About this property

Stylish, 1830s Stone Barn on13 acres, 20 mins Sarlat. Relaxing and private

Imagine the gently sloping rim of a shallow tea cup saucer. This 1830s renovated stone barn, an 8 minute walk to the Dordogne River, sits on the edge of that rim, oriented south/southwest, a large entry courtyard, overlooking a hidden garden, with views over its own little valley. Along the south side of the entire length of the building (72 feet), French doors and large windows flood the rooms with light throughout the day. The intimate valley, over 13 rolling acres, looks across to an abandoned farm, where sheep still graze daily. Silence, sunlight, and incredible starry nights are pretty much your only neighbors. Not a typical renovation (which often chops up the rhythm of a space to maximize the number of bedrooms), this property was designed with great care and planning to preserve its architectural authenticity, integrity and flow. The high ceiling (25+ ft) timber framed spaces naturally dictate how the room arrangements flow. Especially gorgeous during the off seasons. Heaven!

I asked this renter for some feedback as to why he found some things wanting at the house. If he had told me there were issues when he was there, it would have been efficient for me to deal with them at the time. To leave a message just complaining without any feedback, does not help the cause. Just to clarify, he did not like that the mattresses were not thicker (They are standard thickness and were expensive when I purchased them). He said there were leaves on the terrace. I explained with winds and very dry conditions, the walnut tree there must be very stressed and therefore shedding more than normal. He also said the bath tub faucet did not work well, but I will have the plumber in to look at it when the present renters leave.... I can't know these things if I am not made aware of them! No complaints at all from the present, or any other renters this summer. In general, I have very very very few complaints from renters since I have been renting the house since 2008.. I think this is the second time someone has said something the least bit negative.

Peaceful country stay

We had a very nice, relaxing stay at The Barn. The property is very spacious with a nice outdoor space for enjoying the peace and quiet and views of the surrounding nature. The kitchen contains everything one needs, including large gas stove and oven for cooking and there is an outdoor charcoal grill. There are some minor quirks to the build given the age of the building, but that comes with the old country house charm. There were some problems with wifi during our stay but the owner was quick to respond and sort out with the Telco provider. Since we were traveling around the area during the day and had mobile data packages it didn't detract from enjoying our stay. Overall we loved the Dordogne region and really enjoyed our stay at The Barn.... we would definitely stay again!

I am still very sorry about the Wi Fi which was ENTIRELY the fault of Orange, the French provider. When I got the box in May, a pre-payment from my French account was set up… or…. so it seemed. Even though it was all confirmed, clearly it did not take! I finally got through to them, both by post and on their English speaking line, which probably took at least 7 tries, I kid you not! As for the other small issues, sadly I can not be there to guard against careless mistakes other renters prior to you made which had a small impact on your stay. I am in constant touch with my staff to get right on the problems and often will even ask the present renter if the handyman can get in there and deal with it, without disturbing their stay. Thank you for coming and I am glad you could enjoy yourselves!

I state here, then on all the the websites where the house is listed, that I can not get high speed WIFI.. I have been told each time, many times in the past by FranceTelecom that I am "not in the zone" It is not just me, but our whole small valley.. no one is able to stream, period. I tell all renters to use their cell phones or tablets with a French sim card, easily available in Sarlat or Brive. As far as the tv signal, I told the renter that, probably owing to storms the satellite dishes were out of alignment. I tried immediately to get the man there to fix it, but he did not respond in a timely manner to satisfy this renter's tv needs. I did not know the CD player was broken. This is the first I have heard of that. It will be replaced when I go there next. Each visit, I spend many hours addressing all needs of the house and correcting them for the next season. Labor of love to satisfy needs

This is an utterly charming property!

Our stay rates 5 stars! House is charming and charmingly idiosyncratic, beautifully furnished (but not over-furnished), clean to a T, and more than well appointed – modern, functioning stove, fridge, showers, etc. Beds comfortable, linens clean and crisp. We even had a lovely bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table to greet us! All in all, it was better than the listing description. And Souillac is only 10 minutes away.If you have the opportunity to spend a week or so there, take it: just to sit on the terrace under the walnut tree looking out over the fields as you sip a pastis in the late afternoon is worth what you'll spend... We'd go back tomorrow if we could!

Originell ausgebaute Scheuer in traumhafter Umgebung

This is the first mediocre review of the property I have ever received. Please feel free to check other reviews, both on this site and other rental sites, as well as the Barn's own website. I pride myself on providing much behind the scenes information as I can to help a client make the most of their vacation. Given I know this area since the late 1970s, I have many ideas I can offer my clients. This all takes time but I enjoy and am happy to do it. This, and the fact that I employ 3 people to make their stay enjoyable all contribute to a value added experience. I remain in constant contact with my staff and I am always available for clients before, during and after their visits. The house is meticulously maintained and any issues that arise during a season are dealt with once the season ends.

Peaceful and lovely renovation

Upon arrival we found the property to be spotlessly clean, comfortable and very attractive. The barn was the perfect place to explore the region - castles, gardens, markets, caves, 13th century mill built by monks...and at the end of each day a glass of wine as we discussed our outings. One week was not enough; next time we plan to spend more time "at home", walking, lounging and enjoying the serene beauty of this amazing place.

A magical place to stay, beautifully designed.

Staying in this beautiful Barn was a dream come true, I have always loved the concept of a barn conversion and to experience this well designed artistically executed property was a delight. The place was immaculate and super clean on arrival, every detail had been catered for. We stayed for a week in January and enjoyed cosy evenings around a roaring log fire. The owner is so helpful down to the last degree when organising the holiday and her staff could not have been more pleasant. This area of the Dordoigne is a firm favourite with my family, we have been visiting for the past twenty five years. Staying in the Barn just exceeded all our expectations and gave us a new level of enjoyment. Thank you.

Perfection from every aspect

There is always a special pleasure for those who travel frequently, when we find that everything we hoped we would find is as described yet well beyond our expectations. The Barn is one such place! Immaculate spacious facilities with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. Despite the excellent photographs and descriptions of the barn what can't be described is the deep satisfaction the ambience and design of this place provides your soul. So rare in this age to step back into that warm feeling of waking up in the morning as a child on a summer day new fresh and happy. Spectacular in the most simple fashion.

I am a very active Francophile, designer, photographer and a teacher. I try to spend as much time as possible in France, in my beloved stone barn. I renovated the barn from scratch. Dirt floors, stone walls! It was a great learning experience It firmly 'cemented' the area in my heart. I love the barn. It is my spiritual home. It is filled with light and is very calming. Nothing makes me happier than to spend time there. Everyone who enters comments on the calming quality of the place; this without any prompting from me. You can walk to the Dordogne or bike along its shores directly from the house. Two towns are within minutes to supply you with everything you need, including two weekly markets. The area close to the barn abounds in things to explore and discover. Sunsets! Come and see!

Why they chose this property

I had visited the region regularly since 1983 and was completely taken with it. The pure simplicity and natural beauty spoke to me. I have friends in the region who have been there for over 40 years, so I was immediately immersed in vrai France, one filled with the everyday lifestyle of the French. This had a big influence on me and continues to this day. I love the area because I love being outdoors. I spend most of my free time hiking with friends and punctuating the hikes with either great picnics or terrific well deserved lunches out. There is so much to see! The biking is also stellar and not too difficult. The area appears remote and has many remote qualities but has every amenity one could hope for. The markets continue to thrill me, and I never miss a visit to one.

What makes this property unique

Serenity and Respite! Hiking, biking, canoeing, markets, gardens, history, vide greniers, cooking, outings with friends, Met HD opera 20 minutes away in Sarlat! All modern conveniences within 10 minutes of the house, yet the house is a world away. The house is designed in a very open plan so that there is lots of light and privacy yet open space through out. There are fabulous gardens and incredible towns and villages to visit, all easily accessed from the house. And when one returns in the early evening, nothing satisfies like a glass of cold rose, while sitting on the terrace enjoying the private view of the hidden valley.
