Mevagissey is one of the few remaining active Cornish fishing harbours. In the small town you can enjoy local shops, boutiques, and art galleries. There are cafes, pubs and restaurants, as well as places to stop for a cream tea, fish and chips or an ice-cream. There is also a handmade fudge shop.
A visit to the museum and aquarium on the harbour is recommended as is a trip on board the Seascan. Freshly caught fish are often available to buy from the quayside. There are many walks that can be enjoyed from the cottage, but most popular are those along the coastal path leading from the harbour.
Mevagissey is fortunate to have a cycle path that meanders to St. Austell and beyond. There is a ferry to take you to Fowey and a great variety of activities to suit all interests. Fishing trips and scenic boat trips are available from the harbour. If you enjoy watersports or a day out at the seaside, sandy beaches are close by. For garden enthusiasts many popular attractions are within easy reach, including; The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Caerhays Castle and The Eden Project. There are several National Trust properties. Walking and nature enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with the South West Coast path running practically past the door and many other short walks to explore that reveal an abundance of plant life and wildlife. Trips out to sea are readily available where visitors frequently encounter playful dolphins who love to swim close to the boughs of boats as they traverse the bay.
If you are interested in popular culture you will enjoy a visit to the nearby 18th century harbour village of Charlestown. One of Britain's most popular film locations, it was used in The Eagle Has Landed, The Pirates of The Caribbean, The Onedine Line - to name just a few and most recently the new Poldark series. Mevagissey’s very own tour boat Seascan, moored in Mevagissey harbour also features in the popular German television adaptation of Rosamund Pilcher’s novels’. My husband and I with our greyhound Sophie stayed at Chorister's Cottage for 10 days and had a thoroughly enjoyable time! The weather was hot and gloriously sunny which meant regular walks to the harbour in Mevagissey were a treat! Jacqui could not organise the weather, but everything else to do with the cottage was fantastic too: clean, comfortable and airy with all the conveniences of home (washing machine and dishwasher greatly appreciated and used!) and a welcoming tea tray on arrival. It was just as described on the site, but also had such a nice feel to it, due to the care and attention the owner has invested in it. We felt like we were living as locals for the time! Recommend the fish stall on the harbour, museum, aquarium, various pubs (the Ship, the Fountain, the Kings Arms which had live music Sunday afternoon and the Sharksfin which were all dog friendly.
Also Lobbs farm shop at the Lost Garden of Heligan for farm produce and beautiful wood turning with items for sale. The Lost Gardens were spectacular too and plants for sale were purchased and brought back home for our own lost garden! A bootsale at Par market was also fun, if you like that sort of thing, and a visit to Charlestown kept us busy all day as the museum is dog friendly as well as the attached Bosun's restaurant.
We would definitely recommend a stay at Chorister's Cottage and would love to visit again in the future!

Dear Denise, Erik and Sophie, It is so good to hear of what guests have enjoyed about their stay at Chorister's Cottage. Getting such positive feedback makes all the preparations worthwhile. Knowing that my visitors have found the whole community welcoming is a bonus as of course I cannot do anything to influence that but am happy to see that my own experience of Mevagissey is reflected in that of my guests.
Even though I grew up in the area and visit frequently, like you I still discover new things to interest and delight me. It is no surprise then that a frequent comment is that there was not enough time in one visit to experience all that the area has to offer. Of course as the seasons change so do the attractions and visiting out of season is a great option for those not tied to school holiday times. Out of season rates are not only cheaper but the pace is calmer and so in terms of relaxation you get even more for your money. I look forward to welcoming you back to Chorister's again soon Jacqui

Hill & cooksey holiday 20-08-2022
Garden needed some attention before any persons used it, family got bit several times. Didn't use it again. Out side toilet area needed a clean with neighbours weeds growing through the fence.
Needs a light on the landing due to poor or no light at all when going to the toilet at night. My wife fell over the concrete upstand adjacent to the parking area. She was very shaken
Location quiet, but you would expect that being next to a graveyard.
Smell of soot in main living room
No wardrobe space in second bedroom, only in main bedroom & children's room
Clean cottage within walking distance of harbour, shops and restaurants. Lovely patio area for alfresco dining. Found a hidden beach within easy walking distance of the cottage. Very comfortable.
A well equipped cottage, centrally located and lovely. (Just needs some airers and places for wet towels - picky but honest).
We loved every minute and Jacqui was so helpful. We would definitely go back.

Thanks for the great feedback and good to know about the need for airers for the towels during the autumn.
Our second stay at Choristers, the cottage just as lovely as we remembered. Superbly equipped with every implement you can think of. Very comfy and cosy with a lovely garden where we had a couple of meals from the (excellent) Chinese and Indian takeaways in the village only a 5 min walk away.
Highly recommended
What a lovely cottage, great location only 5 mins walk from the harbour. Lovely garden to sit out and have a meal or drink.
Very well equipped with everything you could ever need even down to a roll of sellotape which came in handy.
Such a cosy place to stay with very comfy beds.
The outside loo a great bonus when having a meal/drinks in the garden.
The best property we have stayed in so far in Cornwall, so glad we have already booked for September!
We had a very relaxing break in this wonderful cottage. Everything was clean and well maintained, nice sunny garden overlooking the village, which is a short walk away, we would love to return, thank you.
Jacqui’s cottage is peaceful, comfortable, very well equipped and only a few minutes walk from Mevaggisey harbour. It has a lovely little garden in front of the property. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend the cottage.
We had a wonderful stay in Choristers Cottage. It’s ideally located in a quiet spot only short stroll in to Mevagissey.
The beds were extremely comfortable with nice heavy duvets and crisp cotton bedding.
The wood burner was a lovely addition at this time of year. We lit it when we returned rather damp from the beach on a couple of occasions.
So much to see and do in this gorgeous part of Cornwall. A week really wasn’t long enough.
After a crazy summer we were all really pleased to finally get a break away for the week, and Mevagissey didn’t disappoint. The property was the perfect base for exploring the Cornish coast line, and had everything you would need for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Excellent week had by all!
We looked forward to a long awaited get away after working all through the Covid lockdown and Choristers Cottage did not disappoint. There was everything we could need, it was so well equipped. The cottage felt like an oasis of calm and it was the perfect getaway to relax and unwind. Our daily walk down to the harbour was delightful, the village had such a great vibe and we were lucky with near perfect weather. Without a doubt we will be back!

About the host
Hosted by Jacqueline Wedlake Hatton
I was born about 10 miles from Mevagissey and have fond childhood memories of visiting my friend's Grandmother there, skipping through the streets, eating ice-cream whilst sitting on the rocks near the harbour; pretty much doing the sorts of things that our visitors to Mevagissey still love to do today. As an adult I studied art at Falmouth and remain inspired by the familiar landscapes of the south west. These days I eat less ice cream and walk through the hilly streets and coast paths which is a great way to stay fit and enjoy some amazing scenery. I love how Cornwall, with her tides and unpredictable weather reveals herself serendipitously to those who take the time to explore. For example, during a recent walk I stumbled upon the wreck of the 'Romanie', believed to be the inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier's 'Rebecca'. I hope that if you come to stay at Chorister's Cottage you and your party will take away with you equally fond and inspiring memories.
Why they chose this property
Having grown up in the St.Austell area, I later moved to Truro and from there began living part time in London. It made sense for me during this time to downsize from my home in Truro to a cottage in my best loved corner of Cornwall. I am delighted to now have my own home here once again. Mevagissey, in my opinion, is one of the few Cornish fishing towns to still retain its integrity as such, it seems little changed since my childhood. I still live partially in London, but knowing that I will always spend some of the year in my home county, my criteria for a second home was to be close to my family and within walking distance of the sea and a pub or restaurant. It is a bonus to be in this part of Cornwall - an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. Also I wanted easy access to the South West Coast Path. Parking was important as having the convenience of my own car to explore Cornwall and visit friends and family when here is essential. Finally I wanted a comfortable and cosy home with a real fire and a traditional feel; Chorister's Cottage ticks all of those boxes. I look forward to sharing this beautiful part of Cornwall with you. Whenever I return to my cottage it feels like coming home and I aspire to create an ambiance that is comfortable and homely in the hope that my guests will also feel at home whilst there.
What makes this property unique
In addition to the accommodation inside the cottage there is a delightful garden area at the front which gets the sun for most of the day. Being tucked away behind the old Church of St.Peter, this is a quiet and peaceful setting. The tranquillity of this hidden corner of Mevagissey contrasts with the activity and bustle of the beautiful harbour, yet it is less than a five minute, relatively level walk away. I am a romantic at heart and so the subtle details like the cries of the seagulls and, the birdsong of numerous other wild bird species during my stays here is a joy. In addition, at night time there is usually an owl hooting, bats flitting about the street lamps and when the sky is clear the stars never fail to delight me.
