Authentic Log Cabin With One Bedroom, One Bath, Huge Living Room With Lake View
About Roberta Kesselring
Merlin and I (Roberta) Kesselring have just purchased this property from Earl and Judy Gill who have lovingly cared for and tended the Stockade Lake Cabin for about 8 years now. They have poured their hearts and talents into making this place a five-star rated vacation rental. So, we know we have a high bar to reach, and will do our best to treat you the way they have in the past. We are a retired couple who have lived many places, but left a part of our hearts in the Black Hills many years ago, and truly feel like we are finally "coming home". We retired a few years ago from building a small old west cowtown in the badlands of northwest Nebraska. After hosting guests there for a number of years, we turned the business over to a son and family and retired. Recently we have been drawn back to the Black Hills and now we are here.

Why Roberta Kesselring chose Custer
This property suits our needs perfectly. We will be living on the same property as the Stockade Lake cabin, so feel we can properly care for the cabin and guests, and also have or own personal "guest house" when our children and grandchildren come to visit. Now they can have their own spot while visiting us, and when they are gone, we want to share our property with guests from anywhere in the world. There is absolutely nothing like the smell of pines in the sun, or the soft whispering of pines on a breezy day. Having this cabin also gives us an opportunity to share some of the collections we have been able to acquire over the years, hopefully bringing the feeling of sharing history.
What makes this Cabin unique
Probably first and foremost the draw of the Stockade Lake Cabin is the lake! There is absolutely nothing like having a view of living water with all the colors and changes the surface can show with the sun, wind, snow or whatever mother nature brings us. And, to be able to have this view from the cabin, either inside looking out or sitting on the front porch/patio, is the most unique quality of our property.

Stockade Cabin was Beautiful!!!
Clean, convenient, comfortable, cheerful hostess all made for our perfect stay at Stockade Lake Cabin! Best VRBO ever!!!
Great Location, Cozy Cabin
My husband and I enjoyed 3 days in the Stockade Cabin. The location of the cabin is just outside the entrance to Custer State Park as noted and it is just a few minutes drive into Custer. The original cabin, now the living room, is a cozy spot to sit & relax. The kitchen is well stocked (although we did not cook while there - we WERE on VACATION! ;) ), comfortable bed & a nice bath. It was too wet to have a fire outside. Deer & turkeys visited the location late afternoon. All-in-all, we were pleased with the location.
Roberta was the best host. Her property is more like a home than just a rental property.
What a comfortable cabin this was. Not just comfortable and warm, but with all of Roberta's touches throughout make this property more a home than a cabin. It was so nice to come "home" after a long day of exploring and just relax. Would recommend to anyone wanting to stay in Custer. Thank you, Roberta!!
Perfect Cabin for Us
The Stockade Cabin provided us with a perfect home-base for our six days in the Black Hills/Custer. We were thrilled with the look and feel of the cabin as soon as we arrived. The cabin is historic and lovely. Everything you need and more is provided by Roberta and Dick. The location allows for easy access to Custer restaurants, hiking trails in Custer State Park and the Black Hills, as well as all of the major roads to visit sites like the Badlands and Mt Rushmore. The hosts are awesome, providing a warm welcome, privacy, and assistance as needed. We will rent this cabin again when we return to the area.
All about location and the beautiful Custer State Park
Roberta was wonderful to work with. The personal touches she made of the property were outstanding. She welcomed us to the cabin and explained anything we needed to know. Then afterwords she was available to answer any questions we had.
Fantastic Black Hills property!
The Stockade Lake Cabin exceeded expectations - which were already high based on the majority of prior reviewer's comments. Great location, tons of amenities, and a fun experience for my family. My favorite part was the fire area with dry wood, kindling, and even a grate to cook hamburgers! Anyone who has paid $4 to $5 for a bundle of wood that lasts for about 15 mins understands how great of a perk this is. Thanks again Roberta!
Where does one start to tell of all the places to see and things to do in the Black Hills? Custer is centrally located and so, in an easy and beautiful drive of a half hour or less, you can visit Mt. Rushmore, the quaint old town of Keystone, or Hill City, where you can ride the 1880 train, visit the Prairie Berry Winery, shop local and unique places, eat at the famous Alpine Inn which features authentic German foods, visit the Crazy Horse mountain carving in progress. If you love the outdoors, there is no end to interesting and beautiful places to see. The hiking trail from Sylvan Lake up to the top of Harney Pk. is about 3 1/2 miles long, mostly up, but so beautiful it is worth the effort. Harney Pk. is the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains at about 7000 ft. elevation. The 360 degree view from the top is something you will never forget. Lakes abound within easy driving distance from our Stockade Lake Cabin if you want to explore further than just across the road.
