Jungle and Beautiful Lake Arenal

In the grounds of Nepenthe B&B, This large home that belong to the owners of the B&B has 3 bedrooms, one on the main floor with a queen bed, another on the second floor with a king bed and bunk bed, and a third on the second floor with a queen bed and twin bed. The downstairs bathrooms has a shower and the one upstairs has a shower and tub.
The gourmet kitchen has granite counters, a breakfast bar and all stainless steel appliances. In the huge living area are a dining table seating 10, and a screen TV with satelital service.
Also, breakfast is complementary every days for the house guests at Nepenthe B&B restaurant called Phoenix.
Surrounding the house on three sides is a large veranda, perfect for viewing the tropical gardens, orange grove, and the infinity-edge pool. It is also a relaxing place to view the jungle, visiting monkeys, many types of birds as well as Lake Arenal and surrounding areas. Important to let our visitors know that the owner has a tiny aparment in the same house and he live there and he will be happy to give you a welcome words.

The house is rustic and floors creak walking upstairs. The people are very friendly and helpful. The Phoenix Restaurant on the property is very good. All in all, it’s a good place to stay.

Good property to stay at. A little complication at check-in but the staff made adjustments and go us into where we needed to be. Big house with lots of room. Great staging point for adventures in the area. Onsite restaurant staff were fantastic.

You have to see this place for yorself!

My family stayed here for our time in La Fortuna, this place is amazing! The views are incredible, people on staff are awesome and the wildlife is plentiful. It was an adventure gettin up to the house but made the experience even better! Other reviews say that this is not "luxary in the jungle", well it is not but one of the best in the area. That comment had to come from people who are expecting Palm Beach / Hollywood's version of a 5 star hotel. For local lodging this place is luxary in the jungle. If we are talking US luxary this place is a solid 3.9 stars but for Costa Rica it is 5. I can't say enough good things about this place, the Nepethane B&B and the Phoenix Restruant on site. Thank you for a stay that will be unforgettable.

Pool and view can't be beat

Beautiful location and ample space but in need of some TLC. The house is situated on a hill with a gorgeous view of the lake and volcano. Lovely pool and outside area which is perfect for reading, napping in the hammock, or having a drink while watching the sun set. The house is spacious but in need of some attention to detail. For example, need to put screens on the downstairs bedroom window, coffee maker needs to be replaced, TV and sound system didn't work (and weren't instructions). Hotel staff were charming and breakfast was delicious.

Staying in Paradise

We loved our stay at the VRBO behind the Nepenthe properties. It was so beautiful and we had plenty of space inside the home to hang out and enjoy our family. One of our favorite memories was eating breakfast each morning with the incredible upstairs view at the Phoenix. We will miss that the most, I think. We saw toucans fly past and had such a lovely view of the rainforest. Our first night at the property our 16 year old daughter stepped into part of the pool and hurt her leg. We didn't have bandaids or bandages to help her and the management came right away with antibiotic ointment, bandaids, and tape to close the wound. They were so attentive and kind. We would definitely stay there again.

Be Prepared!

This is a beautiful setting and is a B&B… very nice! But getting up a .5 mile road is treacherous and shouldn’t be attempted with a standard car/sedan. We bottomed-out multiple times. The place is poorly insulated and we had ants, cockroaches, and geckos inside. Harmless but not comfortable. The hosts were very accommodating to bringing extra towels and glasses. Don’t expect any extras in the kitchen. The meals at the B&B were great! We saw toucans out our kitchen window. Again, amazing view!!! But not for the faint of heart.

*I first wanted to mention that you should get an AWD to get around. *My family of 5 (includes 3 older teenagers) just rented this beautiful "rustic" home for 8 days. It was all the way at the top of a mountain, (hence the mention of a suitable vehicle). The view was absolutely breathtaking. No photos could do it justice - Arenal Volcano is majestic! The house is big and ample - nice kitchen - 3 big rooms and 3 full bathrooms, the infinity pool is a good size and very clean. There is no A/C but we were provided 2 additional portable fans, which my sons took. In my opinion, the weather was perfect this time of year with a constant refreshing breeze. Low 80's during the day and mid 50's at night. Only one of the living room fans worked and we couldn't find the remote for it. The kitchen lighting could have been brighter. The restaurant next door offered "complimentary" breakfast from 7 am to 9 am. It offered about 5 adequate sized and tasty options. The hosts were very available to answer any questions about the property and surrounding area. It's the perfect place to get away and reconnect with your family. They had several books and games to entertain if needed. The kitchen had plates, pots and pans, a big refrigerator- we cooked twice & the hosts provided a standard grill for us when asked. I would have liked to see more glassware such as wine glasses and some water glasses. Perhaps - offer to bring some and then collect them once the guests check out. Loved this house!

Views are amazing- everything else mediocre

Getting there was incredibly awkward. We had an experienced Costa Rican driver- but the directions provided were not clear and host was not very responsive when we contacted them. Finally we got there- the ride up the mountain is VERY steep. The house itself is very large, has most of what you need. Definitely needs TLC. Looks like most things have been allowed to get run down over the last sever years. There was a newly renovated bathroom on 1st floor that had a ‘window’ (just an open hole) with no screen or way to close it so the room was filled with bugs. There was a locked upstairs bedroom with a second floor balcony. Didn’t think much of it since some rental homes have restricted areas. This property is listed as ‘entire home’ so the assumption is that no one else is staying in the property. Well on the second night we came back from dinner to a random dog out on that second floor balcony. Also coincidentally there was no power at all in the house. I called the mgmt company Who assured me power would be restored shortly and let me know the dog Belonged to the owner who LIVES in that second floor bedroom. It was so odd. Like why not disclose that in the listing or even when we checked in (assuming it was a one off and maybe their plans had changed). It was a real violation of privacy. The view is spectacular. That was the saving grace. All in all would not stay again.

great place if you want the owner to share the house with you

My family and I arrived at the home around midnight on February 20th. We when we got there we could see that there were clothes on a clothes line. We thought it was odd but we were exhausted so we went to sleep. The next day we were gone all day until the evening. When we got back home I went out to the back yard and noticed that there was a dog toy. I hadn’t seen it when I was out on the back patio having coffee that morning so I thought that was also odd. On our last evening of the stay we arrived home around 10:00 p.m. and when my kids went upstairs to go to sleep they could hear the sound of a television. My son called me up and I also heard it coming from behind a door at the top of the stairs. I thought this door seemed kind of strange because it looked like a front door. I called out “Hello, is there someone in there?”. At first there was no response and so I called out a few more times and a male responded. I asked him who he was and why he was in the home when I was paying to rent the property. He said that he was the owner and that he could stay there because that was his own separate apartment. I told him he could not stay here while we were here and he said it would be fine. Meanwhile my son was able to contact his wife and she verified that it was her husband and that was their apartment and that it was fine if he stayed there. He left for a few hours and then returned that evening to the property The owner refused a refund

Great out of the way location for Arenal

This house is part of the Nepenthe B&B and is in a great location. you definitely need 4WD to get up the windy steep paths...but once you are there its great. wonderful location to explore the region. The phoenix restaurant connected to teh B&B is amazing! You are definitely in the rainforests....we saw monkeys and toucans. Some bugs in the house but not too bad. it was too rainy to use the pool. Loved the view

Fantastic

The description was accurate, and the view is well worth it. While we have no complaints, future guest should be prepared that this is a highly humid environment and things don't dry well. (bath towels, clothes, etc) that is not the properties fault. The bathrooms are a little on the dim side for lighting. The staff was absolutely amazing and was always able to assist with absolutely anything. From directions to activity reservations. The commute to La Fortuna is about 30 to 40 minutes if it's raining. Be patient, but the view is well worth it!!!

In Need of Investment

You stay at the property because of the view and vegetation/flowers. We learned that the local employees are kind and go out of their way to please. HOWEVER, when you walk into the facility, you instantly realize nothing has been invested in the building to keep it fresh and functioning as one would expect. The mattresses are beyond terrible. All the linens look like they have been in use since 2000. There is no microwave or AC. The fan in the family room does not function. The internet is slow and spotty. The furniture is worn and needs to be replaced. Be aware that to get to this property you will drive over rocky unpaved roads. Having a vehicle with clearance would be helpful. We had a day without water. Think washing dishes, bathing and flushing toilets. We would not return to this property as is. Nevertheless, the local staff are truly wonderful! This could be a 5-star property if the owners took care of it and invested some of their earnings back into it.

This property could be amazing! The story of how the owners found the land and built the "Nepenthe" B & B is a beautiful one. Anyone who loves Costa Rica can relate to the allure of living there long-term and be inspired by their story. This property is situated on the hillside overlooking Lake Arenal and Arenal volcano, and the "Oropendola" estate is located at the highest point on the property. Every evening we gathered on the outside patio to look at the stars, and every morning to listen to the birds and the watch the day come to life. Situated below is the most darling little restaurant, operated by a wonderful team. They cooked our fresh fish for us one night! Breakfasts were great and the view exquisite. Where this property lacks is in the things that people have now come to expect with VRBO listings. *The bath towels were from 1980s like my grandmother used to have-different colors, thin/threadbare and crunchy. *The beds are atrocious! Old, squeaky, spring mattresses, headboards loose, very difficult to get a good nights sleep. All beds need updating yesterday. *Bed linens-old quilts, old sheets, flat pillows. *Kitchen-very limited functionality; old dented pans for cooking, no glass wine glasses, pint glasses, all plastic. Additionally, the kitchen had no microwave, and several cabinet doors were falling off. We didn't cook much because the restaurant was so great, but the one night we did stay in it was a chore. I wish I could've given this place a 5 star review because we had a nice time. However, I am giving it 3 starts....this property is in need of a few important things that should not be overlooked any further for future guests.

A little slice of heaven

This was our 2nd stay here and we couldn’t recommend this location more! We loved and enjoyed the views, the game room, the pool, the walk to The Phoenix, and we even got to meet the owners this time around. We will be back again. Our kids already miss it! We love you Nepenthe- you have our hearts forever.

Great View

Great place to stay and the view is priceless. Great view of the volcano and the lake. We thought it would be close to Monte Verde. It looks close on a map, but it's not. It's in Arenal. If you're your going ziplining make sure you go to Sky Adventure in Arenal. Only 10 minutes away. I've been on several ziplines before but this one took my breath away. We had booked a zipline in the wrong place (Monte Verde) which we had to cancel and book one in Arenal. The company was very helpful and understanding and gave us a refund.

Great Stay While it Lasted

My family and I had an overall great time during our brief stay. Due to the travel restrictions we had to shorten our stay but we ultimately made the best of the days we were there. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at this property. The views are amazing and after addressing some cleanness issues with Joel, we were on our way to thoroughly enjoying our stay. The location was the right quiet ambiance we were looking for. We‘ve stayed in the nice resorts in La Fortuna previously but it was a great idea to rent a house this time since we were taking the kids with us. The complimentary breakfast was great and the staff’s attention was even better after addressing a few things. The house is spacious and yes it has an interesting lay out with some lighting that needs improvement but the views and vegetation more than make up for it. My wife liked the property and we may book it again for a longer stay in the future making sure that certain minimal expectations are addressed. It just seemed that the house hadn’t been rented in a while prior to our arrival and we would have appreciated for the staff making sure that a thorough cleaning including making the pool swimmable was completed. Again, we were able to address these points and for the most part they were corrected. Great place for a family gateway.

Get away in rainforest

The property was well maintained, we had a supper at the Phoenix on site; staff were fantastic. The breakfasts were prepared each day and were very good as well. We spent 4 nights there, 15 min to la Fortuna, so we were in a perfect area to see the sloths, hanging bridges, volcano hikes etc. We had never been in that area of Costa Rica, but would definitely recommend going. La Fortuna was big enough to get all our supplies for the time we were there. The weather was what we expected, off and on rain showers, so dress accordingly. We left there for Playa Hermosa and some needed sunshine. The road up the hill is rough but we had a large van and even with the rainfall we had no problems.

The property is dated but the staff, wildlife and beautiful grounds more than make up for it!

Cons; beds not the most comfortable, keep everything closed or in fridge or ants will get it, cobwebs etc behind headboards, bathroom downstairs was stinky, lighting in upstairs shower and bathroom not the greatest and some of the doors were swollen and hard to shut. Pros; Plenty of beds to choose from, lots of room inside and outside to hang out and enjoy the view, excellent breakfast, lovely cold Pool, Large kitchen with lots of utensils and all other kinds of kitchen gadgets, large windows and lots of room to see the view from inside, beautiful and well-maintained landscaping outside, and loads of wildlife. The restaurant served fresh and delicious food for dinner and the service was wonderful. The staff were very helpful. This is our second visit and we enjoyed each and every time we stayed here.

Amazing Tucked Away Beauty

Seamless coordination from beginning to end. It’s quite a journey to the final destination but that’s what makes it even more desirable - from the beauty of the house, the property and its surroundings to the white glove service and comfort of the staff, the entire experience was outstanding.
