About the host
Hosted by Renate Huckle
After many years of being a GP in South Devon, where we enjoyed boat building, sailing, renovating houses and where our 4 children were born, we decided to move to the countryside to live a different life and try farming. After much searching we found the perfect place, unspoilt and secluded Bradford Barton in the middle of Devon, on the Two Moors Way between Exmoor and Dartmoor with a large enough farm house for all of us and many substantial, interesting barns in quite good condition. So we moved and have never regretted it. We love having visitors and showing them around.
Why they chose this property
The farm consists of 150 acres of lovely meadows surrounded by high hedges, ideal for any wildlife. After a lot of work on the farm house and the cottage we are very lucky to live here and now manage 3 productive apple orchards which supply our 250 year old cider press for apple juice and cider making in October/November each year. We have 3 old decidious woodlands as well as a beautiful 10 acre arboretum with 330 specimen trees, some on the red list and a recently planted 10 acre grove of 350 Giant Redwoods (Sequoia dendrum Gigantium). The best tree for carbon capture over the whole of its 3000 year lifespan.
What makes this property unique
The cottage is large, solid, light and very private with wonderful views over the pond, vegetable garden and surronding fields.
At night, you can hear the owls and see the stars.
As the farm is old with a lot of traditional buildings visitors often feel tranported to a gone by time. Our visitors are welcome to explore and walk the Arboretum and Sequoia plantation and of course the whole farm with the orchards and fields.
