Your Windows To The Ocean, Lobstering Village, And Private Floating Dock!
Bask in the natural marine beauty and wildlife of Muscongus Bay on the deck of the fourth generation family home, lovingly named Briarnook. Built in the waning days of schooners, Briarnook was completely remodeled and modernized to take advantage of the spectacular 180 degree water and island views.
The two bedroom, one bath coastal cottage features a full deck with seating for a dozen, a sleeping cabin for two additional guests, and an easy ride to the charming towns of Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor, Rockland, and Camden. Or stay closer to your summer home and climb Pemaquid's lighthouse for a seagull's view of the bay and enjoy fresh seafood at Shaw's famous restaurant in New Harbor.
The large deck provides a wonderful place to relax, and watch local lobster fishermen haul traps and then return later in the day with their catch. Or... get up with the sun, and watch the fishermen as they leave for the day! The large picture windows continue to provide the breathtaking views as you prepare meals in the well equipped , fully modern kitchen.
Make Briarnook your summer or autumn retreat and return to your life refreshed as these former guests did:
“We spent many days seeing and photographing Maine. It was always so pleasant to think we would be returning each day to such a relaxing and wonderful home situated in such an incredible setting.” --M.H.
“We just loved the view! Spent lots of time in the gliders and recliners enjoying the wildlife.” --J.C.
“Sitting in the glider on our last morning watching the sun try to break through the clouds, and the birds. The layout is perfect and everything is so comfortable and cozy. You don't mind cooking on vacation with a view like that!” --A.D.
“It is so serene and beautiful here and the cottage is easy to stay and relax in.”

This property and our host met and far exceeded our expectations for a great place to stay in Maine for our first vacation in this state. We liked it so much, for many reasons, we are returning to the same lovely home next year.
We enjoyed watching the sunrise while having a cup of coffee. The views are fantastic and it is in a very quiet area. It was the perfect spot for our time in the area.
Wonderful spot on Muscongus Bay. Fabulous view with many wildlife sightings, very comfortable and close to everything, Dots bakery, Debs Diner, shopping and artists studios in Bristol and Damariscotta. Great stargazing, too.
Once again, for our second visit, we had such a lovely stay. Briarnook is a wonderful place to stay to just "chill out." Our host family couldn't be nicer, and they are so accommodating. We look forward to hopefully visiting again sometime in the future!

Thank you, so glad you enjoyed your stay, hope you'll be able to return!
This cottage is located on Muscongus Bay and the views are breathtaking! We really didn't want to leave as it was so beautiful, and very clean. We did do some exploring and went to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, New Harbor, Christmas Cove and the lovely town of Damariscotta with shops and restaurants (15 mins). Highly recommend this cottage!

Wendy, thank you so much. So glad you enjoyed your stay!
We walked into the house and stopped and said WOW! The wrap around windows give you a perfect view of the ocean. The house is open and very comfortable. Many hours were spent on the deck watching the loons, bald eagles, seals, fishing boats. We relaxed and totally enjoyed our week.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed your stay and enjoyed all the local seafood! Laurie
This is the second year we stayed at Briarnook while vacationing in Maine. We lengthened our stay this year and were glad we did. The cottage provides the perfect accommodations for our family. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly. The amenities were all we hoped for and the location is spot on. We could sit and watch the tide go in and out or buzz up to Camden and Rockland or down to Boothbay and Portland even. Hoping to stay again next year...so much more to explore.

Glad you returned and enjoyed your stay! Thank you for taking such good care of the cottage. It is greatly appreciated!
Our two weeks at Briarnook went by so fast. As always, the place was immaculate and well stocked. The view is spectacular and the neighborhood quiet and friendly. The location is perfectly positioned mid-Maine making trips to Camden, Boothbay, Rockland and Bath easily accessible. We spent much of our time close to “home base”…Pemaquid Point and the beach…numerous nature hikes through some of the preserves in the area…and fishing off the dock. There are several super restaurants nearby. We always enjoy our stay here and are already looking forward to next year.

Beautifully restored family place. Casual, comfortable, and just wow. You walk in the view knocks your socks off. If you have a boat this property would be absolutely perfect. Personally found there to be a bit too much life for swimming here, but that is personal preference. But, the dock and floating docks were a great place to hang out and stick your toes in. Great places to eat a short drive away. Nice place to decompress. Sunrises and sunsets could not be beat!

Dear Joy, So glad you enjoyed your stay! Thank you for you kind words. Laurie
This year we extended our stay at Briarnook to two weeks…and we were glad we did. The house and property suit our needs perfectly. Lots of room inside and out…always spotless and well maintained. Everything we needed was provided and the upgraded internet service was much appreciated. It’s hard to beat the location…right at the water’s edge…with amazing ocean views…on a quiet road with friendly neighbors. This year we spent time exploring the nearby sites…plenty of hiking trails…Pemaquid Point…Fort William Henry…kayaking in the Damariscotta River…and the kid’s favorite…Pemaquid Beach. Lots of great places to eat close by…Shaw’s, The Contented Sole, Muscongus Bay Lobster and The Abundant Bakery. The C.E. Reilly grocery store in New Harbor is well stocked with just about anything you need.
We couldn’t ask for more gracious hosts…Laurie and her brothers and sister always make us feel welcome and comfortable…so grateful they are willing to share Briarnook with us. Already looking forward to our stay next year.

It's so nice hearing about all the many things you do while staying at the cottage, and wonderful knowing that others love it there as much as we do. Thank you for choosing to stay at Briarnook. Laurie
Our family enjoyed another amazing vacation here at Briarnook. The location is perfect…right in the middle of lots of interesting spots….whale watching in Boothbay, sightseeing in Camden, Brunswick and Bath, visiting the lighthouse at Pemaquid Point and candle pin bowling on the rainy day. The kids had a ball looking for sea creatures in the tide pools and taking a spin around the harbor in our inflatable. A couple of days were spent at nearby beaches. There are several excellent restaurants and lobster pounds nearby. The house is immaculate, well equipped and just right for the 4 adults and 2 toddlers. The bunkhouse provided some extra sleeping space. The AC was greatly appreciated this vacation as it was quite warm a for part of our stay. The views from the house are stunning. We got a kick out of watching the seals and dolphins. The neighborhood is quiet and the neighbors friendly and helpful. We couldn’t ask for a better host. Laurie was attentive and super quick to respond to any questions we had. We are all hoping to go back next summer.

Dear Barbara, So glad you all enjoyed your stay. Thank you for you kind words, you certainly highlighted many of the things that we feel make Briarnook so special. We'll look forward to having you return! Laurie
I’ve been vacationing in Maine for about fifty years and this has to be one of my favorite homes to rent. With three walls of glass, the views are incredible! The home is very comfortable and had everything we needed. The beds (a king in the master!) were comfy and the large kitchen was appreciated. We even had a dishwasher, how cool is that!
My husband was always up to greet the beautiful sunrise. We watched a lobsterman pull his traps right in front of us. There were loons, ducks and geese. We watched a pair of eagles and even witnessed a seal feeding.
When I couldn’t find a local lobster pound, Laurie came to the rescue! She found two of them within fifteen minutes of us. We were minutes away from Pemaquid Point—my favorite spot in all of Maine. We had fun at the annual Pumpkinfest in Damarascotta. Fall is my favorite season in Maine and we were not disappointed—the color was awesome.
You will not be disappointed if you choose Briarnook for your vacation. I would definitely love to return!

Thank you so much for your review, we love knowing others find it as special a place as we do! So glad you enjoyed your stay, as well as the lobster!!!
The property was just lovely. The view was amazing and so peaceful! We thoroughly enjoyed the deck overlooking the water and spent much time watching the wildlife…even saw a bald Eagle and a seal. There was a slight issue trying to check in, but Laurie was available right away to get us in. Would highly recommend to others!
Best Christmas ever! Property was exactly as described. Very clean and nice layout, we couldn’t ask for anything more.
I brought a few Christmas decorations/lights and the pitch black at night was the perfect backdrop! Snow on Christmas Day was the most magical watching it on the water!
We will definitely make plans over the summer to come back and enjoy the deck!
Thanks for everything!

Thank You! so glad you enjoyed your stay. You were the first Christmas rental!! Laurie
What a view! And in a lovely, quiet neighborhood. We saw a lone seal two out of three mornings, along with a juvenie eagle and some other water fowl. One drawback was all the goose poop on the front lawn, but not sure how anyone could police that. I wouldnt want to upset the geese. Just be careful where u step! The driveway was almost impossible le to see. It's not a traditional driveway that ine might expect. It's a spot on the lawn that is parallel with the road. Luckily the nice neighbor saw us looking for it and came out to assist. Once he pointed it out, we could see a little bit of gravel amongst the grass. Maybe a diagram or more detail would help future guests. We had a great time though! We loved that it was an older, family home. And the two lazyboy recliners by the windows were great! And thank you for the binoculars! Nearby Damariscotta was adorable.
I needed some alone time and Briarnook helped me get that in a beautiful, serene setting. The house is very clean, well-supplied, and comfortable. It was a good jumping off point to visit other areas.
The perfect place to escape the madness of everyday life. Peaceful retreat with a stunningly beautiful view. Can't wait to come back!

About the host
Hosted by Laurie C. Allen
Briarnook is owned by four siblings. Laurie, George, Jeff, and Robin. Growing up in Thomaston, about 40 minutes away, we lived and worked on a dairy farm, and went to nearby schools and Maine colleges. We are all still Mainers at heart, and live or spend a great deal of time in our home state. With families of our own, we have loved spending time here with our children, and now introducing our grandchildren to the wonders of the Maine coast.
Why they chose this property
Briarnook has been family loved and owned since 1950. Belonging first to our great grandparents, grandparents, and then mother, it then became ours. As children, many happy times were spent with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins both here and across the harbor on the beach you can see on Hog Island.
What makes this property unique
Briarnook has been completely remodeled with all the conveniences of home. A fully equipped kitchen overlooking the ocean make cooking an enjoyable task. Two bedrooms, one with a king size bed and another with two twins, and one bath with walk in shower. It has an open floor plan with a bar separating the kitchen from a dining area, and a full size living room. A cabin with twin beds is the perfect spot for children and teens. Internet access, and Direct TV are available. A large deck with a retractable awning provides a wonderful place to sit and enjoy the comings and goings of a small lobster fishing village, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, a place to read or.... "it's always 5 o'clock somewhere!"
