Unique sense of place to decompress and rejuvenate. Quiet stunning beauty.
Luxury year-round retreat for large families, groups, executive teams, wellness retreat, friends, or a romantic getaway for the two of you to focus on each other. Alaskan wilderness feel in exquisite comfort with all amenities and then some. Expansive views in all directions from the warmth of all wood-paneled custom-designed interior. See multiple glaciers across the bay in full view. This home is like no other - every room is finished in wood. Ceilings, walls, floors of hickory, pine and oak constructed with the finest craftmanship. The warm feel of wood, the in-floor hydronic heat and rustic lighting create the ultimate unplugged experience. Yes there is satellite internet, but no land-line and no cell signal. Upstairs Master suite and loft for romance or quiet contemplation. Large stone fireplace and cathedral ceiling great room with mood lighting. Chef’s kitchen and 10 seat dining table. Two guest bedrooms and full bath on both main level and downstairs walk-out basement. 80 acre lot that is adjacent to thousands of acres of state land for snow mobiling, cross country skiing, hunting and hiking. Private retreat on year round maintained road. Hear the beat of bald eagle wings from large deck or view moose grazing peacefully. Fields of colorful wild flowers in summer. The house is not off the grid - there is electricity and a buried propane storage tank for energy. The wood burning fireplace with air circulation fan contributes to the ambiance and warmth of this chalet-style home. In the warm summer, windows and a breeze serve as air conditioning. Each bedroom has individual temperature control (heating) separate from the common areas. Guests arrive up the wooden stairs to a large covered porch. There is a large stack of firewood ready to go. The unique double oak doors help keep in heat when restocking the fire. Inside is a small tiled floor area in front of the coat closet for removing boots or shoes, but the rest of the main and upper floors are dark oak hardwood (except bathrooms, which are tiled, as is all of the lower level). The upstairs consists of a master suite and a sitting loft. The master suite has a queen bed, dresser, full length mirror and large his/her closet. Two nightstands each with individual reading lights on dimmer control. Also a hidden storage space. The master bath has a large shower and twin sinks. The master suite has vaulted ceiling with intricate wood rafters, beams, and a ceiling fan. The master bedroom windows face east, and the long twilight in the mornings and evenings, coupled with the silence that surrounds, give guests such peace and serenity that you never want to get up. But morning coffee sipped in the sitting loft with two large leather chairs is a great start to another day of decompression and rejuvenation. This loft has soft lighting on dimmers to give you just the right mood to relax. The main floor has two bedrooms and a 3/4 bath. Each bedroom has a queen bed, large closet, dresser, and night stands with lamps. The great room has comfortable leather chairs and a couch for gathering around the stone fireplace. There is a large deck accessed from the great room. The dining area has a large wood table and 10 chairs. Great room lighting controls allow guests to adjust to their mood and taste, from very bright to the softest almost dark setting. Lighting controls include the ability to illuminate the huge rafters and beams on dimmer, outside lights to see falling snow, and dimmer controlled wall fixtures. There is also a ceiling fan. The outdoor deck is a place all its own. Guests can stand out there or sit in one of the deck chairs and enjoy coffee in the morning or wine in the afternoon and hear the sound of silence and a soft breeze. The deck is a great place for yoga in the warmer months. Gaze across to three glaciers and mountains and a glimpse of the bay through the trees while you practice your asanas. There is a large (12") Dobsonian telescope that can be moved to the deck for stargazing in the darker months. The kitchen is a chef's dream. Six-burner Wolf gas range w/ griddle, and two ovens, one convection. The gas broiler makes steaks like the best steak houses. The kitchen is fully stocked with quality pans, pots, knives, cooking utensils etc. There is a large pot for steaming the Bering Sea King Crab that can be purchased at Coal Point Seafood in Homer - it might even come from the Time Bandit crab boat of the TV series "World's Deadliest Catch." There is also a HUGE wooden salad bowl for Cesar or other delectable creation. There is a coffee grinder, french press, drip machine, and espresso percolator to enjoy gourmet coffee as you desire. The kitchen layout provides plenty of work space for multiple "cooks" to convene and contribute - but PLEASE only cut/ chop with one of the cutting boards: the finished wood countertops are only beautiful if we can keep errant knives from damaging them! There is a disposal, dishwasher and wine cooler. Large Telescope for stargazing. The lower level has two bedrooms, two gathering areas equipped with a pool table, games, and smart TV. There is also a storage room (skis etc.), and a full bath with a large soaking tub. It is easy to grab the skis or snowshoes and walk out the lower level into nature's paradise. The utility room has a washer and dryer. The house is just off the road, but screened by alder bushes. There is a small community of Russian old believers a mile down the road called Razdolna, and there is an occasional car, ATV or snow mobile. But for the most part there is silence. The road provides year round access. It is a good quality dirt road. The house is 3.6 miles from the asphalt of East End road (mile marker 19). The lot is 80 acres. The house sits in the middle of the south 40 acres. A recreational access road divides the south 40 from the north 40 - there is a recreational parking area about a half mile to the northeast of the property where snowmobilers park. There is also a hiking trail (10km) to Caribou Lake. In the winter, just strap on X-C skis and go for miles into the wilderness, or bring your snow machine and go forever. Family retreat, executive retreat, romantic nest, woman-castle or man-cave: this house can serve as all the above. You will not experience anything like it - from the wood to the views to the sound of silence anywhere else.

Thank you, I’m glad I could accommodate your wedding group and contribute to a memorable event.
This trip was amazing and its largely in part to this magnificent home and the warmth and amenities it provided the group during our stay. All our creature comforfts were met and this was a unforgettable adventure once again.
Robert’s home is gorgeous with stunning views of the glaciers. It is remote which is the only reason I gave it a 4. If seclusion is your goal, this house is perfect.
Stayed here for a short ladies weekend- the house was very nice, the kitchen big and perfect for preparing meals, and the views amazing! The location is out of town and very private. 10/10 would recommend.
This home was a perfect place for our group of 8 (4 couples) to spend our three days in Homer. What a beautiful home with plenty of space, beautiful views and top-notch amenities. Everything was immaculate and we could not have asked for a better place to spend our time in beautiful Homer. Thank you Robert for sharing your property with us!
“A Unique Sense of Place” is quite aptly named. This home was the perfect location for our group to use as a base of operation to explore Homer and the surrounding area. I've rarely found a VRBO home better setup and stocked (love the wine share!). Lastly, Robert the
The cabin is very nice and spacious. Ten of us had plenty of room to spread out. The cabin was perfectly clean and we received great communication from the host immediately upon booking. The location is quiet with an amazing view of the mountains and glacier. We saw several moose in the yard. It is well worth the drive. My husband has stayed here once before and we look forward to staying here again.
This home exceeded all of our expectations. We saw moose in the yard every day of our stay. We even saw a few porcupines in the yard. The home itself was exceptionally comfortable for our large group of 12. The kitchen was extremely well outfitted for a vacation rental home. The host was extremely accommodating and the detailed notes regarding the home and our experience was perfect. We would not hesitate to rent again when we are in Homer.
It was lovely enjoying the mountain/ glacial views this lovely cabin boasts. Private, yet a short, drive into Homer, was the best of both worlds. The only thing I wish we would have had more detail about was just how stocked the kitchen was. We ended up buying too many condiments/ seasoning types of groceries when the house was fully stocked on all these things. A few extra blankets would have been great for the couch and early morning porch seatings. Very comfortable and great location. Exactly what we were looking for.

Jenica,
Thank you for the review and feedback. With respect to the kitchen spices and condiments, guests both leave extra condiments/ spices, but also use them, and it is not possible to maintain a current inventory, nor to restock if guests were to use up all of something - guests only stay several days and the constant turnover makes spices and condiments a very moving target!
There are extra blankets for sitting outside etc., - at least a half dozen, that are in the bottom shelf of the bookcase in the upstairs sitting area. I guess we'll have to find a more conspicuous place to store them since they weren't obvious. I'll also update the handbook to mention that they are available.
Thank you again for the feedback.
This property was absolutely magical! The home is gorgeous and very comfortable with enough space for large groups. The views during the day and at night were breathtaking and there was no shortage of amenities in the home. Our group went snowmachining during the day and this home was the perfect location for accessing the trails out by Caribou Lake. Our host Bob was phenomenal when it came to communication throughout the entire stay. I would definitely recommend a stay at this luxurious beautiful getaway. Its worth every penny, especially if you enjoy snowmachining or winter activities.
Our family had a great time staying here while up here from out of state for our wedding. It had everything they needed except a place for their 1 year old to sleep. I would recommend a crib and a baby gate to keep toddlers from escaping up and down the stairs. It is a beautiful place in a beautiful setting. They saw a mama moose and twin calves in the yard a few times. Plenty of space for all 5 couples and two small children. Not sure why there is a steep cleaning fee for each day when it only gets cleaned after we leave, and we are asked to put the bedding and towels in the laundry and haul away our trash. Other than that it was great!

Carl,
Thank you for your review. I’m glad you enjoyed your stay.
Of note, the cleaning fee is not per day, but is a one time fee per stay for our local cleaning crew to turn over the five bedroom/ seven bed/ three bathroom/ three level lodge in five hours between 11:00 checkout and 4:00 pm checkin for next guests.
The fee is on par compared to cleaning my personal home in Colorado.
When same-day turnovers are occurring, we ask gusts to start the laundry- even with twin sets of washing machines, getting it all done in five hours is a challenge.
Thank you again for your comments. We look forward to hosting you again.
Our family was together for our daughter’s wedding in Homer. It was everything we needed and more. There was space for three families with plenty of room and bathrooms. The bunk beds were perfect for one family with small children. The kitchen had everything we needed and the TV room provided a great space for the kids to hang out in, leaving the adults the opportunity to relax in the extra comfy sofa and chairs. Robert is an excellent host; he was very responsive with excellent communication including a handbook prior to the trip. We chose this location because it was close to the wedding venue, we had no idea the spectacular surprise that was waiting for us! The view of the glacier and the gorgeous fireweed were breathtaking. Thank you for your hospitality and sharing such and magical place.

About the host
Hosted by Robert Chew
I run a medium sized company but am getting close to retirement. We have about 500 employees across the globe providing engineering, consulting and technical services. I have a chemical engineering degree, I served as an officer on a nuclear submarine, and I live in Boulder Colorado.
Why they chose this property
I bought the land in 2006 as an investment. After seeing a gazillion stars early one frigid morning in February 2007, and after cross-country skiing, I decided to build a house. I had the best time designing and seeing it built in 2009-2010. It is tight against the weather and inviting to the sight and touch. I hope you enjoy it as I have been!
What makes this property unique
This home, with its soft wood paneling interior, gives one peace and serenity not found in many other places. And it is quiet - you can truly "hear the sound of silence" as the song goes. Please enjoy the rejuvenation and connection that so easily occurs in this special place. Read, write, imagine, heal... whatever you need...
