two bouquets of super fragrant sweet peas from our garden. Most of our guests love that fragrance!
Sorry it wasn't your cup of tea, but we hope you had a lovely time on Orcas Island. It is so special. We love it still after 48 years!
This sweet getaway was just as advertised with one important exception. Accessing the space requires climbing a fairly steep dirt pathway followed by a lengthy staircase. "Grandmas and Grandpas" who rent this space may well have difficulty with this climb, especially with heavy luggage and any other things they brought with them. This presented a bit of a problem for my sister and myself. Other than this challenge, we totally enjoyed this space.

It was dated and needed some care
While we love Orcas Island and will definitely be back, we will not, however, return to this place. They do have a view as advertised but the windows were cracked all the way across and were filthy dirty. We had to get through a maze of spider webs to get to the outdoor furniture which was badly in need of cleaning. They advertised being able to watch the birds flock to their feeders. The feeders were empty and probably had been for awhile as their was an inch of mold in the bottom of one.
There were cobwebs above the dining room table and the calking in the bathtub was pulling away. This could be a cute place but is badly in need of some maintenance and tender loving care.

Hi, Judy,
Thanks for your review. Your relatively last minute visit did catch us a little pressed for time as we were going off island and thus needed to rely on someone else to help with the preparations. In the Autumn, in a very rustic setting, it is challenging to keep up with the cobwebs, leaves, and such blowing around in the breeze. I personally was not able to be there to do the final check, and I would have definitely taken care of most of what you mentioned. Your suggestions will be taken to heart, and taken care of right away.
Thanks for choosing our little family getaway for your visit, and should you decide to try again, we will offer you a discounted rental fee.
Have wonderful holidays!
The unit was clean but run-down. One of the chairs on the deck was completely unusable with screws poking up through the seat. Place smelled moldy and room deodorizer was used to cover it up. The View was nice! And the host was friendly and offered to let us stay a bit longer on our checkout date. All in all it was just okay.
This is the 2nd year we have stayed here and we find it Charming! Great view, friendly hosts, even has 2 dogs and a cat that visit. We Love that! We are planning our dates for new year.
Love, love, love the views, the on site playground, friendly pets, and great hosts. The small basement apartment reminded me of my childhood basement, with wood paneled walls and carpeting. While it didn't bother me, perhaps worth noting that there were a handful of insects that I needed to usher outside each day, mostly ants and spiders. Seems reasonable for a basement apartment in a rural location.
We loved the peacefulness of the property! My son loved spending time at the play set with the dogs, Sunny and Shep! We will definitely consider a future stay and recommend it to our friends. Thank you Bob and Meg!

Nice hosts, nice property, apartment not the cleanest
A friend and i stayed here for a wedding in deer harbor, which was very convenient, and the hosts made all sorts of printouts for us to orient ourselves and get around. Unfortunately, though, the place had huge (!) cobwebs EVERYWHERE and rodent droppings in several spots. We brought this to their attention and Meg was very nice, came down and talked to us about their cleaning practices so we felt more comfortable that they had disinfected (because covid) and attempted to clean up the rest while we were out. She cleaned away some but still missed a lot of the bigger cobwebs and we found more rodent droppings after. It wasn't a bad place to stay at all, it was just a lot of money to stay in a spider den.
We were Pleasantly surprised and happy with our stay here. We thought it was better in person than the pictures showed. Especially the deck which we thought would be very small and it was not! Beautiful view, charming cottage, Loved having 2 dogs and a cat who visited and enjoyed very much getting to visit with Meg and Bob a bit here and there. We have already booked for five nights next year!
view was outstanding dogs sunny and shep gave us a tail wagging welcome and hosts Mg and Bob were delightful.

About the host
Hosted by Meg and Bob Connor
We have lived full time on Orcas Island since 1975, raising three sons, who are now married with children who love to visit their grand-parents. We have been happily married for 45 years!
We moved up here with a down payment and no jobs and over the years have done many things. We have worked, farmed, been in construction, operated heavy equipment, coached Little League for all three sons, participated in countless community activities, volunteered at the school, run two successful gift and clothing shops, designed and built several buildings including the amazing Gnome House, and remodeled our other vacation rental waterfront home, Maggie's Manor, using the outstanding design drawings of our eldest son, now an Architect.
We are involved in cutting edge restoration of marine habitat and just completed a 9 weir salmon ladder and planted over 1500 plants and trees over our estuarine and riparian areas. If you have a Facebook page, visit the Deer Harbor Stewardship Project page to see some of what we have been doing. We hope you will 'Like' it.
We have extensive backgrounds in skiing, sailing, cycling and mountaineering. We enjoy adventures and vacations with our children and grand-children.
Why they chose this property
Our family, extended family and many friends have enjoyed this darling apartment getaway over the years, and now we are excited to share it with "the world". It is located on our 140 acre estate, on the lower level of our home, and also near our other wonderful vacation rental 4 bedroom waterfront home, called Maggie's Manor and the famous and very popular, Gnome House. Many larger groups of guests rent this in addition to either or both of our other vacation rental homes when their group is too many for just one house. We want to share our Orcas Island lifestyles with visitors from all over the world. We have on-going environmental restoration activities on our 3 streams, several ponds, magnificent 20 acre estuary, and 20 acre wildfowl marsh, as well as beautiful, productive farm and forest land. It is considered the most significant environmentally diverse San Juan Islands' property by local, state and federal environmental agencies.
The beauty and tranquility of Nature inspires everyone who visits.
Orcas Island is the most popular place in Washington to get married, and is the dream vacation spot for people all over the world, and we get to live here! And when visitors leave and we say 'goodbye', we always smile...not because we are happy to see them go, but rather because we are so happy that we don't have to leave this paradise!
What makes this property unique
In addition to the extraordinary beauty and serenity of Nature, so inspiring to us all, the incredible good weather in Deer Harbor is one of the main reasons for living here. Deer Harbor on beautiful Orcas Island is located in the 'Rain Shadow' area of the Great Pacific Northwest enjoying only about 25 inches of rain and over 260 sunny days annually. This means that we can enjoy the great outdoors all year long, hiking, biking, sailing, fishing, etc. There have been documented over 80 species of birds frequenting our extremely vibrant freshwater marsh. There are a variety of environmental programs in progress. We work with scientists, students, and Native Americans on our restoration efforts. Our property is the site of the first white European settler on Orcas Island, Louis Cayou, who married into the Samish Nation in the mid-1800s. We are working with the Samish descendants of Cayou in our restoration efforts, and hope to have their annual Canoe Journey with about 60 canoes stop here in the future.
