ROMANTIC GETAWAY : Relax In Our Outdoor Spa This Winter !

Escape the stresses of daily life at our elegant 4-bedroom cottage, just 10 minutes from historic downtown Frederick. Set on five private acres with a tree-lined driveway, you’ll enjoy luxury finishes, a heated spa, and a private pool (seasonal) I in a peaceful, secluded setting that’s still close to I-70, I-270, and Route 340.

Things to do in the Frederick Area

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains you will be less than one hour from Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland and minutes from Gettysburg, Antietam and Harper's Ferry. A trip to the big city isn’t necessary for history buffs. Tour the National Museum of Civil War Medicine or the Revolutionary Hessian Barracks, or the grounds of Monocacy National Battlefield. Travel to nearby Antietam, Gettysburg, Harper’s Ferry, or South Mountain Battlefield.

If nature is more your pleasure, hike or bike the trails of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Catoctin Mountain Park or the C&O Canal or take in the waterfalls at Cunningham Falls State Park. A tour of downtown Frederick’s historic architecture, public arts, the Community Bridge and murals makes a great day trip. Frederick has been named one of “America’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations:,” “Great Places in America,” and a “Preserve America” community.

Performing Arts & Music
The city of Frederick is a recognized Maryland Arts and Entertainment District. Take in a play, concert or dance performance at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Across the street you’ll find a more intimate experience at the Maryland Ensemble Theater featuring a main stage series of original and contemporary plays, comedies improve troupes, and a family theater series. If a dinner theater is more to your liking visit the Way-Off Broadway Dinner Theater.

Lovers of live music will want to visit downtown Frederick after 9 pm on weekends. Shoppers will love boutiques, specialty shops and antique emporiums in downtown Frederick. It’s a short drive to one of the nearby antique meccas, such as New Market, Mt Airy, Middletown, Emmitsburg and Thurmont. Sample Frederick’s nationally acclaimed wines at wine festivals held throughout the year.

Summers in Frederick are magical with wonderful arts events. The Frederick Festival of the Arts features more than 100 artists and dozens of musical offerings. Frederick also boasts a great Summer Concert Series which launches its annual season of weekly Sunday night concerts in beautiful Baker Park. On Thursday mornings in late June, July and August, Summerfest Family Theater features professionally produced children’s entertainment there as well. On Thursday nights the Carroll Creek Amphitheater heats up with the sounds of live music during Alive @ Five for those over 21.

Visual Arts
Frederick offers fine arts venues such as the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center featuring diverse art exhibits in an exciting location. Equally engaging are the many privately-owned galleries and shops specializing in original paintings, pottery, jewelry and artistically executed home accessories. The city landscape provides dozens of public art projects where you will find more than 30 murals and sculptures.

Sports
If baseball is your favorite pass-time, take in an evening at the Frederick Keys Stadium. The Class A Minor League farm team of the Baltimore Orioles offers fireworks, kids’ activities and a family friendly environment. Enjoy some of Frederick’s top golf courses including Musket Ridge, Maryland National, Whiskey Creek, Links of Gettysburg, Clustered Spires, P.B. Dye, Worthington Manor, Challedon, and many more.

Landmarks
Visit the National Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American born canonized saint. A peaceful mountaintop pilgrimage to the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, the oldest replica of the Grotto of Lourdes in the western hemisphere is only 30 minutes away.

Specialty Shopping
We are close to the historic downtown shopping district where you will find retail entrepreneurs offering hand selected merchandise. One Hundred stores are located on Market, Patrick and East streets specializing in a diverse array of goods including: clothing, gifts, outdoor gear, toys, jewelry, chocolate, skateboards, furniture, fine home accessories, fresh cut flowers, hosiery, stationery, imports and more. Nationally-recognized stores are located in malls, shopping centers, and nearby outlets such as the Hagerstown and Leesburg Prime Outlets.

Culinary Delights
For those desiring a memorable dining experience Frederick County has all the right ingredients. Savor fresh local foods prepared by critically-acclaimed chefs like Bryan Voltaggio (Volts, Family Meal). Diners can expect Maryland and Chesapeake-style fare, dishes prepared with local ingredients, urban-chic restaurants with sophisticated entrees and ambiance and authentic international cooking from all corners of the globe. Downtown Frederick is a showcase of the culinary arts where 30 dining establishments stand ready to please your palate. Many are close to major attractions. Local restaurants also host daily happy hours and many beer or wine dinners, featuring local wine and craft beers. Live music and open mic nights also contribute to a lively nightlife.

Outdoor Activities
Northern Frederick County is home to Catoctin Mountain National Park, Cunningham Falls State Park and Gambrill State Park. Each offers exciting outdoor experiences and breathtaking scenery. You can enjoy wildlife, wildflowers, historic buildings, hiking trails, scenic drives, tent and cabin camping, boating, swimming, fly-fishing and cross country skiing.

Park experiences available in western Frederick County combine natural beauty with history. At Gathland State Park you’ll see the War Correspondents Memorial Arch and learn about the life of George Alfred Townsend a Civil War correspondent whose estate was once located on the site. The Appalachian Trail traverses Gathland as well as Washington Monument state Park, the first national tribute to the father of Our Country. The C&O Canal provides hiking and biking and also offers insight into transportation and trade in the 1800s. Nearby, the majestic Potomac River offers scenic beauty as well as thrilling whitewater rafting experiences.

Enjoy the agriculture experience at one of the many orchards, farms, vineyards or farmer’s markets. Pick your own fruits or vegetables or try a creamery treat from the farm. In fall, try one of several corn mazes, harvest festivals and uniquely charming events that Frederick County has to offer.

Wonderful weekend

We had a wonderful stay! Deb provided very thorough instructions and information about the area, was very responsive, and the house was just lovely. Easy check in and check out, with *no* list of cleaning or other check out requirements. The pool is fantastic, with a great covered patio for those not in the pool. Well supplied kitchen, and plenty of bath towels and toiletries. All in all, one of our favorite stays!

We had a truly wonderful vacation at the guest house! Even before our arrival, Deb was in touch and answered all of our questions promptly. When we arrived, we were welcomed just as promised—with a personalized sign, bagels and cream cheese, juice, and fresh fruit. The house was exactly as described—cozy, comfortable, and perfect for our stay. We did have a small issue with the AC, but Deb came over right away, even though it was late at night, and made sure a repairman arrived first thing the next morning so we wouldn’t be inconvenienced. Her attentiveness really made a difference. The pool area was amazing—very clean and relaxing. We loved the thoughtful touch of pool towels waiting on the lounge chairs, just like at a hotel. It was quiet and peaceful, and we spent most of our days enjoying it.The only downside was the number of outdoor cameras and the motion detectors inside, which made a sound whenever movement was detected. At night, this was a bit distracting. Overall, though, we had a wonderful and relaxing vacation—the only problem was that we couldn’t stay longer! We would definitely love to return next summer!

Great family Vacation in Beautiful Retreat

This is a fancy retreat, the host has decorated this house very elegantly and throughly. The breakfast goodies to start you off is a very nice touch. Deborah is a kind host and very reaponsive. For our family the one bathroom was challenging at times, but the overall space was more than adequate. The bedrooms were spacious and the kitchen was well equipped.

Perfect Writer's Retreat

We were in search of a last minute get-away for some intense writing and this was the perfect choice. Quiet, comfortable, welcoming - just what we needed. Be aware that the pool and hot tub are across the driveway behind the main house but do NOT let this put you off. Deb and family were discrete and we hardly knew they were there. I am looking forward to planning a return visit.

About the host

Host profile image
When I retired, I was a part-owner of an Engineering and IT firm. In 2005, I purchased this property because of its spacious, manicured five-acre estate and the unique 2,000-square-foot building shell at the back of the property. I designed this building with multiple purposes in mind: initially as a workspace for my engineering firm, featuring a large entryway, four office rooms, a full kitchen, and a full bathroom.

As my company grew, we eventually moved to a larger space. I transformed the building into a comfortable home for my mother. Later, when her health declined, I repurposed it for visiting family and friends. I also opened it up on VRBO and Airbnb to share its charm with travelers, and I’ve loved welcoming guests from around the world. I look forward to hosting you and making your stay memorable!

Why they chose this property

I chose this neighborhood because of its peaceful, scenic setting. It offers a perfect blend of tranquility and convenience, with beautiful natural surroundings. I loved how it felt like a retreat from the hustle and bustle, yet still close enough to local amenities and attractions.

Our scenery is characterized by lush greenery, mature trees, and well-maintained homes that give it a warm, welcoming vibe. It’s a place where I feel relaxed and inspired, and I love the sense of peace it brings. Whether it's watching wildlife or enjoying a sunset, this neighborhood has a special charm that makes it a wonderful place to live.

What makes this property unique

What sets my property apart is its special combination of thoughtful design, and the peaceful natural surroundings of a spacious five-acre estate. Our home serves multiple purposes — from a workspace to a cozy guest cottage — providing a flexible and comfortable space for visitors.

One of the most unique features is the opportunity to enhance your stay with an on-site massage in the charming Cottage at Elmer Derr. Instead of the hassle of finding a Maryland-licensed and certified massage therapist in Frederick, you can enjoy the convenience of having a professional come right to the cottage. Our licensed massage therapist has 16 years of experience and offers a range of services including myofascial, Swedish, deep tissue, lymphatic drainage, and aromatherapy tailored to your needs. Each session is designed to help you relax and unwind — all at $100 for 60 minutes.

Additionally, we have a year-round spa that’s heated to the perfect temperature, so you can enjoy a relaxing soak whenever you like, regardless of the weather.

The natural beauty of the surroundings, combined with these amenities and the opportunity for pampering, makes this property a truly special place to stay.
